How much does your dog eats?

    • Puppy
I use Wellness or Innova, Trixie likes both.  I doubt that a healthly dog would starve themselves so she'll eat when you put the food down at feeding time.

I feed mine in the morning and at night. They eat as soon as I put it down. If they don't eat it, which occassionally they don't, then it gets soggy and I end up throwing it out. They won't eat just dry kibble and always have either homecooked or canned mixed in.

I've never fed the Wellness dry, but they love the canned. Lori use to or still does feed Willow Wellness I believe.

Some dogs will hardly eat what you want them to eat yet they will eagerly rip open a garbage bag of stuff. Danged ole' opportunistic scavengers. Seriously, you could take a pointer from sled dog mushers. Since huskies self-regulate and don't eat much at a time, they will monitor and raise the protein and fat to ensure the right amount of nutrition in the amount eaten. So, you might ease your concernse by judging the food she's eating.

Ricky eats 1 1/4 cups of Evo spread out 5
times a day and nothing else. He always
    finishes and hopes for more.

Louise is fed twice a day and eats about .7 cups of Innova Puppy/day + some Tripett and/or canned Wellness.   Sometimes she gets a bit of yogurt as well.   On some days she cleans the bowl, on some days she leaves a tiny bit and goes back to eat it later.   I did have problems getting her to eat when she was fed 3 times a day, but since switching to twice a day and adding the tripe, she's become a great eater.   Another thing that helped a lot is leaving her alone to eat.   I had been hovering over her and sometimes handfeeding because I was so worried about her eating, but since I started putting the bowl down and walking away she's been much better about it.

Romeo is 30 lbs he eats 1/2 lb of food divided in two meals.  The times that I have given him canned Innova, he will not eat more than 1 can although the label says 3/4 to 1 1/4  can for every 15 lbs, he just won't do it.  He will walk away, happily licking his lips.  He also has days that he won't eat, and this is one little guy who loves his food.  I know he will not go more than one day w/o eating.  I guess they are just like us, there are days that I want to eat everything I see an nibble all day long, days that I eat the way I should and those days that I can have the most scrumptious turtle cheesecake in front of me and I won't  even blink. (which is rare, you can poison me w/turtle cheesecake and I will die a happy woman.) [:)

    and nothing else.

Why on earth not Tess?[:o] Dont you ever add any healthy fresh foods for their health benefits and to mix things up for the little guy? Are you going to feed him nothing but dry kibble for the rest of his life?
Dont mean to come down on you,but i have never understood why people will only ever feed their dogs dry food and nothing else.I would be interested to hear your reasons for doing so.[sm=happy.gif]

Well Edie, Ricky has a very sensitive digestive track
and every time I feed him something other then his
kibble he either gets diarrhea or vomits.
Today I tried to give him a little plain yoghurt
and immediately his stool became irregular.

I think the kibble I'm feeding him is healthy
and it agrees with his system so I don't want
to rock the boat and mess with something
    that works.

My chinese crested is famous for quietly sneaking into the "dog porch" and up-ending herself into an open bag of dog food, if it was left out accidentally.  I know there's times that she's spent the greater part of a happy hour eatng her way to the bottom of the bag.  This is a ten pound dog!    [sm=eek.gif]  She won't eat much the next day when that happens, however.  most of the time she does nicely on around a quarter of what my other non-working dog eats, who weighs four times what she does.

I have am eighteen pound BC that can eat two cups of very high energy kibble, plus two to three pounds of rmbs, a can of mackeral or salmon, an egg, 4 oz of whole milk yogurt, and 4 oz of green tripe.  My main working dog Ben weighs 47 pounds and eats approximately the same amount of food.  The smaller dog is a calorie-burning inferno - I am very envious, let me tell you!  [8|]

I tried the Wellness canned puppy food - didn't get any reaction whatsoever.  Puppy would just sniff at the food, then look at me like "mommy, you expect me to eat this?"  And then he would walk away.  After an hour, it would still sit there, untouched.  I tried mixing it with yogurt and pumpking and put it in his Kong - but he ignored it after a few lickes.  So I threw the can out.  Yes, I admit, I've created a monster.

My Koda weighs in at 6.5lbs and eats about 1/2-3/4c of food a day.  He free feeds and there is pretty much always food in his bowl.  When we first got him, the vet was concerned about him being underweight so he was on a high cal. hospital diet for a bit.  Since he didn't seem too thrilled about the food, we spent some time searching for something he'd like.  He did really well on Chicken Soup, except for him having really bad breath.  We had him on Wellness kibble, a fish blend, but that obviously didn't do anything for his breath either.  He did enjoy it though.  He's been eating Innova Evo for a while and he ate a bit less on that, but now we're on Solid Gold and so far so good.  Some days he'll hardly eat anything, and then the next day he'll eat closer to a cup.  I'm able to monitor it, because I usually rescoop at night if he's finished up his night snack, or in the morning.  Throughout the day he'll grab a few kibbles and eat occassionally, but he'll tend to eat the most while we're eating dinner or a little later.  The only thing besides kibble that he gets is about a tsp of pumpkin and an occassional veggie and his bully sticks that don't seem to disappear.

She's been on that amt for 6 months and maintained her weight without loss. We had a overweight problem last yr and now have that undercontrol. Her diet also includes fruit and frozen green beans during the day.
Now that summer is here and her outside routine will consist of more excerise with swimmimg in the pool we will watch her weight close and adujst her kibble as needed.
