super lazy pup?

I am one of the ones who works in rescue also and of course I dont like pet stores ways of doing things or puppy mills BUT I did find mudpuppys comments rude.... just think theres a better way to go about "educating"[8|].  I toally agree she may not have meant it that way, but I thought it to be rude as did the person she was speaking to. 
 
I think its also important to state that this does not mean a pet shop puppy is going have a horrible life or anything of the sort....  it means it proabably had on up until now and "may" have health issues due to poor breeding... but they again they may not. 

thanks for all the support and information... shes starting to do better as far as getting used to the house.. she still sleeps a lot, but shes been more active lately so im really happy about that.. i think i was just over reacting and she just needed to get used to the house and everyone..

banky - FWIW  for the first week or so, my puppy literally slept all but a few hours of each day!   His days went like this:  eat breakfast, go out for potty, play for a bit then pass out.  Wake up, potty, eat lunch,  lay for a bit, pass out.  Wake up, potty, eat dinner, play, pass out.  I think it has to be *extremely* exhausting to suddenly be placed on another planet, where everything is new and different AND your littermates and momma are GONE!    OH and you're growing like a weed the whole time   As long as she's eating and eliminating and is bright and alert when she *is* awake, it sounds totally normal.

When I got Trudy (avatar) she wold be a riot for about an hour in the a.m. and then crash for an hour.  She would do this again at about 2 in the afternoon and then in the evening.  My SIL came over one afternoon and expected this bouncing puppy running around like mad and Trudy was out like a light.  My SIL thought that she was sick. 

She's 2 now and still must have a nap at 2 in the afternoon and goes to her bed and crashes at night even if I'm up late banging away at the computer. 

this is all such great news.. for a second there i thought my puppy was broken ;x  lol

She is just a puppy and like any baby they do sleep a lot.  My dog slept a lot when he was a baby too.  He's 4 and still does, ha ha.

These pet shop pups need homes too.

 
What you have said otherwise is true, but please don't adopt this attitude - *this* is what keeps people "rescuing" the pet shop pups, and what keeps this horrible system going.
mudpuppy could have said this in a nicer way, since the object is to educate, but you must understand that those of us who make dogs our life are tired (soooo tired) of seeing the agony that dogs go through because of mills.  The only way to stop them is by *never* buying from pet stores (or from "virtual millers" online). 
banky, we are sure that once you have been educated you will never buy from a store again, especially once you realize that you have probably overpaid for a pup whose parents were living in squalor, bred to death, and not health tested or maybe even not offered the most basic veterinary care or humane treatment.  We do realize that you love your new puppy and want to do right by him now that he's in your home.  Hang out with us, and keep learning! []

Im a vet tech at the shelter... I help train them at the shelter... clean cages although Id prefer not to... but mostly just vet tech there.  
 
I dont have an attidude that we need to "rescue" pet shop dogs Im just stating that they DO need homes... they DO.  That doesnt mean we need to go get them... I was just saying that they didnt pick that life.  I would prefer people not buy from them and of course I never would.
 
Im sorry I just dont feel like I even need to defend that.  Oh, and TRUST me my life revolves around the shelter and the dogs in it....

I did mean to be shockingly rude. I was trying to educate readers of the thread about pet stores and puppy mills. A casual reader of the thread could have easily gotten the idea that buying a pup from a pet store was an acceptable practice. Although how anyone in this day and age can't have heard about the horrors of puppy mills and their connection to pet stores is puzzling to me.
 I hope the pup does well for you. Sadly a huge proportion of pups that end up being dumped in shelters as adolescents come from pet stores-- because they have mental and social and housebreaking problems people can't deal with. The first few weeks of a puppies life have an enormous impact on the dog's future behavior.

Maybe it's just a stage she's going through. Maybe she's just bored or still not used to her new environment. Have you tried engaging her in some activities/play time in the house like fetch, etc?

also, if it makes a difference, the pup was with the shop for only one day before i picked it up..

 
sorry I am very late on reading this thread and just wanted you to know that there is no difference to how long she was in the pet store, what does make the difference is how long that puppys mother and father have been crammed into a cage throwing out litter after litter?
 
No I am not trying to be rude, many of us dont know the horros of puppy mills and I truly hope your pup is one of the good ones, but it does help to know this information for future reference.
 
There is a pet shop at a big mall that gets there dogs from BYBs and I would never buy a pup from them because they are ridiculously high priced and the dogs have no health guarantee. So if you buy a 900$ Lhasa and the pup drops dead 5 minutes after purchasing you are scre$$ed because they have no health guarantee
