Chains with a lock

I don't remember the dog having a pulling problem.  The owner pretty much had to pull him on walks didn't he? Ceasar used a bag of something to get him moving?

I thought he didn't  want to go on lead because he was once hit by a car....or something like that.

I dunno...I could be thinking of two different episodes.

I saw the episode and i remember really well what they said to eachother:

CM: So whats the deal with the chain, is to make him look tougher?
Client: No, not at all, is because every leash i have used breaks because he pulls really really hard, the only "leash" he cant break is a chain

At that moment Cesar toke off the chain from the dog's neck and put a 35 cents nylon "leash" (almost the same as a shoe lace but larger) and showed to the client how to walk properly a dog without him pulling, at the moment CM toke the leash he was grabbing it with only 2 fingers and the dog was walking right next to him, is just about having he right attitude [;)]

I think Cesar hit the nail on the head.  The kid wasn't a tuff kid but he thought it made the dog "look" tuff.  He was just a kid, so he did something he thought looked cool.  IMO

When I dated a guy briefly who lived in a gang ridden neighboorhood...I saw chains on Pitts all the time.  All of them did it to make the dog look tuff....some did it because they thought they could build up the dogs muscles by draping ridiculously large and heavy chains over their necks.  Broke my heart.

My thought was the kid knew better than to act tough or out of line in any fashion.  His Mother was there almost every minute.

You know how Mothers are, you can easily be convinced that you could lose a limb or two for acting out in public, let alone messing up on national TV.[sm=lame.gif]

He was a  good kid.  But the boy next door is plumb stupid.

Chains are all the vogue for any 'nasty-looking' pit-mix in the South.  I come from waaay up north, and when I arrived down here I was over-whelmed by the number of scruffy pit-mixes popular in most Southern neighborhoods.  I despise the sight of them-- I know that 9 times out of 10 the big scary chain collar is mean to give the dog a mean, tough look, and generally any owner putting such a silly thing on their dog hasn't trained it worth a darn.  I was tickled to see him immediately question the chain.

One of the things I truly enjoy about C.M.'s show is that he's never afraid to politely tell a dog's owner that they are being stupid, silly, or irresponsible.

it is certainly a Tough Look thing, but they also use heavy chains here to weight train the fighting dogs for bigger muscles [:(]

Chain is easy to get at any hardware store. You get it by the foot and they cut it for you.

I train my livestock guardian dogs to respect the electric fence by taking heavy link chain, putting a loop around their neck, then leaving a "tail" long enough to touch the ground if the dog ducks his neck. The chain must be heavy to avoid tangling on things - typical tow chain size. The chain makes contact with the neck and the tail touches the ground, making sure the big hairy dog feels the shock of the fence very well. It is a life or death situation that these dogs think God enforces those fences, so it's worth a couple weeks of wearing that chain.

I can't imagine why you'd want to do such a thing to a pet dog, though. Ridiculous.

    YES!!!! It's not just me!!

I saw that episode, and was very upset. He claims he wasn't trying to make the dog look tough. That's a bunch of BS if you ask me :)

I am SO glad Cesar commented on it and used something else!

I'm glad you brought this up, thank you :)

I was watching the CM marathon the other day and they had this nice young man with an out of control pit bull named Justice. The kid had a huge chain with a lock around his neck as the collar and a smaller chain as the leash. I don't know why but this bugged me, it looked heavy. Cesar made some comment before taking it off that people do this to make the dog look mean, have any of you seen this before??? The kid claimed he chewed his other collar, but a chain seriously ?

I believed the poor guy, i used to have an Alaskan Malamute, and he did the same with all his leashes, he just broke them all for pulling so hard (that's before i knew how to properly walk a dog) so i have to  buy a chain leash, it was not a chain itself like the one on TV but it was made of steel, at least that one lasted longer

I'm sure there are other alternatives.

I'm sure if it had been the Lab Mix they had, there would be no chain on it.

    And there wasn't, point proven.

I'm sure if that Lab could pull like the pitbull he would be having a chain also on him, he said he did it NOT  to make him look tough nut because the chain was the only  "leash" that was not breaking

Well of course he said that, Cesar woulda ripped him a new one if he did it to look cool. Ask any vet that the only thing chains are good for are giving your dog arthritis. Their are plenty of cable lines that are coated in palstic that he could have used. Not to mention there are plenty of dogs that pull as much or more then pitties and you dont see chains aroudn their neck

Some Labs pull pretty hard, as evidenced by the number of people who come to class on week #1 with prong collars and the leash wrapped around their hand forty times. [8|]
Funny, I don't see many Labs, Malamutes, or Huskies with chains around their necks...
But, Pits - all the time.  And, have you ever noticed how those boyzinthehood always seem to have male dogs???  I think the poster who mentioned compensation is right on the money.  The kid may be a nice kid, but he still has to exist amongst his peers at an age when belonging matters.

Well the guy looked like from a humble household so i think he is not an expert on leashes [;)]

SPencer, you are COMPLETELY missing the point of my posts.

I am NOT talking about the LEASH, I am talking about the CHAIN AROUND THE DOGS NECK.

Like I said, you wouoldn't see it on a Lab, whether they pulled or not. I don't believe for a second that he wasn't trying to toughin up the dogs image.

There are other alternatives, and maybe he truely didn't know that, but you've got to be stupid to think a CHAIN is ok with ANY dog. I don't care HOW strong they are.

I think it's cruel. But I can only hope that the dog is better, and has a real leash and collar. :)
