Home Cooked Meals?

    Home Cooked Meals?

How many of you folks home cook for your dogs??  Toby is currently eating home cooked meals. He's never been a big kibble fan (but does enjoy some every now and then) We've already gone through Innova Evo, NRG, Go Natural! and now Canidae.

I just ordered a book called, "Throw Me a Bone : 50 Healthy, Canine Taste-Tested Recipes for Snacks, Meals, and Treats"  It should arrive on my doorstep by next week.

Anyone else have recipe books for their dogs? Any suggestions? Has anyone used the book I mentioned above?

I homecook and have a recipe that I'm always happy to share. It's tweaked and approved by a canine nutritionalist.  However, mine also eat Innova for breakfast.

My favorite homecooking book is Better Food for Dogs.  It's really easy to follow, gives supplement charts and gives substitutions for the ingredients in each recipe.  There are treat recipes towards the end.  It's well worth the little money it costs.

I like Better Food for Dogs, too. That one and Barker's Grub have to be my favorite, sensible approach home cooking books.

My dogs eat almost exclusively home cooked. I use a handful of kibble every month or so for treats.

Toby is one well dressed cool little dude!  I chuckle everytime I see that picture LOL!!!  Maltese???

I'm just learning to home cook for my dogs.  I'm seeking advice any place I can get it.  I've determined that the more I search, the more confused I get.

Like, I don't get this grinding up egg shell for calcium suggestion.  Can they digest it?  What if it isn't ground up fine enough?  Wouldn't that be painful going down???

Anyway, maybe I'll research some of the books mentioned here.  I wish us both luck!

I give my dogs whole raw eggs, in the shell, unbroken. They haven't complained about it, yet:)

You don't have to give ground egg shell, though. Most health food stores carry bonemeal powder.

Ah....I should have checked with you folks before ordering the book online. But I'm sure I put it to use....

The book store nearby has 2 copies of "Better Food for Dogs"!! I'm gonna go pick up a copy tomorrow.....

    Thanks guys!~

PS: Yes, Toby is a maltese....

Powdering the egg shell makes the calcium more readily available to the dogs.  Considering some of the other stuff dogs swallow, I doubt that a little piece of egg shell would really hurt, but if you are using eggshell for a calcium supplement it's just easier for their bodies to USE the calcium if they don't have to break it down first.  Do you really HAVE to?  Honestly, I don't know.  Both Mordanna and my overpriced canine nutritionalist told me to powder the eggshells, so that's what I do.

Michelle, anyone who has even skimmed the board has figured out that you believe in feeding raw.  So could you maybe stop beating us up with your methods?

There are folks who are not comfortable with raw feeding or who can't afford to feed raw.  It is not ok to make those people feel like less than good owners because they don't do things your way.

And some dogs, for various reasons, are not capable of thriving, or even surviving on a raw diet.

The alpha female also horks up chewed food for the pups, should we start doing that too? [sm=lol.gif]

Yes, and we could apply the same "theory" to us actually buying it at the store.  Should we go hunt an animal and drag it back home??  How ridiculous.
