    vegetarian dogs

Xoloitzcuintle (mexican hairless) are natural vegetarians, but convert to a meat diet quite easily.

    just thought this was interesting.

I didn't think there was such a thing as a vegetarian dog since they are all meat eaters that I know of. Interesting. Do you have any links in regard to reading up on this?

it was just mentioned briefly in a description about the breed, i didnt research it further, i just saw that and thought it was interesting.  like most breeds, this dog was made by man, so maybe it was purposely bred to be a vegetarian?  i really have no idea.  here is the page where it mentions it:  [linkhttp://www.dogbreedinfo.com/xoloitzcuintle.htm]http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/xoloitzcuintle.htm[/link]

I had an Irish Setter that would have been perfectly happy being a total veggie dog.  He would raid my garden and eat squash, tomatoes, peppers right off the vine.

One night the boys had several of their friends over for supper  (Actually this was almost every night when they wre in high school) and I had made spaghetti/meat sauce, green beans, tossed salad full of tomatoes, cucumber, red cabbage, red onion, etc, and garlic bread.  The 17 year old took out some garbage just as we were getting ready to eat, and came running in yelling about the monster rat at the trash can.  We all dashed out, but it was gone (suspect it was really a possem) and when we came back in Boots was on the table eating THE SALAD.  He ignored the spaghetti./meat sauce, bread, even the beans.  He was scarfing down the salad tho.

Thanks Jaye. Will read up on it.

Sandra, yeah I know they like to eat road side weed (salad) and veggies. Mine do too. They even like fruits. I feed them regularly this way in addition to the kibble. lol

I wasn't familiar with a breed that was bred stricktly for vegetarian purposes. Interesting huh?

i was just of the opinion that dogs, in the past history, were scavenger eaters but mostly on dead or dying animals.Never ever heard of  specific breed being a vegetarian...They are carniverous omnivours, eating mostly meat but the vegetables they got were from the stomach contents of the dead, dying, or fresh killed animals

That's absolutely not true. Xolos are... weird, for dogs. They don't look or act like most dog breeds. That is due to the fact that they are a primative dog, and were domesticated very early on (like Canaan Dogs and Badsenjis[;)]). They ARE canids, and carnivores, just like the rest of them.

oops, you re right that they arent a man made breed, i was reading about a few different dogs when i posted that and got them mixed up.  i guess they truely are naturally vegetarian, according to the site.

ecerpt from another web site that supports they are vegetarian dogs.

    Xoloitzcuintle Temperament
The Xoloitzcuintle is affectionate, attentive, quiet, and easy to train. Training should be neither too lax or too harsh. Pups may grow fearful and insecure if it is not raised with early socialization and firm, but not severe, handling. The Xolo makes a great watchdog due to its wariness of strangers, and the larger members of the breed will take cues from its master in terms of responding to strangers. The Xoloitzcuintle are natural vegetarians, and many enjoy carrots instead of rawhide toys.

here is another site supporting the fact that they are vegetarians:  [linkhttp://www.digitaldog.com/dog_breed/Xoloitzcuintle]http://www.digitaldog.com/dog_breed/Xoloitzcuintle[/link]

The Xolo enjoys a remarkable distinction.  While science indicates that the dog is capable of being kept as a vegetarian, the Xolo is referenced as having been developed as a vegetarian that now converts well to a meat-based diet.  This, in addition to its lack of fleas (a real boon to those with allergies and asthma) make it an especially compelling consideration.  Additionally, it is fascinating as a historical note since (to the knowledge of DigitalDog) there has been no widespread effort or study done on vegetarianism in dogs.  To have a breed that was developed and existed successfully is a major footnote worthy of consideration as questions of the quality of dog foods and the meat in them continue to be raised.

Named after the Aztec God-dog Xoloti and often eaten by its Mexican breeders, this is a functional dog, which the Aztecs used to cure rheumatism, relieve stomach pains and warm their feet – making the dog both medically useful and a preserver of energy. But, from such divine heritage, the Mexican Hairless is a humble dog, a pacifist dog, that will only meet aggression and not instigate it. It is also a vegetarian, which means it uses up less natural resources. If the Dalai Lama had been born a mutt, this would have been his chosen breed.

I can show you a few dozen sites that show that all dogs are natural vegans, and nobody should use any animal product for anything. You can read anything you want on the internet.

Xolos are dogs. They can mate with other dogs, and produce fertile baby dogs. Dogs are carnivores. Border Collies, Chihuahuas, Chinese Cresteds, Great Pyranees, and German Shepherds are carnivores.... It's just what they are.

why would all these different people pick out this one dog breed and claim it to be a vegetarian if it were not?
    • Gold Top Dog
Xolos are a mysterious and intriguing breed. There really isn't a whole ton of info available on them, as they are still quite uncommon.

In short, people make stuff up to make it sound like they know something. Honestly, no dog breed is any different, internally, from any other breed. There are books on which foods which breeds do best on. It's hogwash. Anatomically, dogs are the same.

maybe so, but thoughout history this breed has eaten a vegetarian diet.
