Questions about Leerburg.....

I think I fall in the middle.  While I wouldn't want to have an out of control dog with no training in my house, I also wouldn't want one marching around like a soldier either.

I have to defend the "working dogs" in this... mine at least.. I have two working dogs one GSD and one Rottie.. both are Schutzhund trained dogs who definitely do NOT walk around like little soldiers... Working dogs are just like responsible working humans.  They like to play and have fun but know when it's time to go to work too.[:D]

Yes, you are correct and my comment didn't come out right!  Maybe it was my confusing the "yank and crank" with the working trained dogs.

Read 5 dog training books and I'll get 5 different answers to questions.  It's confusing at times for a newbie like me.  However, even since posting this thread, I have read many articles on Leerburg's site and have found them interesting.  I do not train working dogs but I admire those that do.

Sometimes Ed has some quacked out ideas, but some are good.  We don't use the "yank and crank" methods either.  We use treats and toys.  But we do use pinch collars, and we do use strong, sharp, corrections when the dog is way out of control.  The trick is to use one good one rather than 50 nagging ones.  It all depends on the dog I think.  We never put a pinch on the old guy, and never on the Shepherd.  The Rottie on the other hand.... he's just a monster sometimes.  Corrections are good.. if used correctly.  I firmly believe in creating a bond with the animal and making him enjoy and want to work for you, rather than coercion and force.  I watched a couple of Dildie (however you spell it) and I liked his methods much better!

    Shelby,
Who are you training with in IL?  What titles do your dogs have (if any)?  Where are your Rottie and GSD from?

General questions, I find both your dogs quite striking ^_^

My boyfriend handles them.  I just love them and irritate him by telling him he's doing it wrong....lol  I watch see how the dogs are reacting and tell him better ways to try things or what the dog isn't understanding. He laughs at me and tells me I need to stop having conversations with the dogs!  I'm not by any means an expert on the subject but I've done a lot of studying of it in the last two years, and I know dogs.

We currently train in Madison actually... it's funny I see the pic on your post of the Drachenberg shepherd there... I've seen those dogs?  I think we trained on their field once when they were over by Sun Prairie maybe?  Or the name is familiar for some reason.  Maybe we talked about Drachenberg with someone recently.  I can never keep the names straight.

The Rottie comes from Madison.  We've only had him for about 8 months and he had a really hard life before we got him. We're working on his BH and BST right now.  In the beginning my bf was averaging 3 or 4 bites a week just trying to get him to do basic obedience, and play.  The previous owner was extremely hard on him. We're bringing him around tho.  He loves to bite and totally excells at protection work.  Getting him to out is sometimes tricky and obedience is just... "blah" for him.

The Shepherd I don't know much about where she came from he had her when we met, other than her breeder is no longer in the business due to family problems.  She's got a lot of the Winerau lines in her.  More show lines than working lines, even tho she does love to work.  She's a little bit civil doesn't always aim for the sleeve, she's more than willing to take a chunk out of your leg, arm, hand, wherever she can get you if you make her mad enough. We had to have her fixed because she ended up getting pyometra.  She's more the kids dog really.  Pitches a royal fit if she can't be with them outside or out in the house playing!  She has to protect her "babies" lol  We've ordered her scorebook and then we'll title her.  She's more than ready.
