Karen, hugs to you! I know this is so hard and stressful. Sending lots of positive energy and good healing vibes your way!

Might be he is just weak from the loss of blood...hopefully once that is recitified he'll perk up...maybe he needs some iron?

Gums are ok... pink they refill fairly quickly which is why we didn't bring him back in this afternoon. Unfortunately, the Canned AD which is high in liver and iron, he vomitted up. I'm trying a very simple dinner of turkey, egg and rice... he doesn't have a lot (well any) fat reserves and now he has not kept food down in 36 hours. I will try and syringe a few small syringes at a time and keep it slow... no iron in rice, but maybe a little in the turkey. i'm not expecting him to want to eat based on how he looks... if I can get and keep some syringed food into him, I'll try a dog vitamin as well later. If he is still like this tomorrow I'll bring him back in of course.

Is he tolerating the anti-nausea meds? Poor One Ton, I know you just feel really crummy! Try to eat some big guy.

    • Gold Top Dog

That's gotta be just real sore all over -- which is enough to put many dogs off their food.  Keep him accountable -- keep telling him you *want* him to eat, and that he *needs* to eat.  And frankly, I'd tell him about the vacation and that you *want* him to go with you, but he's gotta get a bit stronger.

This isn't the vet who does the TCVM is it?  I wish I could get some Curing Pills to you -- (Plum Flower) -- they are the *best* easy-on-the-body anti-nausea meds ever.

Is he keeping the Reglan *down*??  You can get that in a shot if need be.

Has the vet talked about putting a drain into that area so the fluid (whatever it is) won't build up ?

One Ton...I know you feel icky....but ya gotta eats a little bit.  Can ya do that for us big boy?  Pretty please ??

Like everyone else, I'm hoping One Ton is feeling better today. Let us know when you get a chance.

Sorry for the delay in updating.

He was still feeling really crummy this morning, barely tolerating me syringe feeding him and i've got it spaced out as his stomach is all out of whack all of a sudden. Loud bowel sounds and nausea... he doesn't swallow some of it and vomits it up hours later, undigested, as if it sits in his throat. I'm trying to be positive with him, and trying to keep his spirits up, but he's not doing well. All of a sudden he doesn't want to even keep his head up for feeding. In the beginning when I had to syringe feed, he swallowed willingly... now he does not. I got food into him, in the hopes that it will perk him, up, but there is something wrong. This morning at 5AM, he puked up about a quarter of last night;s dinner (turkey and rice ground up) and it looked the same as it did when it went in 6 hours earlier :(

He's acting like he did when he went down to 50% of the pain meds... as far as I can tell, he's kept down most all of the medicine I've given him so it's not that. This morning his neck was not bleeding so left the bandage off.

I don't know .... I'm likely going to have to bring him in again today to the vet, not sure what else they can do though...

No, he wouldn't tolerate the anesthesia right now and there's something weird going on in that area that I certainly don't understand, I wonder what the internal damage is.

It's gotta be related to when they drained the fluid last I would think since that seemed to be when he went in to a down turn. I would take him in for sure. Poor guy, I'm so worried for him :( You don't think he could be bloating or anything do you?

Me too, and there is a fine fine line between torturing an animal because you want them to survive and helping them towards a goal Today, for the first time, I felt like I was not helping, but hurting him in asking him to eat. Before when I fed him, he didn't sink down and turn his head away, he willingly swallowed and "participated" this was more force feeding, which is not cool. He could be bloating as you mentioned, but I don't think so (he's not drooling and the belly is not distended, though he is not pooping), if he is there would be nothing more we could do, I would not attempt surgery in this state. I will check on him when I get home today. I called the vet, they're not having me bring him in, but are adding another med to control vomitting they are aware of what is going on and there is not much else they can do either... he's got to heal and take an up turn, or not, but it's really up to him and his body right now. It;s not like they could do exploratory surgery or something, I wouldn't ask him to go through that. He's on two pain meds, two antibiotics, two liver support, and soon to be two anti nausea/vomitting meds...

I said to BF yesterday that this is very hard and he pointed around the house at all our retired sled dogs and commented "it's going to be hard a lot" he's right...
