dog wont eat raw

How the heck is the homecooked that I give my dogs, based on a recipe from a CANINE NUTRITIONALIST be anything BUT nutritionally balanced

Sorry, Glenda; I know your recipe was approved by a nutritionist; I was speaking generally.

It's a rawhide shaped chew. My dogs don't get rawhide.

For humans, meat *is* healthier raw. Factory farmed meat is *not* what meat is supposed to be. The reason we "can't" eat raw meat is not because something is wrong with the meat. It's because of the contamination it gets at the slaughterhouse, and because of the atrocious way it's raised. It's pretty much disgusting, even after you cook it.

The same is true for milk. Any milk you buy in the grocery store has been pastuerized, which is a heat process that removes most of the good stuff. Then, they add vitamin d, so you can at least absorb a little of the calcium from the milk. Real milk, fresh from a cow, is quite different.

Jessiesmom, I have learned so much from your posts and your straight forward opinions that I always look forward to have you have to say. So I am sorry again.

I'm sorry too; I was too defensive in the way I worded my response; it's been a busy weekend and I was tired. I think the real problem lies with companies who make grain based kibble with lots of artificial preservatives but have slick commercials, such as Pedigree. Most people trust the commercials and don't read the ingredients. It does seem that if your neighbor says she wishes she could feed raw and has the time to make the diet but doesn't she may be too lazy to bother. I am sure you are feeding your dog a very healthy diet.

;Prepared foods have been researched and formulated to include all of the nutrients that are so necessary for a longer more healthy life.  "

so untrue. Read the research. It's shocking. Prepared foods have been formulated to keep 8 out of 10 dogs alive for six months. Most pet food research covers such topics as how to get the dogs to eat it, how to use really cheap protein sources like feathers and soybeans without killing the dogs outright, and how to make the dog's poop look good to the owner.

Anyone in this day and age who thinks a bag of super-processed preserved food contains everything an organism needs for lifelong optimal health is extremely naive.

kibble feeders could say the exact same thing except substitute the words "abag of super-processed preserved food"  with "raw meat".

Well, no, they really couldn't if they are speaking honestly and with any basis in research and intelligence.

We KNOW that processing destroys nutrients.  That's why many people think that FROZEN veggies are healthier than canned.  The canning process requires tremendous heat to seal the can....the freezing process on the other hand, requires blanching...which is a quick dip in boiling water to stop the enzyme action and then a soak in an ICE water bath to stop the cooking process and then everything is frozen FAST.  When I am processing the garden bounty I freeze whatever I can possibly freeze.  60-90 seconds in boiling water is FAR superior to 20 minutes in a hot water (boiling) bath makes a WORLD of difference with say asparagus.  Both in flavor AND in nutrients.  And 20 minutes sitting in the jar IN that hot water bath is what it takes to SEAL the jars....that or a pressure canner which is even HIGHER temps....and of course you can't put the hot jars in ice water, so the cooking process continues.  Blech!!

So what nutrients are actually LEFT in foods that are processed?  And especially processed as much as kibble has to be processed?  The honest answer is not many.  Which is why, when you READ the ingredient list you'll see a LOT of vitamins and stuff added back in.  But many of those vitamins and stuff aren't terribly stable and as we all know, getting vitamins and minerals straight from the food itself is healthier than taking a bunch of supplements.

so yeah, that bag of raw meat is a WHOLE lot healthier than that bag of processed and preserved kibble.

people could still honestly have that opinion after doing all the research.  everything stated here is based on opinions.  it is not fact that raw meat provides everything an organism needs for lifetime optimal health.
    • Gold Top Dog
It is NOT an opinion that cooking destroys nutrients.  It is FACT.

No raw meat isn't the only thing for an organism needs for lifetime optimal health. You have your grains, veggies, fruits, dairy and so on. But animals do need meat more than us humans. I am a raw feeder but I have nothing against people who feed kibble. I have been feeding raw for a longtime and was brought up feeding our animals raw.

Glenda - I would love to have the recipe for the home cooked that you use.  Right now I am pretty much winging it and doing kibble with a raw egg on it for morning and something like rice and veggies and cooked meat for dinner. I have been  reading all the posts about raw feeding and felt safest just starting out with the raw egg.  I also have a question about Olive Oil.  I have a friend who told me she put olive oil on her dogs kibble so I decided to put it on some for Jake ( he loves it).  I buy extra virgin olive oil , if that matters, is it OK to give him this?  I geuss I should have asked before hand, huh?[&o]  Thanks, Paula

    olive oil is fine
    • Bronze
Extra virgin olive oil is the best olive to use.

Do you feed grains?  In my homecooked I kind of hedge my bets by using 4 oz of brown rice in a 20 qt pot of food....some say dogs don't need grains, some say yeah they do...so I sit right on the fence on this one.

Paula, send me an EMAIL so that I can just send a copy without having to mess with stuff.  I'm down to "just" the laptop now so it's not easy to attach.  Be sure to include your email addy in the text.....I don't ask much, do I??

Now, understand that I DO charge for the recipe.  I ask everyone that I send it to to CONSIDER making a donation to the MS Walk for me.  In NDR the links to the National MS Society website and my MS page are under 2006 MS WALK.

I don't use supplements of any kind, other than egg shell powder to balance the calcium/phosperous ration.  Are you using the olive oil to help skin/coat?  I will sometimes add a bit of fish oil if the crews skin is looking flakey.....so, all that said, from what I've read, yes, Olive oil is fine, and especially the extra virgin.

I honestly don't believe that any of us *need* grains, or dairy. My dogs and I do not consume any dairy products. The dogs don't get any grains. I don't eat meat, and I'm working on reducing my grain intake. I eat no corn. Wheat is next to go. There are so many better things to eat, if you can get away from convenience.
