    The Owner's Equipment

I'm curious what others think about CM's willingness to use the equipment that the owner already has on the dog.  Do you think it's because he feels that the owner will not be willing to change anything about that?
I find myself making suggestions about equipment changes, from time to time, if I think it will benefit the dog, and have often wondered why he doesn't seem to do that.  Does anyone know for sure?

How do we know this was not brought up?
I am sure the entire session is shortened, and we get the filtered version.
I have seen him bring in certain equipment.

I've kind of wondered the same thing myself. The only thing I can come up with is that it will be easier for the owners to change in other areas if they do not have to change other things that they are comfortable with.

I think it also helps reinforce Cesar's emphasis on state of mind over special tools. I remeber a recent episode where he helped a pitty who had a severely injured leg that was pulling during walks on a harness. He helped the owner to get her to stop stop pulling even without switching to his usual slip-lead. They wanted the pitty on the harness to help support her injured leg.

I only really watched the first season "cover to cover" but I remember back then he would change equipment. I remember distinctly him bringing a nylon slip collar to many of his clients and explaining what it is, and that it's used when people show dogs, and how it works and where to position it. So I was surprised when I started hearing people saying that he uses the owners' own equipment because back when I was watching, he often didn't.

Yes , he changes equipment sometimes, like the one when the owner was having his pitbull on a chain to walk him because he was breaking any other kind of leash, CM just switched to the "35 cents-slip-lead" to show the leash didnt have to do with anything

I've also heard it said he doesn't change equipment, but in a couple of shows I've spotted that the dog *appears* to be wearing a different kind of collar and nothing is mentioned about it.... I'm not sure if I imagined it or if he really did switch to something else and if he did switch I'd like to know why.  Just because I'm nosy really.

It's just one of the many "By the ways" I wish would get mentioned more on doggie-type TV shows.  Like, "By the way, we have changed the X type of collar to Y because X wasn't working because blah".  Or, "By the way, the owner tried to overcome this dogs fear gradually using roast beef but it wasn't working and so blah".  Or "By the way you shouldn't try this at home because blah".  I think that kind of thing would make CM's show more rounded and make it stand out from the other shows with a similar format you can see on TV.

There was a video posted on this forum where he rolled a dog for being DA.  The owners originally used a harness but he changed to the choke for the roll.

He also did this in the episode with the therapy dog. Changed from harness to choke. A roll was not included in this one.

He does it quite often. (change equipment)

The episode with the dog and the injured leg...I caught that as being "make like a tree".  He would stop, say halt, then wait for the dog to calm before moving forward. I want to add that I feel like this dog in particular needed to maintain a certain stride in order to stay off of that foot and that is why he pulled.

Thanks.  I think it must be just the episodes I've seen lately in reruns then.
Does he ever use headcollars as so many of the top behaviorists do?  I have never seen this either, but since I don't watch every episode...
If not, does he have a position on them?

Thus far, I haven't seen a head collar nor easy walk harness.

I do remember an episode where a head halter was briefly shown and explained.  I can't remember which one though.

A halti was used on the dog Opie in one episode, because the owner's previous trainer had recommended it to help keep control of the dog's head due to his severe dog aggression.

The result was a redirected bite upon the owner which she could not keep clear of due to the design of the equipment. This dog had already bitten her before Cesar started working with her. I hope he suggested getting rid of it in favor of a neck collar.

I haven't seen much use of his own "Illusion" collar, yet.

Well, a Halti isn't what I would recommend on a biting dog either.  But, with a Gentle Leader, you can close the dog's mouth and avoid the bite.
So.maybe the previous trainer didn't know the difference between the action of the two.
Angelique, I wouldn't necessarily assume that a neck collar could stop a dog intent on a redirected bite.  In fact, it gives the dog more latitude, not less.  A lot of those bites happen too fast for most owners to realize and react, and second, with the GL at least they can keep the dog's focus where it belongs, not on the other dog.  So, it's proactive to use the headcollar, then reinforce the dog for being correct.  Usually a redirected bite happens when the dog's attention is not where it should be.

His way to see it is that it does not matter what kind of leash you use, is the way you walk your dog what makes the difference, the right attitude is the only thing you need

He wants to emphasize, that it's not the equipment but the *energy*. (Energy and timing.)
He does change it once in a while if a dog has developed negative associations it, or if he feels a dog just needs a more appropriate tool in order for the owners to be able to control it.

PS. I really respect him for that!

... and what needs to be changed is the human, not the tool! [;)]
