Which one of you still feed the canned food?

    Which one of you still feed the canned food, and which ones? I'm trying to switch to home cooking, but so far with very little progress, haven't found good recipies, etc, so for now my dogs are still on Truimph canned food.

      Irina, Menu Foods issued a new recall due to cross contamination and Triumph  has been recalled; [linkhttp://petfoodtracker.blogspot.com/2007/05/20-new-cat-food-brands-10-new-dog-food.html]http://petfoodtracker.blogspot.com/2007/05/20-new-cat-food-brands-10-new-dog-food.html[/link]

       Merrick makes their own canned food and so does Evanger's : [linkhttp://www.evangersdogfood.com/about/history.html]http://www.evangersdogfood.com/about/history.html[/link] ;

    " Mr. Evanger built our canning factory at his kennels. Almost 70 years later, we know that he was a man ahead of his time."

      I know Hill's isn't popular here but they test for melamine now;  [linkhttp://www.hillspet.com/Menu_Foods/VegetableProteins_05012007_en.htm]http://www.hillspet.com/Menu_Foods/VegetableProteins_05012007_en.htm[/link];

    "Please note that Hill#%92s tests the imported vegetable protein it receives for melamine. Additionally, Hill#%92s has eliminated wheat gluten from our product formulas and does not use vegetable protein (including rice protein concentrate) from suppliers in China."

    Only one variety of the Triumph dog food cans has been recalled and it is cuts and gravy style, not all of their canned products. It is recalled due to the possibility of cross contamination and they claim there is no wheat gluten of any kind in the food.

      Carol, California Natural may not be made at the same plant as the recalled foods. I hope someone will come along with a link ( I couldn't find it) but they have at least 2 plants and I thought the cuts and gravy style foods were only made at one of them?

    'm feeding Evangers canned. I was using Solid Gold, without problem.  But my local store brought in Evangers and it's hand canned in their factory -- which makes me feel a lot better.

    If you are worried about cross-contamination, Evanger's probably isn't 100% safe, either. They state right on their website that they will manufacture custom-label foods for other companies. [linkhttp://www.evangersdogfood.com/private/]Private Label[/link] There have been no recalls of any foods made at their plant that I know of, but I don't know which private label foods they manufacture.

    Personally, I weigh all my options and feel comfortable feeding Innova EVO canned to my cats. Natura seems to be a very reputable company that has good customer service and a good reputation so I trust them to choose quality ingredients and a manufacturer that they can trust.

    Thanks to everyone who reccommends Merrick and Evangers. I didnt know if there were any safe canned foods left!

    I quit feeding Canidae canned due to being manufactured by Menu foods for fear of cross contamination and switched to Chicken Soup....now their puppy and kitten formulas have been recalled due to American Nutrition adding rice protein concentrate "without their knowledge" [:@]  So there is no way I am feeding the cans I have, even if they are the adult formula & not the puppy...with all this cross contamination going on who knows what will be next.

    I am feeding Canidae Canned, on their website they assure that their foods are not made in the same plants that the recalls happened at.

    I also feel pretty safe feeding Nature's Variety canned.

    I got in some Zinpro wild Salmon canned...I don't know much about this company...it sounded good.   If anyone has any feed back on Zinpro please do share.

    I also just got in some Go Natural canned salmon (they just put out canned food).  I feel pretty safe with them as well.  I have my 2 older girls on canned/homeprepared only diet and our oldest is doing extremely well on this diet...her kidney values were a bit out of whack before X-mas, now they are in excellent shape.

    Cally, Go Natural is on the latest recall list. The list I'm looking at just lists brand names though - not specific batches. I'll try to find more info for you.

    I am feeding Nature's Variety and Solid Gold canned.  The statements on their website make me feel pretty comfortable that they are safe. I might also pick up a can or two of Canidae although I wish it came in the "small dog" size. [:o]

    doesn't Menu pack Nature's variety and Innova's canned foods? with this cross-contamination thing going on I'm not feeding any canned food.

    Cathy-- they are now recalling due to cross contamination, BE CAREFUL!! (see above) SOOOO SCARY

    I had just checked Natural Balance's website yesterday and so far, it doesn't list the duck & potato (canned or kibble).  Has anyone seen anything to contradict that?  The only reason I feed any canned is so I can mix in the meds Sassy needs.  I use about a couple spoonfuls in the AM & PM, but a can lasts about 4-5 days.  I guess I'm just trying to make myself feel better, but I'd stop using it completely if I thought there was a problem.

    As far as I can tell, Menu's South Dakota plant (where Natura products are made) is still unaffected.

    I'm still using canned EVO for the cats.

    I saw that they have added the Triumph has been added to the list, but it's only in Sliced Beef/Gravy 24x5.5oz Can , I was only feeding the big mashed cans, no slices of any kind, but i was switching to homecooking anyway, just used it while swiching so that the dogs won't get an upset stomack, was just adding alittle of their food to to the home cooked, yesterday i threw out the last can of chicken, rice and vegetables just to be on the safe site. From now on it's home made only. I realize that it would take me some time to get it well balanced, but it's better this than any cannes for now. I was advised by another thread in this forum to use [linkhttp://www.betterdogcare.com,]http://www.betterdogcare.com,[/link] which i'm very thankfulll for :). How many of you have used their servivce? I'm looking forward to using them, since I was unable to find any other Vet Nutritionist in New York area so far, so i think i'll just go with them.
