Mindless Thursday

Yay for the right sprinkles! We are quite lucky here that in our Farmer's Market, there is a stand that has all sorts of colors of sprinkles and sanding sugar. They also have all sorts of different sprinkle shapes. So, yeah, if you are looking for a sprinkle color or shape that you cannot find, I might just be able to find it for you.

My friend is coming over, but I probably won't actually see her, because I have to leave in 20 minutes, and they will get here in about 40. They'll probably also leave before I get back at 5 Sad

I was looking at a few woodworking sites yesterday. I thought making wood boxes (jewelry, display) would be fun, not to expensive, maybe make nice gifts. I have a couple first attempts that turned out well and a display box that is almost done and looking really good. I found a site where the guy has a 20 by 20 workshop with more power equipment than I thought possible. He makes some really nice boxes out of exotic woods. Some of the woods come with a $100/ square ft upcharge. Nice boxes. The thought of a miscut, at those prices. I'll stick with Oak, mahogany, pine for a while. Maybe try some of my birch and locust. Hickory proved to be no fun.

Doug - my Pa is a woodcarver, altho at 88 his days of standing at the radial arm saw are over (power stuff and oxygen tanks don't go well together).

But even today, My Dad's idea of the BEST present ever is to have me get him a couple of roughouts from Moore's -- and with him in Jamestown NY and me in Flooooor-daa our idea of Father/Daughter togetherness is me dialing him up on GoToMyPC and we surf together to various carving sites to pick out woods and stuff.  When I was just knee-hi to a pine knot it was my family *job* to go down to the cellar and work wtih Pa.  Good memories.

And Hickory is never any fun (protecting my behind when I said that)

Doug, DH took up woodcarving about 7 years ago.  His first year, he did several small pieces that were beautiful. Then he decided to jump right into an expert level project -- carving a carousel horse (about 2 feet by 2 feet).  As usual with a new hobby, he went full-steam ahead for a while, then lost interest.  So, this poor horse has been 3/4 finished for the past 2-3 years because he only works on it a couple times a month.  Don't get me started on the zillions of dollars of specialty carving tools he HAD to buy to do it.

Lisa -- post a pic of the finished cake here for those of us not on Facebook.  I bet it'll look great!  I only had plain rectangular pan cakes as a kid.  Some I've seen at kids' parties are almost too pretty to eat, they're like works of art!

Jen, I'd be worried while your friend has Luke, too.  It's hard to turn over our beloved pups to someone else's care, even if we trust the person 110%.

It's tough to start huge cleaning/purge projects, but once underway, I find them invigorating.  I've moved across country 3 times, and each time I did a massive purge before packing boxes.  I just said to DH the other day that we need to move since it's been 10 years since I've been forced to get rid of a bunch of stuff.  I find myself saying things like, "How did we get three spatulas all the same size?!"

Cathy -- I think we need to ask Deb for a special cocktail in your honor -- something to celebrate your DH going back to work after three weeks at home, underfoot.  Actually, maybe the drink would've been in order at the start of his vacation, to help you get through it.  :-)

Good luck with the colonoscopy tomorrow, Ginger --- it is funny that your appointment coincides with all the poop talk this week!

Hoping Glenda's okay.  Maybe she's having computer or internet issues.

I drank plenty while he was off ;). I also ate too much junk, so I need to purge my system for 2 days. I can also finally catch up on some of my shows on the DVR. Speaking of shows - I was watching a documentary the other night about the dust bowl in the 1930s and it was really fascinating. It was the 1st of a 2 part documentary though and I can't find a listing for the 2nd part :(.

There's a big Pet Expo on Saturday and I really want to go but I'm torn about whether to take Shane or not. I think he'd enjoy it but I worry about the other dogs and clueless owners that might be there.

ETA - Yay, I found the 2nd part. It had a different title - "Reaping the Whirlwind" and it's on next Wed. :)

I saw an ad for that dust bowl documentary, Cathy.  It's a Ken Burns production, right?  It looked like it would be very moving to see what those people endured.

Speaking of eating junk, Baskin Robbins is having a special $1 scoop promotion today.  I think I will detour into that driveway when I leave work this afternoon.  It's important to support the local, independently owned businesses, you know!  Stick out tongue

Yes - it's a PBS show and you can probably find when it's showing in your area. It really was fascinating to watch the footage and listen to the personal accounts. From what I can tell, the 2nd part is about the mass influx of people moving to California, so that should be very interesting.

Tracy - you are super thoughtful to support your local Baskin Robbins :). I wish I'd read your post before I got home but I did say I needed to purge, so it's probably for the best. I've had a real craving for pistachio ice cream lately though or even better, some spumoni - yum!!

Gah now I am craving ice cream!

Not to make your craving worse, Julie, but I had a scoop of Snickers ice cream on a sugar cone, and it was tasty.  I'll have to walk extra fast to burn it off when my friend and I take our walk tonight!
