dog wont eat raw

[you are right, but i believe the dog food that is made without the use of chemicals is perfectly healthy.  its not all made with bad stuff.  and you dont HAVE to feed natural foods raw.  cooked meat is just as healthy.  of course if jake had his prefrence he would eat nothing but people food.

Jaye, you are perfectly right, not all of  it is made w/bad stuff, otherwise, I would not feed Innova to Romeo when I don't have food thawed out.  And I don't mind cooking some of the organ meat he will not eat raw.  However, I still believe that fresh meat and veggies whether cooked or raw are a million times better then processed kibble. At least for my dog it has been.

the only safe way to keep healthy teeth is to have them cleaned at the vet :/

And since that's typically done under anethesia it's certainly not safe. Can you start brushing his teeth?
    • Gold Top Dog
You could brush his teeth yourself if you feel that is safer than bones... its completely safe, and better than doing nothing.
    • Gold Top Dog
yeah ill try that thanks for the suggestion.

What nobody can convice me of is that a smelly processed kibble w/all kinds of chemicals added to it, so it can last in a bag for months at a time could be better than fresh ingredients? It is more convenient for us to believe it, because it takes all

Tell that to the Army. They've got MREs that are older than some people.

    That was a joke, BTW.

I respect your decision to fed raw and know that it takes time to make a properly balanced raw meal; please respect the decision of those who feed kibble and don't assume that we're just too lazy to prepare a cooked or raw meal. I have done a lot of research and honestly believe that it is difficult to feed a properly balanced cooked or raw meal and that many who home cook or feed raw may not be meeting the nutritional needs of their dogs despite their best efforts. I spent a lot of time chosing the kibble I feed my dog and I supplement it with home cooking but I rely on the kibble to ensure my dog is getting all the nutrients she needs.

Raw food feeders are zealous in that regard and there is no room for compromise in their minds. I simply want people to know there are other feeding options available.

Patt, I believe that on this forum those who feed raw are not zealots and are willing to consider the point of view of those who do not feed raw.

How the heck is the homecooked that I give my dogs, based on a recipe from a CANINE NUTRITIONALIST  be anything BUT nutritionally balanced?
    • Gold Top Dog
i dont believe it was aimed at you glenmar, she was speaking generally and said many, not all.

Uhhh, I'm sorry, but cooked food is not as healthy as raw food, in general. No matter what the food is, when it's alive, it has natural enzymes and fragile nutrients that are killed in the cooking process. I'm slowly moving away from cooked foods, for *myself* and I can tell you that the higher the percentage gets of raw foods, the better I feel. I can see a difference in my skin. My hair and nails are growing so fast, I can hardly keep up. My joints require fewer supplements. The dogs can't tell you the difference in how they feel, but I can.

BTW, Emma can't have a bone. She'll eat it, but she doesn't break things down well. The week before last, we spent all day in the vet's office, doing a barium series, and she came within minutes of getting knocked out to have a little peice of pork bone removed from her GI tract. Pork bones are soft, and the bone was raw, but it irritated her to the point that she couldn't hold anything down for over 4 days. I have no idea how I'm going to keep her teeth clean. Right now, they're beautifully clean. I suppose I'll start looking for toothpaste she can have. I did find some salmon skin "rawhide" shaped (knotted bone) chews on petfooddirect that I think I'm going to try for the girls.

certainly a lot of foods are healthier raw, but meat is undeniably not one of them (for people)  most vegetables and fruits are, although tomato is one at least that is healthier cooked,  some vegies arent even edible raw, artichoke for example.  in dogs, isnt it true that they cant even digest raw veggies?
    • Gold Top Dog
oh, ive also heard that rawhide is bad, i cant remember what the danger is.... choking?  is it safer than nylabone?

Patt, I respect your opinion and thank you for clarifiying your stance on the matter - but I don't see how it in any way justifies your original comment. Unless you were just trying to stir something up?

I completely agree. I'm scared to do homemade, although I do feed some premade raw medallions and some marrow bones. I haven't done the proper research, and even within the reading I've done there are so many different opinions that I'm not sure who to believe. I trust in the companies that have the resources to decide on what is complete and balanced and produce it. I also spend a great deal of time chosing kibble and I believe I'm doing the right thing for my dogs right now.

My apologies, I respect everyone in this forum because it is very clear that we all love our dogs and their well being is very important.  My comments were certainly not directed at anyone here, I was thinking of my neighbor who has the time because she does not work and wishes she could feed raw, but SHE will not  because she is too lazy and she certainly does not take the time to research kibble, she feeds ol'roy because is cheap (she has more money than she knows what to do with)

Jessiesmom, I have learned so much from your posts and your straight forward opinions that I always look forward to have you have to say.  So I am sorry again.

i didnt see anything wrong with patt's original comment?  it appeared to me she was briefly stating her opinion of feeding raw meat.
