"WHEAT GLUTEN NOT SOLE SOURCE OF PET FOOD POISONING" 04/04/07

    Toronto Daily News, April 4, 2007 -
Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to blame tainted wheat gluten for recent cat and dog illnesses and deaths, a mounting number of complaints about sick and dying animals who ate only dry food that did not contain wheat gluten strongly suggests another source of contamination.

Evidence from reputable laboratories indicates that an excessive amount of vitamin D in pet food may be to blame. Vitamin D overdoses produce symptoms similar to those seen in animals who recently have become sick or died after consuming only dry foods.

I don't have a link for this, but it was posted by a Vet tech elsewhere.

Hill's has just announced that pet owners who fed their cats the Hill's Prescription Diet Feline M/D dry food are eligible for a one-time payment of $100 for testing expenses (bloodwork done to determine renal values in suspect cases). This payment will be managed by your vet, if you tested your cat prior to this notice, your vet can reimburse you for testing costs you incurred.

So, anyone who fed Hill's Prescription Diet Feline M/D, get your cat(s) tested immediately, and ask about the reimbursement.

    MORE STUFF RECALLED

This is a separate recall, but it includes bully sticks, so everyone check it out. This came in on one of my other dog lists today. I went and found the link myself.

Salmonella Found In Dog Chews Manufactured In Washington

(Ferndale, WA) -- Just as pet owners begin to recover from a massive
pet food recall the FDA announced a recall of pet treats. A Ferndale,
Washington company is recalling its puppy and dog chews because they
have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The FDA is
warning consumers not to use American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy and
Dog Chews manufactured and distributed by T.W. Enterprises.

This is just getting worse and worse.  I know IAMs dry (what my Mom feeds Nikki) isn't on the list, but she's taken her off it regardless.  Because of all the cryptic, half-info, changing info, and more foods being added to the list she just decided it wasn't worth it.  Thankfully Nikki likes her new food, and hopefully it won't show up on the list at some point.

This is just scary, I am glad to see some movement underway in the government about better regulations.  Perhaps to some they are just "animals" but for those millions of us who share our lives with them, they are often much more than just pets.  At the very MINIMUM they are living breathing creatures who deserve better than this.  I realize that even with human food problems occur, but this is quite frankly dispicable (sp?).

At the request of the Mill Valley Pet Clinic, three varieties of Nutro Max Cat Gourmet Classics, in 3-ounce cans, were tested by the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The food tested positive for melamine, which has been found in wheat gluten imported from China. Melamine is used to make plastics and other industrial products.
