I am new and did introduce myself in the Intro section...

My issue is that I feed Wellness, Fish and sweet potatoe. Mostly hard with a small portion of the soft. My older dog is having the runs. He's been tough to put weight on his whole life, and always been a picky eater. With this Wellness he cleans up and is looking for more.... Is it the food that's too rich? Does his system not handle it, and should I try a different type of the food? Or Is there an Immodium for dogs until he seems to harden up? Help!!!

A few tablespoons of pureed PLAIN pumpkin with meals can apparently work wonders for firming up the runs.   How long has he been on the Wellness?  Did this start when you started feeding it?  If yes, then he may be reacting to the food.  It also might be a result of switching foods too quickly, if you think that could be the case.

    Welcome to the forums!

I'll try anything!!! He's been on it for a month or so and his stool sometimes is good and other times projectile. I try so so hard to switch slowly, I became very famillliar with slow diet changes when we thought he had food allergies.....

Is the pumpkin palatable? He is fussy... Do I have to do it myself or can I buy it canned?

You can buy canned pumpkin, as long as it is plain pumpkin and not seasoned in any way (not pie filling).  I've never tried it with my dog (I live in a place where canned pumpkin is NOT available) but apparently it works wonders.  Just mix it in with the food, he'll probably eat it.  Pumpkin has a naturally sweet flavour which is palatable.

What did you suspect he might be allergic to?

The initial "diagnosis" was all animal protein. He was Vegan. He hated it and of course had no relief. Finally a specialist... Atopy... now hair and coat are good. Still scratches, but dust and pollen in S Cal is tough to completely keep him away from.

    Sweet God I hope:

    a) he eats it

    b) it works

At this point I am willing to pour Pepto or Immodiun down his throat... Pumpkin sounds like a much better option... if he eats it....

Well it's been proven to work...on most if not all dogs who have tried it....so fingers crossed he eats it!  Many dogs just do better on some foods rather than others, but I completely understand that you're limited in your choices by what he'll actually eat.  The best food in the world will do no good if your dog just turns up his nose at it.

Try the pumpkin for a few days and (assuming he eats it and it works) wait until his stools firm up again.  Then try without the pumpkin again.

For the record, this is NOT my area of expertise (I don't really have one LOL) and this is about as much as I know on this subject.  There are many people here who might have more suggestions/knowledge for you, I just answered because you really seemed to need some help quickly.  The others, I'm sure, will be along soon.

I really do appreciate the help, and I will try it!

Have you taken him to the vet and asking about food allergies or digestive disorders? My BF's family's dog has had some sort of similar issues, and someone on this board suggested it sounded like "EPI." Here's a website on it: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/exocrine_pancreatic_insufficie.html

I would switch from Wellness because it doesn't sound like it's working for him. What other foods have you fed?

It's possible that fish doesn't agree with him or it might be the different grains (or type of grains) in Wellness. A vegan food would have mostly grains, so since that didn't work for him, it seems like grains MAY be the culprit. Or he might have IBD. It's really hard to say. If you haven't already, I would try a limited ingredient diet like Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison or Potato and Duck.

He has been mainly on hypoallergenic foods Z/D and the Veggie version of something that I fed so long ago I can't remember it's name,,, he is almost 8...

I suppose it could be the fish, but the State Vet told me the fish was the least "hot" of the bunch and would irritate his skin the least....She is rather bright, though she is an equine practictioner. I hate to change his food yet again, especially when he looks so good, but if I have to I will.. he can't be having any fun....

Ahhh, okay. I didn't realize that he also had itchy skin issues, I thought it was just digestive stuff. I have heard that barley is a "cooling" grain, but I didn't know that the same principles applied to meat sources. Maybe Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish then? It's grain free and the only carb source is potato (sweet potato and regular potato). I've heard of a lot of dogs having loose stool on Wellness, so I really don't think that's going to get better. If you added pumpkin then it might help, but you would probably have to add it permanently. I think it would be better to find a food that really works for him.

Here's a link to the food I would try (it also has matching canned food and treats):

Sigh... new food.... head hits desk.....

Try the pumpkin for a bit.  If he likes it strait up, great.  If not, I find that my dogs will gobble it up if I mix it with plain yogurt.  Yogurt helps with digestion too so it won't hurt.  Try to get some with live cultures in it.  I then freeze the remaining mixture in ice cube trays and pop them into a baggy.  Whenever I need one(or rather whenever Crusher needs one) I just grab a cube and voila!  an icy crunchy treat!

Whenever I switch foods now, I buy a can of pumpkin.  Give him some pumpkin and a few weeks to adjust to the new food before you try switching him to anything else.

That said, I have found that nothing has hardened up my dogs stool like going raw.  Its great for allergies.  Lots of work and research, but IMO very very worth it.  My dogs have never looked better.  And for Crusher, my digestive Rocket, if you will, things have turned right around.

It's up to you whether you switch foods, but it doesn't sound like this one is working and I would switch.

    Sigh...

The thing I like about the wellness is he actually eats it. He's never been this heavy. I bet he's atleast 70 lbs and he's held weight at 67 for a LONG time! It's odd that he has the runs and he is gaining.... anyway, we have to do something so..... a slow change it will be... with probiotics and pumpkin....
