Kelly - hoping for unusual governmental expediency for your Dad's insurance!  And sending strength and resilience vibes for him to hang in there and stay whole and sober!

Kelly, sending lots of good vibes for your Dad during this tumultuous time.  I know the government isn't usually quick about processing things like this, but we'll keep fingers crossed.  Your Dad is so young -- with lots of years left to enjoy his human and furry kids.  I hope he remains strong knowing he has the support of his daughter, and hopefully other friends and family nearby.  I'm glad he has his dogs to be by his side daily (I'm assuming he's keeping the dogs despite the divorce, right?).

It sounds like he's had his share of struggles in his lifetime.  Hopefully, this will be a situation that resolves quickly and doesn't snowball for him.  Best wishes to both of you.

He has applied for disability to get Medicare (Medicaid?) but won't have an answer for several months.

My BF is disabled - the first answer is usually "no".  Tell your dad to find an attorney who specializes in disability law.  What happened to my BF was that he paid the attorney a percentage of the amount, once the SSI started (they send a lump sum check from the date of disability).  He had his medical expenses all covered.  If your dad can't work, he can ask for help from the welfare or transitional assistance department in your state. Also, there are independent living centers in some areas that help disabled people navigate the system.  If you can'r find one, maybe your local Area Agency on Aging can help you find one, even if dad isn't old enough for their services.  good luck!

Thanks for the tips Anne. My mom (who was married to him for 24 years) and I are trying to help him out. He said the other day though that from the time the disability is approved it takes 24 months for the Medicare benefits to kick in... Do you know anything about that?
