Shaker Cans?

    Shaker Cans?

whats the general idea on these? anyone use them? refuse to use them? i worry about making the dog frightened of noises but i also dont want to use a squirt gun to correct bad behaviors because then they will run and hide the moment i have to spray for fleas.

just trying to think of creative ways to get the puppy's attention and make her stop the nipping and ankle biting*i almost stepped on her head today while walking because she attacked my feet!!!*

I've used these for my dogs in the past and now for Simba. We just put a penny in an old soda can, put tape over the top so it doesn't fall out. Anytime Simba tries to nip at me, or does I just shake it. It's just so his attention is away from me so he's not biting me. :P Maybe some people don't like the idea of them, but I don't see it as a bad thing and it seems to work.

     What is it for?

Are you asking me or DumDog?

Either.  Is it a punishment?  I just hadn't heard of it before.

When I worked at dog day care, we'd use then to redirect a dog's focus if they were in another dog's face...not really punishment, per se. It worked probably 50/50. Some dogs were horrified, some mildly startled, some didn't care.

use then to redirect a dog's focus

Interrupts behavior so you can redirect.  Like throw chains in KMODT.  I equate the effectiveness of shaker cans to squirt bottles = not particularly reliable, and easily ignored, thus not reliably effective, just mho.

Liesje, just like they said, its a noise maker really. i've only ACTUALLY seen one used once by my grandmother with her toy poodle. and i cant really recall what the dog was doing for it to be used.. i was still young then.. but she used it as a form of light punishment it seemed. but maybe it was my perception at the time because i remember the dog being startled, tail between her legs and running to lie down on the sofa.

i've heard people recommend them but thats all they did and not to me- just in passing conversations or barely mentioned in books. they give a description - can with a penny inside and you shake it- and thats about it.

i'm only going by what i saw my grandmother do, which is why i worried because her dog was frightened of loud sudden noise. but i can see how it can be used properly as an attention getter rather than a way to frighten the dog. and i guess it also really depends on that dog then? i dont want to make any of mine afraid noises. i'd rather they be as bomb proof as possible.

AND this sounds WAY better than a slap on the nose!  (((or chewed ankles))) so far the only thing i do is pick her up off the ground when she does this but i've just about had it with that ankle nipping. i was carrying a plate of food for my boys when she did it this time so i couldnt pick her up and almost dropped the plate.....nice lesson and reward there... "bite mom on the leg and i get all the chicken nuggets i can eat!"

however.... it would have to be carried around all day if thats the case.... maybe i need to think of something else entirely... and be patient.

I wouldn't doubt we've all seen a grandmother rub a dog's nose in its pee, too.

Why on earth would anyone slap a dog on the nose?  Or anywhere, for that matter?

Oh no, it's more of a correction or just kind of surprising him so he stops.

When Buddy was a youngster (10 years ago), we were introduced to the shaker can by a so called trainer..cough cough moron, oh wait, boron cough cough.  Its intent was to distract him away from "whatever" with the noise of the coins in the can.  For example, Buddy would not listen to us when doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing...

However, this boron trainer threw the can AT Buddy.  So, not only did he get scared of the noise, but he was hit with the can!!!  Angry  Well, after I asked him why the he!! he threw it AT my dog and I offerred a few other choice words, the trainer was asked to leave.  And, although I tried to use the shaker for noise distraction a couple of times after that, Buddy was fearful of that noise.  So, the shaker can didn't work for us.  My poor baby.

I've seen them (over)used (badly) on Dog Borstal.  Some dogs will be terrified of them, some won't care.  There will be a few in the middle who are JUST startled enough by the noise for it to be effective, without being traumatised... but you may not know if you have a dog from the 1st group (terrified) until it's too late.  Honestly?  I'd RATHER see a Chht and a light poke than I would a shake can being used.  Yeah, really.

Sounds like something that would be more annoying to me than whatever the puppy was doing, lol.  Shaking cans, throwing chains, spraying water, swatting newspaper....these all seem like really fun games to Nikon and too much work for me.  Why not just say "No, puppy", remove the puppy from what it is doing, and place it in front of something more appropriate?  I love my puppy pen because it gives them more space and visibility than a crate, so they can play with toys but not have any access to things they shouldn't be chewing on (like the computer cord, the couch, my leg....).

It also makes a great drying rack!

I will say 'no' but when he doesn't listen, then I shake the can.

Pups are never born knowing what "no" means.  You speak, and when he doesn't listen, you gently REMOVE him - and give him something appropriate to do.  Shaking a can at him doesn't teach him anything meaningful.

I tried one once, and the pup was sneaky enough to always be a brat or do something I didn't like.... when I didnt have the thing on me.
