Seriously injured dog needing good thoughts (outdoorschik)

One Ton you ROCK buddy!  Getting up again is exhausting but it's a GOOD thing.

Talk to the vet about the water therapy while this wound is open -- would it be wise to put some Betadyne in the water???

    This is a great update!!

Good to hear One Ton is still improving! Great work Karen.

    ^^^ What Linda said.

Continued thoughts for you both, Karen & One Ton.

He didn't eat last night or this morning. So I did feed him with a syringe this morning. I'm just not sure about this wound, it's very weird. I don't understand dog anatomy and how it works together skin, veins, arteries well but it is just bleeding so much... seems like more than an abcess or skin cut? I've had a dog before that abcessed under the chin due to a piece of hay and have seen the consistency of the blood and pus that came out of that... I've never seen the amount of blood that is related to a severe bite/internal tearing of tissue before though. I would assume that if there was some severe artery or neck vein damage two weeks ago he'd already be dead (not to be morbid), but it's almost like when we squeeze it there is too much true blood (vs. fluid and blood). It was really coming out this morning and I don't know if it's because we bothered something in there vein wise that was trying to heal or if it's really just blood filling the empty space that needs to leak. I went through several gauze pads before I left and then placed some more on it and wrapped it. If it still seems scary after work I'll call the vet again... god they must be sick of me, but it's freaking me out a bit. So yes... I'm a panicker and I'm sure he sensed that which is why he refused to eat.

Ok so I'm a ball of anxiety today.

Karen, considering the seriousness of the injuries One Ton sustained, you have every right to panic.  He is very lucky to have you.

Calming vibes and ((((Hugs)))).  You are doing a fantastic job and One Ton knows that, as do we and his vet.

Calming vibes for you and healing vibes for One Ton!  Keep up the good work both of you!

Hmm I am a bit behind but is this the original wound?

When Ellie had her open wound we were managing...I did the water therapy once a day and wrapped it. There was never any blood and her tummy was basically open enough that a fist fit in there...so this is kind different sounds like. I agree it must be some sort of venous involvement, OR possibly something like a clotting issue? Have they given him anything to help it clot? Is he a bleeder?

I know they say new blood is a bright, clear red color...so if that's what you are seeing it would seem there's an active bleeder someplace there? *scritches head* I hope you can get it figured out...and are they monitoring him for anemia? losing small amts of blood daily can really cause that pretty quickly and lead to a lot of other symptoms.

To answer your question Gina/catch you up - Yep... but not the leg. I'm talking about the issue that's been going on around his neck top and bottom. There was severe biting, bruising, shaking/tearing of the tissue in there. Was massively swollen and filled with fluid and air all around. That's gone down ten fold. The neck (near jugular area and higher on the right) began to drain pinkish and pus fluid late last week and we got it all out. Then, it swelled up again and the abcess holes had filled up. Yesterday it was the size of a tennis ball and solid/squishy feeling. They lanced it last night and two cups of bloody fluid came out. They watched him and did not think they'd hit a vein/artery while lancing it and sent us home. It began to bleed deep red blood that we assumed was coming out of the skin cut that had been made. It drained/bled all night and filled a very small gauze pad but didn't leach all the way through. This morning I had BF squeeze it as we were instructed, I didn't watch how he did it since I'm a bit queasy.

He went through several gauze pads this morning and after the squeezing, it continued to bleed deep red as if something had been disturbed?... I put a fairly tight dressing on it with new gauze and went to work. Yes, it seems to me that there is something actively bleeding in there and it's freaking me out totally :( I didn't know whether to drop him off on my way.

Ah I see, thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of the neck wounds more than the leg...so glad I wasn't completely off :)

The neck has so much "stuff" in it that yes I'd too be concerned. But really it could only be that a vein or such was nicked or that he has some sort of clotting issue going on...is thinning of the blood or slowness to clot perhaps a side effect of any of the meds he is on? I'd definitely check on that or call the vet and ask them to consider that possibility.

As I said I am hoping you can get this figured out, anemia is no fun and that would be a concern eventually here I should think!

Yep, I'm going to... I'm assuming that it is a vein not an artery because there would be more, but it's still a lot :(. I will call them and ask about clotting, etc. He's on: Baytril, Amoxicillin, Metaclopramide, Tramadol, & Milk Thistle...

I hope the bleeding is nothing serious but since you're worried about it, I'd definitely call the vet and ask questions. You've worked so hard since this happened that I'm sure your nerves are frazzled and mine would be too. (((Hugs)))

    • Gold Top Dog

I talked to them after apologizing profusely for calling everyday and offering to pay by the phone call :)... vet said that he doesn't think it's the artery but may be other things so.... I'm to check his gums after school. If they are pale & tacky he goes in again today. If they are pink I'm to leave the bandage in place all night and then check tomorrow morning. If it's still bleeding tomorrow AM, I need to bring him in. They don't think it's the meds and I'm to keep on with them. I wrapped an ACE Bandage this morning which they are happy with so as to have gentle pressure on it all day holding the gauze pad in place, not to cut off breathing of course... we'll see.

    BIG DEEP Breaths :)

Thanks... I need a vacation somewhere warm, with Daquiris. BF and I have off of school in a couple weeks, we are hoping, hoping, hoping that he is stable enough to come with us so we can take a much needed vacation (all year we run two adventure based businesses and work in education that is our one possible week of fun for the next 365 days!)

    • Gold Top Dog

Gosh, how scary this whole thing must be for you. :(  I think you've more than earned a vacation and I hope One Ton is well enough soon so you can get away for a few days.  Hang in there, Karen and One Ton.  Strong vibes from me and my 4 pack.

Well, we're home and leaving the neck wrapped, he's having a very bad day. He's weak today and no interest in food. I tried to give him some canned AD and he puked it up. He just sinks back down to the floor. He's really feeling terrible today. :(
    • Gold Top Dog

I'm sorry. Might be he is just weak from the loss of blood...hopefully once that is recitified he'll perk up...maybe he needs some iron? Have you got any liver to try to give him? How are his gums?
