Willow's diet

Can you rotate the i/d with other intestinal prescription diets? Eukanuba's low residue gets rave reports, and maybe you could add in a limited antigen diet (such as the natural balance) to the rotation too just to keep her interested for longer periods of time.

Ugh, I hate that we are now back on the dog food roller coaster.  She was doing fine on what she was getting.  It's been four years of this nonsense back and forth with food.

But, I'll check out the Eukanuba.  I don't know the ingredients but if it's got any type of chicken she can't have it.

I just wish I knew what caused this severe inflammation of her intestines so much so that she needed a narcotic for pain.  It's just so upsetting.  I'm still a wreck because I'm not convinced that she's completely better and that there isn't something else going on too.  And, also that it won't happen again.

Thanks everyone.  I just don't know what to think about any of this.

Lori, I'm right there with you. Food snob that I am, I'm about to put Teenie on a prescription diet. I don't *ever* want to see her in that much pain, again, and whatever it takes to accomplish that, I'm going to do. Hopefully, neither of them will ever have to deal with their ailments, again. I think it makes it harder not to know their histories. I know that with Teenie, it's like putting a puzzle together, or something. You just never know what it's going to be.

Our free dogs are mighty expensive, these days! LOL We should make a commercial or something. Dog: free. Vet bills: $800. Prescription diet: $45. Unconditional love: priceless!

AMEN to that jennie!  KayCee had one knee operated on at 16 months, the other 14 months later.  She has allergies to certain grass, fleas, pollen, but what we have spent on her isn't a drop in the bucket to the love she gives every day.

A month after we adopted Honey we were out over $400 for  heart worm treatment.  The love she gives every day, as tho she knows we saved her, is priceless.  She is here with me now.  Bless our dogs.

Good Luck Lori and Willow.  I agree with your decision to stick with the SD i/d.  Maybe if and when you decide to try another non prescription dog food, you could add extra probiotics.  Maybe that'll help.  I don't know...maybe you tried that already.

    Thank you all.  [:)]
I'm going to stick with i/d for awhile.  She was on it for 2 years, we had no issues.  She's been on regular food for a few months and this happened.  It might not be the food.  But, until I can narrow down what the heck happened last week I'm sticking with a bland diet for her.  And, so far she's eating well so that's working out too.

gosh i'm so sorry to hear about this. I have been there! it is not fun at all. luckily i haven't had to resort to the prescription diet although the vet has been wanting me to.

Just a thought, I know a couple of people that switched from the I/D to the SD Sensitive Stomach, and they said it worked just as well as the I/D did for them. I  also had real good luck with the SD SS, I had a dog that had diarrhea for over a week, home cooked for her with chicken and rice and tried some pumkin, nothing worked, I put her on the SD SS and she had solid stools within a day. Good Luck.

Abbys dad--Thank you, thank you!  She's not doing well on the i/d, having poop issues already so I'm searching for something to feed her.

I'm sorry to hear that. [:(] I wonder why, especially when it worked before. I would try canned Purina EN. The ingredients that I remember are beef, rice, and coconut oil.

They moved egg product up to #2 in the ingredient list.  She's not able to tolerate egg and chicken.  But, before when the egg product was much further down in the ingredient list I could get away with it--probably because it's formulated for GI issues.  But, not anymore.

I was at a loss of what to give her today.  She's only had a little turkey breast I made and some cottage cheese.  I'm completely lost.

    Lori,

I'm sure this has been covered before, and I just don't remember.......................

but why don't you just cook for her?

Granted it's a lot of work learning (such as I'm learning the recmmended amount of organ meat is too high, IMO), and granted it's extra time in the kitchen.........but,

I think like me, you just might not have any other good options.

I've tried homecooking for her.  She can't eat enough of a variety of things to get the nutrients she needs.  She's very limited between what her body can phsyically handle and her fussiness.  She also can't handle organ meat at all--diarrhea, cramping, pain.  Rice in any consistent amounts same thing.

She was doing really, really well on the NB Fish and my own toppings or Evanger's Hunk of Beef as a topper before all this happened.  And, I really want to go back to that.  But, the vet doesn't want her on kibble.  And, she can't eat the cans of the NB Fish because it's got pieces of potato and sweet potato and any type of pieces of sweet potato makes her sick--we've been thru it with Spot's Stew--before we know about the chicken and also Nature's Organic Turkey with the sweet potato and peas.
    I'm so frustrated.
