Need serious good thots, Malamute stuck in hole (outdoorschik)

Just got a call from the SAR folks up here. There was a couple who went hiking, their Malamute fell in a hole and they LEFT him there and went home. They called the Forest Service to inform that they were abandoning their dog and returning home. The Forest Rangers are hiking in as I type to assess the situation and provide food/water for this cold night. Tomorrow morning I've volunteered to hike in & help as they have a second (human) rescue going on. Good thoughts for this guy as he spends his night in a cold icy hole (it is a ravine where there is ice and snow all summer). Please think about him and wish us luck in getting  him out of there. We've volunteered to keep him as long as is necessary to help. I am amazed at people today I would be sitting at the edge of that hole all night if I was his owner.

Although I can't even begin to imagine leaving either of my animals!, I am grateful that they at least called Forest Service to give the dog half a chance. I will definitely be thinking good thoughts for him. And a new home, with owners who would never consider abandoning their animal.

I'm just blown away. Yes, they called the Forest Service... thank goodness for that. I'm so grateful they did so folks can go in to try to rescue him, but the callousness of people just hurts to think about... the fact that he is cold and scared and alone in a boulder field in a crevasse is so sad to me. God forbid he tries to get out himself in a panic an injures himself more... I don't think I'll sleep a wink tonight.

How awful! If one of my dogs fell in a hole, I'd stay with her until we could get her out! Eeks!

One thing this dog has going well for him is that he's a malamute- made for that cold weather. So hopefullyi h e's not too worse for wear when he's found and rescued.

Sheesh.  Good thoughts for the guy!

Just found out the poor bugger is nine months olds .... still a pup! The forest rangers are going to camp near the hole all night and we'll go in in the morning.

man! how could someone do that? I just can't imagine. I'd do everything I could to get one of my dogs out

Good news... they've gotten him out of the hole already and are moving him through the boulder field!! Fingers crossed they get him to solid ground. I will update once I hear more.

great news Karen!  That poor pup!

But really what sort or owners are these people, sigh

Oh, that's good news--I just saw this and was getting teary just thinking about the little guy. Sending lots of prayers for safe travel through the boulder field with no injury to the pup or the rescuers.

thank goodness there was an update BEFORE I posted.

You don't just go off and leave your dog in such a situation.  For crying out loud.  I could say more, but none of it is good, so shall refrain.

From what has been described to me, since I've never been to this place, they say it is the height if irresponsibility to bring a dog to this place. Now, once you've gone and done something so irresponsible to a creature in your care to go and leave it in a hole to drive home several hours south to your comfy bed is just so beyond me.

I can see one person going to get help, or even both if they were not dressed to spend the night outside, but once you got help you'd think they'd be the first ones going back in. Apparently, he is really panicked and they are trying to help him through the maze of icy rocks. They will call me if they need my help... fingers crossed he gets out safely and does not panic any more than he is.

I could rant for pages too. I don't know what these peoples' rights are, but I hope they are prosecuted... fully and that they don't get him back.

OMG! Someone hand me the 2X4, I'm going looking for these folks. Ugh!

Now, a Malamute is built for cold weather, yes, but a 9 month old pup that hasn't yet seen a full winter is not going to have the coat or conditioning to spend a night in the ice. He'd be better off than say a little dog or a greyhound or something, but geez, he's just a baby! I'm so glad they got him out. I hope he's ok.

Karen, is he going to stay with your kennel? Will we get pics? Oh, I hope he's ok.

Seriously? I hope they don't get him back!

Huskymom - yep... that's what I was going to say. I felt/hoped he'd survive the night at 40 degrees on the ice, but it really wouldn't have been easy for him on ice in a summer coat, never having been exposed to these type of elements and at that time I was worried about injury/shock as well.

I don't know yet. The coordinator let the forest rangers know I am ready to come get him immediately if they need me to. He's not out yet though and the last update indicated they didn't know if they could get him out without help since he was so scared, just that they were going to keep trying to move forward. She was going to update me as soon as she heard more but told me they were making very slow progress. I don't know the legalities/jurisdiction in this area around dogs in this situation. We do not have a shelter up here, though I don't know if the Forest Service has somewhere they house dogs in this type of instance. So I wait.... I made it very clear I'd help in any way I could. I'd be happy to help him even for the night. (to be honest I was ready to donate vet care if he was injured since obviously the owners wouldn't have). My vet is "animal control" and they are closed, so I'd not be shocked if they took me up on it.

I will be thinking calm, safe vibes for this poor little guy and the forest service personnel helping him out :( I hope they all get somewhere safe and warm, soon!
