Update Pg5 :( Patrick is gone (miranadobe)

My sister's dog, Patrick, went to the vet today to have a lump aspirated.  Cytology will be back tomorrow (but there was a lot of blood), x-rays being performed tomorrow as well.  Lump appeared suddenly and is on his throat - vet cautiously suspects lymphoma or thyroid cancer.  Partly because of the location, partly because of the rapid appearance of the lump.  My sister hugs him all the time and the alert to this lump came when a hug elicited a yelp/cry.

This is the dog who had the TTA surgery in Sept of '09 that some of you may remember me talking about what an amazing patient he was.  He turns 11 in February and his mom has had him since he was about 4 months old.  Prayers for skillful vet advice and counsel would be welcome.  We'll find out tomorrow afternoon what he's dealing with.  Thanks, all.  Callie, I especially welcome your support on this.  I started to explain the alternative medicine options you have experience with, etc, and she has requested I help her find those vets/resources in the Seattle area who are experienced with Chinese medicine, accupuncture, etc.  Thanks again.  *sigh*

Paige, we are wishing Patrick and his mom all the best!

Paige -- http://www.tcvm.com -- on the left is the locator.  If she is at all close to a border have her look at the state listings as well.

Also -- have the vet consider just a big huge INFECTION.  Is there anything in his recent history that might lend itself to just a fertile place for infection in the lymph system??  It can happen and it can look SO MUCH like lymphoma.

You are more than welcome to give her my email (callie at critturs dot com) -- I am happy to help ANY way I can.

Good vibes for your sister & Patrick.  Please just let this be a huge infection as Callie suggested it might be.

Sending good thoughts and prayers to Patrick and all the humans who love him.  (((hugs)))

Paige our very best going out to Patrick, your sister and you!

Come on big fella you are going to be OK!

I missed this yesterday Paige but wanted you to know I'll be thinking of you, your sister and Patrick and praying for a simple infection or anything that's easily treated.

Oh gosh, I really really hope it isn't lymphoma.  I remember having to wait for Tessy's biopsy to come back (took a week) being a wrack of nerves waiting and hoping.  Felt like someone punched me in the gut when the results came in!

Patrick got my thoughts and vibes that it comes back as nothing.

    HUGS

Saying prayers for Patrick.  Hope the lab results show something minor.  My thoughts are with you and your sister.

Well, chest x-rays reviewed, cytology report back - definitely not thyroid.

Vet says "in all likelihood" either hemangiosarcoma, or lymphoma.  Says the tumor is inoperable - orientation around the blood vessels I assume.  Based on the fact that his spleen, and heart look "really good", I tend to think that it's more likely lymphoma vs hemangiosarcoma.  Bloodwork all came up good - it's definitely not an infection.  (which, yes, I was confused that a dog could have hemangiosarcoma or lymphoma and the bloodwork look "good", but that's what sis was told.)  His lungs, unfortunately, look bad.  Lots more grey shadowing/masses in his lungs as compared to his pre-surgery x-rays a year ago - vet held them up side-by-side to show my sister the difference.  X-rays will be sent out for further review as well.

So, there it is.  She doesn't want to be selfish and prolong his life for herself.  She's making him comfortable and happy and spending as many quality days together as they're given.  He was sent home with deramax and "some doggie narcotic that really isn't an actual narcotic" to help temper his discomfort/pain.

That stinks.  I hope Patrick can remain comfortable for a while.  Though, no amount of time prepares you to lose them.  We hold these dogs in our arms but only for a while, but in our hearts forever.

I'm so sorry!  Do you know if she's going to get a confirmation on diagnosis?  Lymphoma is one of the easiest cancers to treat...and there's been lots of discussion on alternative treatments lately!  *IF* she's going to do what you said and take him home to enjoy the remaining time they have I wonder if she'll use prednisone.  It'll help and some dogs (few) actually achieve remission just from pred.  Other small things...there's been lots of talk as of late on the benefits of high dose Vit C and turmeric....among other things.  There are cheap natural options if she wants to try them!

Give her my best wishes and healing vibes for Patrick.
