It's always interesting to see how training techniques evolve over time.  Many of the birddog people have abandoned the "nick" method that was discribed here in favor of the low continuous stim method of *conditioning*.  They also do not, per say, train the dog using the e-collar.  The actual training is done in a +R method until it is certain that the dog understands the initial command being taught and then reinforced using -R with an e-collar to condition the response.  The only time you would use higher levels is to deter a dog from chasing deer or undesirable prey (trash busting).

I find it interesting that back in 2006, Mudpuppy, already knew and understood this method.  Smile

I agree. First I just read this whole thread like is was brand new...I have a special interest because I also have an e-collar. I don't use it for Gibson right now..maybe never will..it depends on him eventually.  But its weird, first I ever heard of one was when my son bought one for Ollie,,his Dane. He was trained with the "knick" method. It worked.  Then I got one for Bubblegum when she decided to always lunge and bark at oncoming bikes while walking..... I used the "knick" method and it worked. I got it back out a short time ago and watched the DVD that came with it...thinking to be prepared in the event that I use it for Gibson eventually. Was surprised to watch the stimulation method to teach. Was really suprpised. I am doing my best to teach Gibby without...but if it don't work... I will probabably give it a try the way I am used to ...it worked.   Yes...I'm convinced and impressed that Mudpuppy knows her "stuff" if she knew this method back then!
