OK, come on guys....no bashing.  "In my opinion" really ought to preceed statements like that Bob.

    'Nuff said.

well in my opinion if your dog is doing good on it why change...if it ain't broke dont fix it....

I think snobby remarks about dogfood should be left off the table, considering the recalls that have been going on, and some higher end kibble was being recalled.[;)]

Deciding between those 2 brands of dogfood is like trying to decide which is healthier, Burger King or McDonalds.

Respectfully, there is a BIG difference between the ingredients of Pedigree and Eukanuba.

You know, this is a little off topic, but years ago i was taught that if you are only going to eat one food and one food only, a hamburger with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes comes close to being the perfect food for a one food only diet.   Not sure i would agree with that, but won't disagree either.

One thing for sure, i would opt for a kibble brand  that has not been recalled, and I don't think either of those two have.

Eukanuba is not a "bad" food at all, although I definitely would put Pedigree in that category.  Eukanuba is what I would consider to be a mid grade food - meaning much better than anything you would buy in the supermarket, although I do think it is expensive considering all the ingredients in it are very cheap to obtain (by products, corn etc...).  Thankfully there are many good foods out there to choose from, and some are quite affordable.  Many great suggestions have already been given so I really have nothing to add there.

    wait.

How are gizzards and livers inedible parts of a chicken?

My dog eats those almost daily (well...liver, that is. She used to eat gizzards) and bones, well, apparently you haven't been introduced to the raw feeders here.

WHAT? Chicken gizzards and livers not edible?  I agree with chewbecca 100%.  Cumb-bum-ola, i eat gizzards about once a week.  I fry up about half a pack for myself, give the rest raw to the dogs.  oI also love fried chicken gizzards, as does hubby.  Every time he leaves out on the road (cross country trucker) he takes a pile of fried chicken livers in his cooler.  And you can by chicken feet in the meat section at WalMart.  And I hve read repeatedly that the by procducts is actually the most nutricious part of the chicken/cow, etc.

EDITED  Just read your reply to chebecca.  The only raw my dogs do get is the chicken gizzards and sometimes i buy chicken hearts.  BUT they do get cooked calf liver, chicken livers, chicken gizzards in the chicken stew i make for them.  I am not much on raw feeding, but do give them those dibs and dabs of raw from time to time.  And I do think they actually prefer the cooked!

By products certainly are edible, and I'll agree with organs and such are a very healthy part of the diet. But...my opinion is that they are not a substitute for muscle meat and should make up a smaller portion of the diet.  The Eukanuba contains more by-product than muscle meat , and the Pedigree contains NO muscle meat!  One of the reasons why I do not recommend these foods.

But then they HAVE to add Chicken by-product.  By-product meaning bones, gizzards, liver, etcetera, all INEDIBLE parts of the chicken.

Do wild canids know you're not supposed to eat that stuff?[sm=crazy.gif] BTW: Liver and gizzards are chock full of vitamins, minerals and proteins.

I personally have no problems with some byproducts in there, but prefer muscle meat as a primary source of protein to byproducts.

How is your dog and what does your vet think? Personally, I would lean toward the Eukanuba if needing to choose between the two.

Sorry, I am not a fan of these brands nor any brands like them. I feed home-cooked for the most part, or else I use Merrick or Natural Balance.

Isn't Natural Balance on the recall list?

Oh, and then Ground Corn! We all know that is a filler, so why add that? Ground corn is not even whole corn. Corn is not digestible nor nutritious for dogs. It is a crap, cheap ingredient.

According to "Small Animal Clinical Nutrition", 4th Edition," corn is 91% digestible.   This immediately dispels the myth that corn is not digestible.   The story goes... look at how corn comes out when we eat corn on the cob (or some variation on the same crude story), so it can't be very digestible.   The reason an ingredient list for pet food says "ground corn" instead of just "corn" is because whole corn is finely ground before it is added to the food.   The outer layer of the corn kernel is impervious to stomach acid and grinding the corn is necessary to expose the very digestible inner part of the kernel to the digestive process.  The most basic research can attest to the high digestibility of ground corn.

I am not a fan of either brands, Pedigree because well the ingredients are less than crap, they are dirt, and

I think this is very rude, hurtful and insulting to someone who is doing the best they can for their dog and asking for help to make the best possible choice for their dog. This statement is just one person's opinion.

EvericBC: please do not take this kind of statement to heart and let it prevent you from asking questions.
