Things you can Teach with the "KM" philosophy

    *G*

No, this is not a sarcastic push against any "published" trainers. This is also not a title I am attempting to develop. But it's also my way of not using terms that compare my teaching style to another, because people get easily offended that way. So this is the KM philosophy - the Kim MacMillan philosophy on dogs. And these are just a couple of videos that demonstrate some of the tasks that I have taught my guys over time using this philosophy!

As a note: The reliability of the behaviours are only as good as I have expected them to be, and to the degree to which we have worked on them. Most of these videos are teaching journals, therefore they are not all the finished products of behaviours.

Another side note: Yes, I have the awful habit of teaching in my PJ's. I like to be comfy when I'm working with my dogs. ;-)

    Gaci's Video Learning Journal:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw2qkWZDC9A
(includes such things as parlor tricks, cleaning up toys, retrieving remotes, playing the part of a sailor......)

    Gaci's Drive/Tug Work:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4FrPwUb810

    Shimmer's Video Learning Journal:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fF_1rg3CBU
(Includes such things as Obedience behaviours, Rally behaviours, and parlor tricks)

    Gaci Hike:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erJISyaF2Z8
Features off-leash hiking along with recall from a distance.
Note: I say off-leash, although you will still see a long line dragging with her. This is for emergency measures only, not because I don't trust her, since Gaci is human- and dog-reactive (not aggressive, fearful), so it's there just in case the need ever arises. I can and do send her out on a 6' lead and no lead as well, depending on where we are and if there are likely to be any people present.

    Shaping a left-head turn

    Shaymus Learning Journal:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwxM4kvP2Ak
Features are mostly obedience-related tasks - heeling, waits, stays, turns, automatic sits, etc. You can see discretely where I reward, the intensity of the reward, how I work to perfect behaviours (rewarding only for what I want, setting up to try again for less-than-desirable attempts), how I regain lost attention, etc.

    Shimmer Obedience Journal:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Nu5h5iRjg
Features are mostly obedience-related tasks. She is a litter sister to Shaymus, for interest's sake. ;-) This video shows the humbleness of my teaching where even the mess-ups are included. ;-) Such as walking on when she has stopped (Oops! My bad!), running into her when we both have different ideas as to where we are going, etc.

101 Things to Do with a Pop Can (Repeat)

This has been shown before, but it is a video that several have enjoyed so I decided to include it. It's a shaping exercise involving an empty Pepsi can.

    Cool videos. Thanks for sharing.

And I hope this starts a trend of others sharing videos.

I wish I had one to share, I don't even have a recorder.  But when I do I would love make movies, I would be in my PJs too. Big Smile

Kim,  thanks for sharing your videos it was fun watching you work with your dogs.

I'm still at the point where I can barely get the still shots off the camera and onto my 'puter.  I don't have a clue about the other stuff.  And, I want to know where you got those lounge pants.  They are uber comfy looking.  I'm a comfort freak!

What impressed me most about the videos was that even when a behavior was a work in progress, you were "up" and the dog was having fun.  You didn't get upset when a behavior didn't happen right away, you just waited for the one that you could click.  Very nice of you to share the videos with us.

    Pj's....I am snickering here.......

     Interesting videosWink

Usually, a dog would be somewhat slowed down by towing a dragline.....just usually though....not always.....

I think that is one piece of advice that works in realms of training.  Usually...not always.

True.  In my own case, my hound was slowed down by his drag line - which made it possible for my BF to be able to let him out to pee. (The dog would not go to anyone but me when he first came home - he was something of a "weenie" until he realized that BF was not like his foster dad.)  On the other hand, Sequoyah was not slowed down one iota by a drag line (or anything else LOL), and she didn't drag it for long - just for the three days it took to housetrain her (smartest little dog I ever had).  Just didn't need it.

Kim.....the pop can deal had me on the edge in the beginning....I thought there would be some super cool tricks...but, in an over 5 minute video I watched you click and hand out at least 20 treats to keep the dog away from a pop can.....sorry, I could have accomplished that in a couple of minutes....no clicks, no treats..........and no hands on the dog.....

Moderators note:  The OP has shared some videos of how she works with her dogs.  If you don't like the videos, or think that they are less than you expected, I would expect you to share that in PM and not on the forum.

Glenda, sorry, but she posted this on an open internet forum....so, is it not for open discussion then?

No Snownose, the CT was not to keep the dog away but reward the dog for touching the empty pop can or your typical item in a garbage can.  So, please KMc explain how this does not teach the dog to raid the kitchen garbage.

Also, is it safe to say that you are changing the dog's motivation drive toward the can as a toy?

Just wanted to add, I know this is a shaping exercise, but all that clicking and treating just to get a simple response....that is why I love the way I train.......big praise for the right behavior......and getting a play session........yay.....

Open discussion is one thing.  "I can do it better and faster" comments are not needed.  And especially not when they will serve to cause a further division on the forum between the different training camps.

Sorry, Glenda, but I have to disagree.....how many times do we have the clicker and treater trainers point out how well things are going in their world, and how much better they are.......sorry, it is what it is......
