Need some good thoughts for Jessie

As many of you know, Jessie has chronic pancreatitis. She found a piece of raw bacon on her walk this morning; it was in someone's yard near the curb. She got it before I realized what it was. She tried to get another piece but I stopped her. I called the vet and asked how long it would be before she would have any symptoms, and she said probably one to two days. Hopefully she'll be okay, but I can't remember her having that much fat at one time even before she had pancreatitis. She got into a rabbits nest a few months ago and ate 2 or 3 of the youngsters; they were about the size of guinea pigs. She was fine, so maybe this won't cause any problems. I would appreciate some good thoughts for her; pancreatitis attacks can be pretty scary; thanks.

well said -- but I think we need the Candles Page **anyway**.

Candles -- and not just the pancreas, but there had to be bacteria and all sorts of yuck in something like that.  Jessie -- don't worry Mom like that!!

In my experience dogs tend to process raw fats *much* better than cooked fats. Something about how the properties of fats change when they are cooked. So, keeping fingers crossed that there will be no problems!

(And my crazy schnauzer-quad says "We have to be very careful with cooked and kibbled foods, as our breed is very at-risk for pancreatitis. But we can eat anything raw and don't even blink!";).

Thank you all so much! You're truly wonderful!

Callie; the bacon had probably been there all night, and the bacteria does worry me. Monica recommends cooked diets for dogs with compromised immune systems.

Kim; my vet was hoping it was cooked bacon because some of the fat would be cooked out of it.

She's acting fine so far. I'll probably stay up tonight and watch her. If she does need to see a vet tonight, Purdue Small Animal Hospital handles emergencies for this area, so she would be in very good hands. I'll update this in the morning.
