There is a website that is keeping count.  But it is not really official. It seems to have all of the current information on it.

This looks like a good site, but keep in mind that the count of effected animals is anedotal.  It may contain a significant number of animals whose illness is not related to rat poisoning.

And it probably could have more than one person reporting the same pet!

Menu Foods is in CANADA, folks. Not the USA.

Just fyi for those talking about the wheat. The exchange rate was probably not good to get American wheat, but it's not like Saskatchewan doesn't have wheat! [:@]

Actually, Menu Foods has their headquarters in Canada (Mississauga, ON) but also has 3 locations in the U.S. (Pennsauken - NJ, Emporia - KS, and North Sioux City - SD).

The tainted food came from their Kansas and New Jersey plants.

But it's true that North America produces TONS of it's own wheat. I don't see why they should be taking it from China.

I've been doing 1/2 homecooked, 1/2 kibble for Sierra, and I'm thinking of going 100% homemade. My dog's life is in someone elses hands - and thats simply not worth the risk.

I just heard on the news this morning that Menu Foods are asking stores to pull off the rest of their products, in fear that not all of the tainted products were pulled off initially.

I was a little off...they want the foods on the list all pulled.  Saying to forget the date codes entirely.

To me, anyone who is still feeding any of Menu Foods' products at this juncture is asking for trouble, especially since the source of the contamination has not been determined.
One of the people I work with said goodbye to her 15 year old Sheltie on Wednesday.  We don't know if his death was related, as he was fairly compromised anyway, but it was kidney failure that finally did him in - and he had been eating one of the tainted foods, but not within the last two months.  I believe, however, that the food in question could have been manufactured between December and now.  She'll never know if she hastened her own dog's death - too heartbroken to get a necropsy and toxicology report.

Agreed..I wont feed anything from menu food....And I am so sorry to hear about you're co workers dog...alot of this could have been avoided only if menu had put the recall out when they knew it was harming our animals..I heard they knew about this in December and did nothing till now

Anne, I have been having the same thoughts about Winnie, as she went down faster than we were expecting her to.  She wasn't eating a tainted food either, but it was SD rx food.  I am praying this recall doesn't reach further than it is right now...

Here's info listing dog foods and whether or not they use Menu Foods to manufacture their canned pet food. These foods are NOT currently part of the recall, however I think most will find it very eye opening. I know I did. I was shocked to learn that many of the all-natural/holistic type pet foods use Menu Foods to make their products. Some say that they provide all the ingredients; be that as it may, I still don't feel so reassured. I'm now more glad than ever, that I feed a 100% homecooked diet to my dog. I was using 50% homecooked to 50% Innova canned, but I've now tossed the entire unused case out...just to be on the safe side. My heart goes out to all those effected by this tradgedy.

This list is being constantly updated. It's a good site to bookmark. I got the link from a member on another dog forum (yahoo group K9Nutrition).

I think everyone should go to this site ,unbelievable , How many eggs they put one basket ! I cannot believe how many companies are using menu food…..I had no clue that my food was being made by another company other than Iams .when I spoke to the Representative in California he told me the only food that they made for them was the pouches. because the company was not equipped to do so .(you think he was telling the truth? )[sm=no%20no%20smiley.gif]

I#%92m so sorry to hear about your co worker dog. But this much more widespread than they are letting on
when I spoke to the veterinarian at Iams I asked her how bad is it and she said I can give you any numbers but it's really bad there has been a great deal of animals affected .

I sure HOPE this person is not going to lie when asked a question!

It is amazing to know how many brands of pet food (wet) are made by this company, but just like our human food..there are not as many companies making food out there as there are brand names.

I have read that the Menu company is the most respected company making pet food out of all of them. That might be true,,and they probably screwed up BIG TIME....and look at the results!

It does make us all have to think about what we feed our pets AND what we eat ourselves.

I talked to a Nutro rep. yesterday, she said that Nutro is considering making their own wet food now, as they do their kibble.  I am hoping that Eagle Pack is thinking along those terms also....even though I really don't feed cannned food to my dog.

PETA wants pet food recall expanded to include dry food

I just found [linkhttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17870750/]this article[/link] on MSN.com...  It basically says that a chemical used to make plastics, melamine, was found in the recalled pet foods.  Also, they're not sure if dry pet foods were contaminated with this chemical as well.  Apparently wheat gluten that was contaminated with melamine was shipped to an unnamed company that makes dry pet food.

PETA also killed how many adoptable puppies & kittens last year? Yeah, I don#%92t care to hear anything PETA has to say.

I have some wet cat food that I got for my cats, and was planning on looking at the site to see if it was recalled but to be honest, I am just going to throw it in the trash. If it isn#%92t Canidae or Felidae it is going in the trash. Which oddly enough no one around here carries Felidae wet…So my cats are doomed to eat dry cat food only.

I am SO thankful that I switched from Nutro almost 6 months back. I wouldn#%92t trust any dry food from them either.

I feel so horrible for people who have lost their pets.

About the recall thing, I have heard that with car companies, if a certain car has a defect they weigh how much it would cost to recall VS how much it would cost to pay lawsuits. It#%92s a very money hungry world we live in. I am sure they did the same with the animal food.
