I will absolutely second Anne's advice. When the pup formerly known as Sadie went missing she was picked up by AC on Monday. Lori WENT to the shelters and called several times per day. Being 4+ hours away, having spent a DAY walking in the rain looking for her and feeling really USELESS, I emailed her picture to absolutely EVERY rescue I could find, every shelter, every ACO, etc. Thursday I got an email from a gal with a rescue who flat out insisted that Sadie was AT the Shelter in the Monday row. I CALLED. I spoke with the guy who physically works IN the Monday row. Nope, she wasn't there. But, still, on the strength of this gals conviction that in fact Sadie WAS there, I sent Lori to check on it. Sure enough, there she was, BUT hidden in plain site so to speak since she was in the TOP row of cages. Now what rocket scientists puts a 60 lb shepherd in a TOP crate......and honestly I suspect there was something hinky going on there and the gal from the rescue *might* have had access to just a few more places than the general public does.....but, CALLING did absolutely NO good. And, I'd had this girl for months. I could describe her in absolute DETAIL and the guy still didn't see her?
GO to the shelters, eyeball every single dog there, and if there are rows of cages, be sure that you CHECK the ones where your baby *shouldn't* be.
