How much does your dog eats?

How much does your dog eats?

I finally got JJ to eat her food, 2 day so far but very little.  Do all small dogs eat very little ?  Do your dog take only a few bites and then walk off or do they eat up whatever is in the bowl you give them?  A 5.5oz can food could last for days because JJ would only take a few bite.  [8|]

Trixie gets 1/3 of a cup of Innova or Wellness twice a day with a couple of supplements.  Oh the days she is getting her Kong, I reduce the amount of daily kibble.  Most (not all) small dogs are danity eaters.  .

Daisy was on the streets for a while, and that's what I attribute to her eating everything and anything that is in her bowl in 5 minutes flat. She used to get 1 cup of dry food a day (in 2 meals) with 1-2 tablespoons of canned food.
Now with the elimination diet, she's getting .4 ;pounds of food a day. (turkey and barley) I really dont' know what that is in cups.

Daisy is the type of dog that I didn't let her be picky. If she wanted it great, if she didn't I gave her tough love and took up her food within 15 minutes. She only did it once or twice, but now she will eat anything!

I decided to just leave the bowl on the floor until she finish it.  Occasionally I will give her a few bite of the can food just to make sure she's at least eating a little something.  She also like eating kibbles with yogurt ontop.  Only once a day I find her munching kibbles but only a few pieces.  I can't wait till the day that she just eat up everything [&:]  Measuring her food everyday just to see if she had ate any or not.  [8|]

Max is a med/lg.dog (65 lbs.) & in the morning I put 1 & 1/2 cups kibble in his bowl.  He usually ignores it for awhile, then he takes a few bites and goes over to the carpet to eat it. He munches off and on during the day.  If he finishes it by afternoon, I give him another 1/2 cup in the evening. If he hasn't finished it, I don't give him any more. So some days he eats 1-1/2 cups and some days he eats 2 cups.  It doesn't seem like an awful lot for a dog that size, but it seems to work for him.

jake weighs 15 pounds and usually eats about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of food per day.  hes been eating like that for over a month now and he hasnt gained or lost weight.  i put his food down in the mornings.  if its something he really likes he'll eat most of it right then and snack on the rest later.  if its just kibble he'll ignore it for half the day and then snack on it the rest of the day.  if he eats it all i put a little more in his bowl just in case.  i never take up the bowl.

JJ eats soo little, I could leave a cup full of kibbles and it would last a week or more.  I mixed some kibbles with yogurt and she took a few bite and that was it.  I'm just sticking with not giving her anything else, not even can food until she finish her kibble.  Hopefully that day will come soon...........[&:]

My small toy poodle, Misty, who weighs 5 pounds, is also a very dainty eater.  Your pup is so adorable, how much does she weigh?

Misty eats approximately 1/2 of a small can of Innova each day and very little kibble.  She just doesn't like kibble.  I do supplement her diet with the occasional egg yolk and cooked chicken and carrots.  But, she does not seem to care about eating very much, unlike any other dog I've ever owned.

Up until recently, I free fed her, meaning her food was always down and she could pick her way through the day.  Alot of tiny dogs eat that way.  Some people find this method may present housetraining problems, though, as it makes their BM's unpredictiable and not timed around meal time.  We now have a 6 year old 10 pound toy poodle that we adopted, and he eats like a horse--eats alot and gobbles everything in sight, so I can't leave Misty's food down any more.  This has presented us with some challenges, but we are working through it.

Read the label on the dog food you are feeding and see how much it recommends for your dog's weight and try to have her eat that much every day.

I wouldnt hold your breath [;)] The feeding guidelines on the bag are on the very generous side. Some dogs will only eat half or a 1/4 of the recommended amounts.Seeing we are talking about a small eater anyway i cant see her finishing off what the bag says she should!

Fureverjen i really cant see your dog eating everything up straight away if the food is constantly available to her.Why should she??She knows the food isnt going anywhere so there is no need to gobble it down straight away.If you give her set feeding times she may realise that she must eat whilst the food is there or else she misses out.

Maybe she doesnt like the hard texture, most small dogs dont.Have you tried moistening the kibble so it's easier for her to eat it,it also wont take as long to eat,so she wont lose interest or get lazy a quarter the way through. What brand are you feeding?

I would not give her any other extra's whilst you are trying to sort out this eating thing.A couple of teaspoons of canned is alot for such a small dog and may be just enough to get her through.

Emma weighs in at 17 pounds, and eats as much as a 50 pound dog should. Her metabolism is crazy, and she has digestion issues. She eats a pound and a half of food a day (about three cups of fresh food).

Teenie is 13 pounds, and eats much more like a dog their size should. She gets under 1/2 pound, or about 3/4 cup of fresh food.

Any dog that has routinely been getting canned food will often turn up its nose at kibble.  Wet food smells better, thus is more appetizing.
When a dog doesn't eat well, the first thing to do is have the vet examine her - a dental problem will also cause a dog to resist eating kibble.
If nothing's wrong, then just find a brand that is appetizing and healthy (these usually are not found at the supermarket!) and put the bowl down for ten or fifteen minutes.  If the dog doesn't eat, take the food away till the next mealtime.  Dogs who always see the full bowl down all day know they can have it whenever...so they may ignore it at mealtime.  But, once they realize that it disappears, they tend to learn to eat dinner when it's served.  Always have water available.
Good dry dog foods: Innova, Canidae, Wellness, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, etc.

The last time she was weight, she was around 10 pounds.  She's not the small tiny pomeranian but still small in size.  [&:]  I had tried leaving the bowl there for 15-20 mins and taking it back.  She just wouldn't eat it like that and that's why it didn't work.  But if I left the bowl just sitting there, occasionally I would find her walking to it and munching on the kibbles.  I don't feed her can food every day.  Maybe 1 times a week because the can food usually could last a week or more.   She only take a few bites and would walk away.  I'm just concern if this is ok, with her eating soo less.  I don't want her starving but I don't want to freak out either over something that's normal.  [:D]  Ok......I will try the 10-15mins again!  Just as long as she eats, I'm ok with which ever way to feed her.  [&:]   One more question......... I am considering getting Wellness for her, can anybody tell me what they think about this brand?

i disagree with taking up the bowl after 15 minutes, you ve already tried that and it didnt work.  and you already dont mind leaving the bowl down for her to free feed.  i think she is acting totally normal and is eating fine for a dog her size.  i just dont see any problem,

[sm=eek.gif]  JJ is a stinky butt......hehehe!  I'm 50/50 on it...... why can't she make my job easier and just eat....... [:D]  Yea...it's going to take some time......I'm just going to have to measure how much she eats everyday.
