Willow's diet

    Willow's diet

I'm just at a total loss about what to do about her.  She was doing so well on the Natural Balance fish and Evanger's canned.  But, after this recent severe flare up I just don't know if I should go back to it.

They can't say for sure what caused the issue.  I wish I knew.

They put her immediately back on i/d canned.  I made some boiled turkey breast to top if off.  I just don't know what to do.  Stay with i/d and make her fresh toppers or try the food again??

DH is soooo upset with me.  He thinks I'm ridiculous and wants her back on the prescription diet that she needs.

What do you guys think?  Try going back to her regular diet?  Or keep on the i/d?

I'd be sooo nervous. If the I/D is keeping her ok, for right now, I'd probably do that til I was sure she was stable. I know how long it took to to wean her off of the I/D, though.

I would keep her on the presctiption diet and if you know of some other safe  foods you could make--like the turkey or baked fish (microwave) add a little of it each day.  I would not risk messing her immune system up or causing other problems that could be avoided by staying on a diet that you know for sure works for her.

You know, maybe using that prescription diet is kinda like taking antibiotics.  You can be on antibiotics for some infection, go off them when you feel good and you may go days or even a couple of weeks, but the infection will flare back up.  perhaps she can be off the prescription for a while, but as with the antibiotics, going off will cause the problem to flare back up sooner or later.  Hubby is the worse in athe world about  not finishing a bottle of antibiotics once he feels good---and usually ends up back on them for a longer period.

But at any rate, i certain do wish you and your beaautiful girl all the best.

I would put her on canned i/d. The ingredients in that one seem much better than Hill's other prescription foods. Plus, with it being canned I'm sure it's easier on her digestive system.

Edited to add- I don't think I would even add toppers to her food. I would probably only feed her the i/d to keep it really simple. And if it were me, knowing all the problems she's had, I would stick to the i/d as long as it's working.

OK, i/d it is then.  I would love to only feed her that.  But, after awhile goes by she won't eat it plain.  She's done that before.  And, already today she's looking for other things, like what I was having.  Of course, she didn't get any but you can see she's starting to come back.

They did mention I could also cook a bland diet for her too.  But, it's so much easier daily to just add more meat to the i/d.  But, it looks like it will be just plain turkey breast for a loooong time, maybe forever.

I just hope it's enough nutrition for her.  [:(]
She's an active dog for her breed.  We do a lot and it's always go, go, go when I'm home.  It's only been a couple of days and already today she wants to walk.  I'm making her rest!

I was thinking about you and Willow as I was doing the dishes and wanted to come here and say "stick with the i/d" which I see you've already decided :)  You need to do what works for her.   Even tho a food may not look good on paper doesn't mean that its bad - if it works its GOOD !    I wouldn't worry about her not getting enough nutrition with the i/d - commercial foods tend to err on the side of too much rather than too little.   The i/d will cover whatever her requirements are and the added turkey won't hurt as long as its 1/3rd or less than the total she consumes (just remember to add calcium).

Thanks.  We are actually pretty fortunate the canned i/d isn't bad at all.  But, ugh, it's so nice to be able to go buy food whenever and not have to be a slave to the vet's office, etc.

    Lori---

I have not been around for a while, so I just caught up with Willow's saga on the other thread.  Nothing to add, but wanted you to know that I'm so glad Willow is feeling better.  You have been so in tune with Willow's needs, that I'm sure you will know if and when you can change her diet from i/d to something else. Well wishes for the both of you.

I'm so glad that she's feeling well enough to ask for your food! That's a GREAT sign, if you ask me[:D] Especially after a serious digestive upset. I hope she just keeps on getting better.

this was my problem with Louie...  Willow and Louie...what a pair.... It got to the point he would starve than eat the W/D

So far he is doing good on Raw... I steam it and leave the middle patties raw.....

Lori you know I have no advice....Iv been in your shoes and everyday I wonder what it will bring with Louie and his eating ordeal. So far lately things have been pretty good. But he has never got as sick as Willow...

The last time Louie got violently ill was when he had a Lepto shot and Lyme shot at the vets.... Its was HORRID and never again ever will we be doing any of those combo shots on my dogs....

That sounds like a good plan then. I think it's balanced nutrition; I wouldn't worry about that. Hopefully she won't get tired of the canned i/d and meats!

Lori, I agree with the others about sticking with the i/d. I'm so glad that she's feeling much better today.

Thank you!  I think it's pretty obvious her situation is much worse than most.  So, I think I'll be going back to the i/d.  And, she's doing well even now with boiled turkey breast on top.  I think that's going to be it for a long time.
I don't think she can handle another flare up like that.  I can't either.

You know, honestly, I'm as much of a food snob as the next person, but I keep a flat of the i/d on hand for Zippy if his tummy gets upset - it's the ONLY thing that will get him back on track.  I agree with the i/d plus add ins, but I wouldn't even add anything until she's good and stable.  [;)]  I'm so glad to hear she's doing better.  I think this is a case of doing what works for her.  I'm glad to hear she's eyeing your food though!
