I am new and did introduce myself in the Intro section...

Well since he likes Wellness maybe you could try one of their other formulas.  They have a duck for allergies too.  Maybe that would work better and he'd still like it??  I bet anything it's the barley in that fish formula.

    • Gold Top Dog

its funny but my dog has itchiness in foods where barley is number one or two down the list of ingredients but if its farther down he does okay.  He is on a food now where barley comes after brown rice and white rice and he's all right with this.  It's hard to find dog food without barley these days; it seems like all the companies except a few have replaced the rice with it for some reason.

I've experimented enough now that I realized that if it's ground barley Willow is OK with it.  But, if it's not ground she usually can't tolerate it.  And, yes, the further down the list the better.

tried the pumpkin by itself... he looked at me like I was kidding and walked away.... BUT I tricked him into it with his dinner..... Sweet God I hope this works or I will switch.

So, whats the verdict?  Any improvement?

    • Gold Top Dog

Very little... Should he improve rapidly or a slow progression?

    • Gold Top Dog

Well I usually see improvement within a day or so.  But then I use it more as a preventative now.  And I had figured out the issues with Crusher before I found out about the pumpkin so the first time I used it, it wasn't after a long bout of the runs.  It may take a few days.

Curious though.  Have you told us how big your dog is?  And how much pumpkin are you feeding him?  Crusher gets 2 or 3 big glopping spoon fulls if he already has the issue.  2 or 3 times a day.  He is about 75 pounds... maybe a bit more.

    • Gold Top Dog

He's 70lbs. Usually holds at about 67 but has been gaining since Wellness.

He gets a heaping tablespoon of the pumpkin with each feeding but it's hard convincing him it's food. He's way too human and way too picky. Today he only ate it because Maven (the puppy) was staring at him...

I have a puppy that was having very bad digestive problems on very good foods.  Another member of the list suggested a supplement called FreshDigest, after trying pumpkin and all other things first.  The FreshDigest has worked WONDERS!  He has been on it less than a week, and he finally has normal stools and is happy, playing, and eating well for the first time since I've gotten him home.  You can PM me for more details if you'd like, but you can find it at PetCo.

You could probably up the pumpkin a bit, but try mixing it with plain yogurt.  I think I already suggested it.  Crusher doesn't care for it plain either, but he devours it with yogurt.  Half and half give or take.  The yogurt is good for digestion too.  Hopefully Kale likes it too.

Sigh, I am a bad mom.... And yes thanks to you that's how i get him to eat the pumpkin... natural, plain, yogurt from Whole Food.. That he likes! The pumpkin not so much.

I am worrried that if I up the pumpkin he won't eat.....

I also had excellent results with Fresh Digest.  I used it daily for about a year.  The other thing to consider is that if he has issues digesting dairy and you add yogurt to the pumpkin that might cause it to not work.

For what it's worth, Willow would never eat pumpkin when I tried it either.

Oddly enough, Crusher has issues with dairy.  Milk, Ice Cream, Cheese, you name it, he has issues with it.  He can eat yogurt though.  In fact, I'm lactose intolerant myself, and I can eat yogurt.  There's something different about it.

I'm trying, I am trying my butt off... his stool is coming... the pumpkin.. well he eats around it now....

Haha...I don't suppose reasoning with him will do much good...Stick out tongue
