Chains with a lock

    Chains with a lock

I was watching the CM marathon the other day and they had this nice young man with an out of control pit bull named Justice. The kid had a huge chain with a lock around his neck as the collar and a smaller chain as the leash. I don't know why but this bugged me, it looked heavy. Cesar made some comment before taking it off that people do this to make the dog look mean, have any of you seen this before??? The kid claimed he chewed his other collar, but a chain seriously ?

Usually, you see this on Animal Planet, just before the animal cops seize yet another fighting Pit.  [;)]

People do use heavy chains on these dogs, sometimes to make them look mean, sometimes to keep them from being stolen, particularly if the dog is kept outdoors (the kind of neighborhood you live in matters when you have a Pit - they get stolen as breeders, as bait, and as fighters), and still others use them because they do have a problem chewer on their hands and have never learned how to deal with that in other ways.  Personally, it always makes me think of the Christians about to be thrown to the lions, and I don't care for it at all.  There are other ways to keep your dog confined and safe.

The chain looked like a logging chain .

My neighbor has a stupid boy who put one on his dog.

It is sort of faddish for "I'm cool and my dog is mean, and oh yeah, I'm cool (plus I am a stupid boy)"

CM knew this and called him on it.

I've also heard that people do that to help build up their dog's muscles (for fighting - what else). My dad used to keep his coon hounds on heavy chains, but he used leather collars. The heavier chains didn't tangle as easily and don't break if a raccoon dared to appear within 5 miles of those dogs.

I remember this episode, and noticing the lock and chain.

I also remember the demeanor of both the mother and the son. I don't remember any "tough-guy" attitude on the part of the son. He seemed rather soft-spoken to me and his answer about the chain seemed honest.

I'm glad Cesar pointed it out and asked him about it.

I totally agree, that's why I said in my origional post he was a nice young man. I was glad to see Cesar discourage this :)

I dunno...maybe that little dog had jaws and teeth so powerful that a 99 cent chain collar from wal mart wouldn't work.

I will admit to knowing nothing about pitts.

Unfortunately I did see this once. Hot, hot, hot summer day. Eggs were frying on the sidewalk. I had stopped at the local convience store on my way home. When I entered the store, I was a little startled to see a dog standing at the counter with his owner. My first reaction was, this is much better than leaving the dog outside in the heat. When I looked at the dog I noticed she was a smallish pit who had recently had puppies. Around her neck was a chain. Without a word of a lie, each link was about the size of my fist. The chain had been looped x2 around her neck and the owner had hold of approx. 3 feet of the chain, using as a leash. I couldn't believe it! Not wanting to start anything, but unable to let it pass, I sarcastically said 'Is that chained big enough?". Of course he just looked at me, said nothing and led the poor little thing back out into the sweltering heat. Grrrrrrr!

My border collie mix could chew through her regular collar if I didn't fit it properly... any dog could!  Pit bulls have the same jaw pressure as any other breed.

I'm not surprised that dog didn't want to walk on her "leash" lmao...

That's what I was thinking...how in the world could a dog chew through a collar unless it is horribly too long or something?

The client did show multiple collars that had been chewed. Did the dog actually chew those off of his own neck?

How does a dog get its teeth that close to his own neck?

Now I have had only long snouted dogs, so I am wondering if this is something that a smaller snout can easily do.

I am shorter snouted than a pitt...but put a collar on me (that fit) and I don't think I could chew it off.

I think one could reasonably assume that the collars were too large, or his snout too small (nahhhh) [:D]

Or....maybe...it was easier to find a log chain than to buy a collar that fit..

Where does one find a logging chain these days anyway?

So the train of thought is as follows:..."well every collar I buy for this dog is too large.  Oh, I know...I'll buy a log chain.[sm=rotfl.gif]

Ahh, the fun of the wannabe bad***es and their big chains.  I always wondered if it were just compensation...

Anyway, there are some instances where I can understand a chain, but they are few and far between.  APBTs are notorious for being able to get over, under, or through even some of the most secure fences you'll ever see.  I can see it used in place of a normal tie-out for use only if the owner is not available to supervise potty time.  That said, it sounds like it was way too big of a chain for the dog.  Large chains are horrible on the dog's back and neck.  The people who have these massive chains on are not trying to strengthen their dog, if they are, they don't know enough about it to even attempt it, they are trying to look "bad" in the eyes of their neighbors and peers.

I saw the episode and i remember really well what they said to eachother:

CM: So whats the deal with the chain, is to make him look tougher?
Client: No, not at all, is because every leash i have used breaks because he pulls really really hard, the only "leash" he cant break is a chain

At that moment Cesar toke off the chain from the dog's neck and put a 35 cents nylon "leash" (almost the same as a shoe lace but larger) and showed to the client how to walk properly a dog without him pulling, at the moment CM toke the leash he was grabbing it with only 2 fingers and the dog was walking right next to him, is just about having he right attitude [;)]

Our Dalmation could chew through any collar that was loose enough to fit your fingers under. And he could get off any collar that had more than an inch of strap that stuck out from the end of the buckle. We were thrilled when those adjustable plastic snap buckle collars finally came out and we could fit it tight enough without any end so we could actually keep a collar on him without supervision. (This was about 10 years ago).
