Yikes -- what a scare with the meds mix-up, Lisa. Thank God you noticed it before giving it to Riley, and I'm glad it sounds like the pharmacist is equally upset.
Ruby's got some pent up energy today, too. It's been overcast and a bit drizzly, so she's not interested in being outside (she prefers hot sun). She'll have plenty to distract her in a couple hours when our friends arrive with their twin 6-year old daughters. They're in town this weekend from Florida, and we met them last night at a restaurant (first time together in 7 years). The girls kept asking about Ruby and are very excited about meeting her today. We've not had kids in the house yet, so we're hoping all goes well. They have two dogs at home, so they're comfortable with dogs, which should help. We've got treats, Kongs, and the crate ready!
I never thought about designating a word for emergency recalls. Knowing how I am in an emergency, it likely would be useless for me since everything would leave my head (actually, my instant reaction would probably be to scream something like Jen said!). Ruby has decent recall (we use "come";) for things like calling her to the backdoor or across the yard, but if she got away from us somehow and was really focused elsewhere, I doubt that would work reliably. That's why we don't let her off-leash anywhere but in our fenced yard and the organized fenced playgroup we go to. We'll have to think about finding a special word or phrase.
Doug, I remember when we realized our Bullmastiff couldn't jump on the bed anymore. We took our mattress off the frame, where it still sits today. I actually prefer it lower myself -- being only 5 feet tall, it's easier for me, too!
