People Magazine Article on CM

    Houndlove,

    Still off topic.

I agree with you here, but you must always consider the source...what is "the media" FOR...if not to bandy about hot button words....misquote...take out of context...overdo everything they cover?

LOL! I know how the media works all right - I work for a newspaper! Luckily, we're a small-town paper. We just turn minor County Supervisors meeting "disagreements" into "heated arguments" or ocassionally label a pot possession a "big drug bust" Makes boring small-town life a little more exciting [:D]

As usual, you only show up in this section to drag the topic off course and push the agenda of the "Positive Only" extremisits.

But the People article IS the topic of this thread!! Just because someone doesn't agree with you, doesn't make them 'off-topic'!

Haha! I live in a small town too - the excitement never ends!

Discussing the article is one thing. Taking one sentence out of context and going on a "rant" in a section where rules have been set up to prevent this behavior, is quite another.

It seems like when someone has something to say that differs from the beliefs of other members of the forum, they get immediately shutdown. No wonder we can't have interesting conversations and debates - everything gets taken so personally. For example, I really like the book Scaredy Dog for dealing with Scout's issues. I think the methods and ideas in it are intelligent and insightful. But if someone came on here and said "guess what - that book is useless" - I would be interested to hear what they had to say! Why can't we discuss things like that? No wonder people are leaving the forum - who wants to come on here and have their thoughts shot down and labelled as 'unacceptable' when there is nothing personal or attacking about them? I understand that it's inappropriate to criticize another forum member's ideas, training methods, etc - but we are talking about a public figure. I think that makes him open for discussion.

Just read the People article (I think kindly posted by espencer or someone quite early on) and this bit made me hoot!

    Ditto to your post.

But it does seem to sum up the way the anti-CM crowd feel about him.  It has nothing to do with misunderstanding or jealousy. It's frustration.  He has achieved the status of celebrity and he's using it to push ideas that most trainers have been trying to move away from for decades.  They must be tearing their hair out, all that hard work trying to educate people and make life better for dogs and CM effortlessly reduces it to nothing.

LOL And thank god he doing so. He's shedding light upon darkness IMO. I guess they'll (the whiners) will just have to get over it.

What he does is not really new.  It's old stuff, old ideas, old techniques.  A great many trainers and owners started out with similar ideas and methods, being touted waaaay bfore CMs time and, with time and experience, found other ways which they perceive to be better.

Just because they "perceive (what they do) to be better". Doesn't make it so. I feel no need to comment on the rest of your post. Happy hair pulling.

    No problem.

Simply open a thread in another area, post Mr. Derr's entire article, and everyone can have at it.

Open a thread about any public figure in the dog world in another area, and everyone can have at it.

There are certain rules of conduct and boundaries which have been set up for this area of the forum.

    Worth another read I think.

How can we set boundaries and provide leadership for our dogs, if we can't even respect a few simple boundaries set up by a human leader on a dog board?

I think a big part of the problem is that people go straight to "that idea is crap!" instead of saying - "Hey - this technique worked better for me. Here's why..."

Imagine someone telling you "those pants make your butt look HUGE!" Even your best friend would have trouble pulling that one off without some hurt feelings and serious defensiveness.

A total stranger could say "I think these pants would be really flattering on your figure!" and you'd appreciate their comments (then wonder if they're looking at your butt.)

Edited to add: I'm seeing this behavior on BOTH sides, so don't get the idea that I'm trying to single anyone out!

well, as far as the Millan topic goes I've found that there are three choices, the two predominant ones are either worshiping or bashing. "If CM said it it MUST be Right/Wrong (depending on who you are talking to)". The third, which is usually overshadowed by the two first, is an actual discussion of which parts work and which don't. People are so sold on what they know, that anything that will contradict it, whether it's right or wrong, irritates them. I just have to wonder what my life would be if I got irritated or defensive about all the information that is out there that I know or believe to be wrong. At the end of the day you use common sense and hope that everybody else will too, which in most cases is wishful thinking.

Hey Eley! Care to join me in the middle of the road with the yellow line and dead racoons? [:D] You have to watch out - the traffic is brutal here!

Myself, I do neither. But I certainly will comment on what the bashers say. I love using all the the techniques I've learned because I'm aware that no one technique works for evey dog. A simple and true fact. IMO

While we may never agree on dog training, I'd just like to say, your dog is beautiful.
