    super lazy pup?

hey guys, i recently bought a 9 week old female Siberian Pup from a local store around my area and shes VERY lazy.. heres a picture, i brought her to the vet today for her first visit in which she checked out fine, but she even slept through the examination..  when she goes home, shes hyper and active for a few minutes at a time and then just sleeps after that.  Im not sure if this is normal for her breed and age, or is there something i should be worried about.  the only time ive seen her very active is when I took her once to the park with a friend who has a 2 year old female siberian and she was very active at the park..

    any suggestions/comments?

This is a question you should have asked the vet while you were there.  Sounds perfectly normal to me.  She is growing and that takes ENERGY and energy requires sleep.

Where are you located?  How long have you had the pup?  Sometimes changes in climate and scenery will stress the pup and the pup will sleep due to this stress.

I was going to ask a bunch of questions about the pup, but since you got her from a store, you don't know the breeder and can't ask the breeder any questions.

Like Glenda said, pups are growing and they sleep alot.

damn glenmar, you're like, the super poster here huh?  lol

i did ask the vet if it was normal, and she suspected that its just socialization issues with humans because she does get a bit more animated when other dogs are around..

    Not exactly super poster......

We did used to breed cockers and currently foster gsd's, normally the ready to pop momma's to be, or young litters, so I have a LOT of puppy experience.  I try to post in places where my experiences can help.  But, you'll rarely see me on after say 9PM....I'm an old broad and turn into a pumpkin about then.....

Puppies need a ton of sleep.  They get crazy and hyper then they crash for a good long time, and when they sleep they sleep hard.  This is normal.

They also take at least two weeks to get settled in a new home and to start to realize that they are staying there.  This transition can also cause them to sleep a lot more.

If while you were at the vet she got a set of puppy boosters, that can make them very very sleepy for the next few days on top of everything else.

you DO know that buying puppies from petstores is really bad idea? that they come from horrors called puppy mills, and the money you paid for the puppy is supporting abuse of more dogs in these places? that the puppy is very likely to be physically, socially, and mentally unhealthy? very likely to be extremely difficult to housebreak?

wow, talk about lowering your spirits..

well first, obviously i didnt know that or else i wouldnt have shopped for her at a pet store.. but now that i did buy her at a shop and she is now a part of my family, id rather concentrate on making her better/healthier (if shes not at her best already).. id appreciate if there wasnt any scolding in this thread, unless of course its helpful to my cause, and seeing as how Kalua is now home with me, there was no need for that reply.

    thanks.

also, if it makes a difference, the pup was with the shop for only one day before i picked it up..

Im sorry mudpuppy responded to you that way.

A lot of people dont know about pet shop puppies... Kalua is part of your family now, and lucky to have you.  I love her name.

We are generally very friendly people and are more than happy to help you with any questions you may have about anything.  And, if, you pup does end up with health problems its not the end of the world, weve got a lot of great people here who know a ton and can help you help her the best ways possible.

For now her sleepiness seems completely normal.

    Do you have any pictures?

What was attempting to be said...

Pet shop puppies generally come from a "puppy mill".  That is generally a place of breeding with poor conditions and the dogs being bred as well as the puppies are not having the greatest of lives.  It should, in fact, be stopped.  BUT... the majority of people dont know.  Thats okay, if no one ever told someone how would they know?  Tons of people buy pet shop puppies every day and dont know anything about it, and I think its wrong for someone to jump on your case like that.

And... just my opinion as this has been widely discussed.  These pet shop pups need homes too.  I know you dont want to support the mills but what about these poor pup who didnt ask for any of it... they deserve good homes just as any pup does.

Does the vet agree with her age then?  Typically pups are shipped to petstores at about 5 weeks of age so that they are still "cute", and are sold VERY young.

Mudpuppy did not mean to bring you down, nor was she trying to be unkind.  It's important for you to KNOW that your little one did not come from stellar lines, that she came from parents who were NOT health tested for genetic conditions common to her breed, and yes even that her mother has been breed each and every time she comes into heat, most likely lives in a cage her entire life.  This stuff is important to know so that you can be alert for problems, such as not respecting her crate as a place not to toilet...that's common for pet store pups, and common for any pup that has spent their formative weeks in a cage with no other place TO go.  It's important to know that house training *might* take longer because she was kennel raised and not home raised, that her bite inhibition probably sucks because she wasn't with her littermates and momma long enough to learn that and other valuable lessons from them.  I honestly think you should goggle your breed and "genetic weaknesses" to find out what *might* happen with your pup in the future.  If it's HD for example, learn the signs to watch for, and be sure you talk to the vet about xrays when she's old enough so that you don't get caught off guard by a huge surgery bill...and so you can start supplements EARLY to postpone that surgery as long as possible.

The "tone" that you likely *think* you are seeing in Mudpuppy's post isn't one of rudeness, she's truely trying to educate you, and our lurkers.  One would hope that you had no idea.....but, now you do and won't make the same mistake next time.  If you look up ANY of the many puppy mill threads here, you'll love your pup even more for the rough start she got in life.

Please understand that many of us work in rescue, foster (I have failed foster 101, 102 AND 103 which is why I now have SIX german shepherds) volunteer with shelters and basically bust our butts to HELP animals.  So we do tend to get a bit testy about the puppy millers that supply the pet stores.

Sorry to keep re-posting... wanted to add that your pup is more than likely going to be FINE mentally and socially too as that will depend on how you raise her.
