let's make this the "Enron" of pet food safety and use this moment of crisis to make sure long-term changes are made to protect the lives of our companion animals.

And bravo to you, too. This puts it in a nutshell.

This is what I expressed to the FDA lady I spoke to the other day.  I told her to register my complaint as "I want the scrutiny of pet foods to meet the standard applied to human (I said "baby") food, and the standard for that needs to be hjgher, too."

Copied this from Nutrition Section. Cazzy had posted it. But thought I should post it here too.

This is NOT related to Menu Foods, but a treat sold at Target and PetSmart is being recalled for contamination with salmonella. Full press release below.

BTW, Innova dry is made at one of the Menu Foods plants, but has no grain.....I'm still nervous - what if it does have melamine???
ORIGINAL: spiritdogs

If you're feeding Innova kibble, spiritdogs, I think you can feel a bit less nervous, because Innova's CANNED food is what is made at one of the Menu Foods plants (the South Dakota plant, which is thus far not affected in the recall. So far, it is the Kansas and New Jersey plants that were affected). I called Innova to confirm this, after reading a list of what pet foods were and were NOT made at Menu Foods. It's my understanding that Menu Foods only makes canned pet food, not kibble, but I'm not 100% sure.

I posted this before, but for anyone who missed it, here's a place to see an updated list of Pet Food Companies who USE Menu Foods vs those who do NOT. Note that some companies use Menu Foods for their canned goods, but not for other goods (kibble, etc). Other companies have nothing to do at all with Menu Foods. It made for a very interesting, eye opening read, that's for sure. I never realized that many of the "high end, all natural foods" also jobbed out their manufacturing. Some do say that they provide their own ingredients. I'm just glad I homecook for my little dog. I don't know what I'd do if I had a HUGE breed! *probably go broke, because I'd be feeding him fresh food too.... sigh*

I don't think this has been posted yet - the recall has been expanded.

Hill's Prescription Diet m/d dry Feline food and Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food have also been recalled after being linked to the contaminated wheat gluten supplier.

Del Monte said the wheat gluten they bought was food grade, which means it may have been used for making human food;   [linkhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-goldstein/tainted-wheat-gluten-sold_b_44743.html]http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-goldstein/tainted-wheat-gluten-sold_b_44743.html[/link]

Crap.  What the heck are WE supposed to eat while we muddle through what to feed our critters???

What the heck, is this some sort of terrorist plot to drive us all insane?  They don't HAVE to kill us....just drive us nuts.....and we'll do the rest.

I have to admit I am pretty worried about the recall. Baby is so old (almost 17) and fragile.  Madi is soon to be 9 and had liver problems.
So today they recalled both of Baby's treats.  The pounce and the jerky.

What is lucky is that she really does not like either of them.
The pounce stains the carpet when it comes back up and the jerky was hard.  FYI the jerky was recalled for salmania poisioning.  (All Dingo Treats)

Now I am researching Madi's treats and I find more bad information.  Feel free to check out the link. [linkhttp://forums.ebay.com/db1/thread.jspa?threadID=1000463956&tstart=0&mod=1174951771114]http://forums.ebay.com/db1/thread.jspa?threadID=1000463956&tstart=0&mod=1174951771114[/link]

WHAT CAN WE FEED THEM?????!!!

Madi is sitting next to me wondering why I have all the treat packages next to me and I won't share.  Research...don't think she knows what that means.

YIKES!  POUNCE???????????    I believe I have some for Bubby!   I was told that little moist cat snacks are wonderful for SPECIAL TREATS for dogs...I bought some for Bubby. I only use them for one thing,,,when someone comes over...and she barks a lot...they are to show her that the company is WONDERFUL!   Yikes...I have to check into that. I bought them a while back though.

I really came her to say that I'm sure that the government and everyone who can is working on where this tainted wheat gluten all went to.......................but as far as I am concerned,,, not hardly fast enough. Too much time has gone by with not knowing who all got that wheat gluten. It doesn't seem right....seems they should have figured that out by now.  This could be a matter of life or death for humans as well as pets.     I'm beginning to think conspiracy....even if it IS far fetched!!!

Yeah.  That's what I feed my dog, but not the wet food, only the dry food.

I don't know if these links will help at all.

Edited to add:  I heard that there was some food recalled due to poison that is used in some countires to kill rats.  I also heard something about wheat gluten.

Veterinarian Uses Drug to Treat Dogs Sick From Tainted Food

POSTED: 11:32 pm EDT March 30, 2007

Longwood, Fla. -- A Longwood veterinarian has been successful with a treatment to counteract the poison that some believe is making pets sick.

It all started with a patient.

Tara Jenner's dog, Holly, got sick earlier this month.

Vets at Longwood Veterinary Clinic determined Holly had kidney problems, and discovered she'd been eating some of the food, now recalled by Menu Foods.

The New York state food lab claims aminopterin is the contaminant that's making animals sick.

Aminopterin is a former cancer drug, once used in the United States, until it was banned. It is now used as a rat poison in other countries, like China.

Jenner's brother is a research scientist, and knew aminopterin's history.

He told Tara about another drug, Leucovorin
, which was used in the U.S. when aminopterin was used as a cancer drug, to counter-act the negative effects of it.

So Tara told Dr. Shellie Campbell, a veterinarian with Longwood Veterinary Clinic.

Campbell researched it and they decided to give it a try on the dog, Holly.

"Leucovorin is an activated B-vitamin and is able to get past the toxin to help the cells start functioning again," said Dr. Campbell.

After two days of the Leucovorin treatment, Holly's kidneys were back to normal.

The vets at Longwood Veterinary Clinic are cautious about saying this treatment is the magic bullet that could save all animals that got sick.

In fact, they believe Leucovorin is too strong for cats to handle.

However, for dogs, they say it's at least worth talking to your vet about.

I sure hope this is being investigated by possibly the FDA or any organization that is trying to help in this matter!

The girl that wrote that article was on CNN last night.  Hoping that a lot of people watched it and will make sure to not let this just drop. There was way too much time between them finding out they had a major problem and letting the public know.
Not only that,,,the amout of death reported to Pet Connection are at almost 2,800 as of March 31.  Its got to be higher by now! And what about the people that have outside cats that they feed. Wonder how many of them are dead when the owners think they just didn't come back to eat yet. What about the pets that died or are sick that people DIDN'T report,,,either because they didn't know anything about it...or because they don't know where to report it.
And what about those poor people that spent a lot of money when their pet got sick  and was treated and took them home and fed them the same poison food???  THIS is a shame.  This company should have put this information out sooner. This was a respected company so they say...I hope that the companies that use Menu demand some answers.
AND the public needs to know that there is a heck of a lot more than the 15 dead cats and dogs that the news is reporting!

He's going to have a news conference tomorrow [Thursday] ; Senator Durbin will discuss the Menu Foods recall, the FDA's regulation of the pet food industry and the impact on pets and their owners across the nation. He will announce plans to work with Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI) to hold a Congressional hearing on the recall when the Senate reconvenes.

I just heard on the new the other night that there were chemicals in one food (I don't remember which one, aren't I helpful?) that were used to make plastic kitchen utensils.
