Eukanuba and Pedigree

    Eukanuba and Pedigree

I feed Jake a mix of Pedigree and Eukanuba but I've been hearing that Eukanuba is bad for dogs. Is this true?

Is Jake healthy.  If so what you are feeding him can't be too bad for him.

Actually in most circles Eukanuba is considered better quality than Pedigree.  I agree though, if he's looking great and feeling great than all's well.

A lot of people in my family (including myself) have fed or are still feeding Eukanuba and have had wonderful results with it. My dad's Dalmatian lived to 12 years old, my step-mom's golden lived to be 16 and my brother's 14 year old golden still hunts with him and they were all fed Euk the majority of their lives. My sister fed Euk Lg Breed Puppy to her Danes and when their hips were x-rayed they were perfect. Euk Low-Residue was a godsend for my Dal and I wish I hadn't made his colitis worse trying to find something "better". Euk has a bad rep becaus it's ingredients don't fit the "ideal" that some websites tout, plus it's made by a big corporation, and we all know big corporations are "evil", right?

It has more to do with Eukanuba being mostly grains and chicken by-product than being owned by P&G.

These are the top five ingredients in Pedigree dry adult formula for dogs:

    GROUND YELLOW CORN,
    CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL,
    MEAT AND BONE MEAL,
    CORN GLUTEN MEAL,
    ANIMAL FAT (PRESERVED WITH BHA/BHT),

Here are the top five for Eukanuba adult dry:

    Chicken
    Chicken by-product meal*
    Rice flour*
    Ground corn*
    Ground grain sorghum*

I'm not a big fan of either, but if I had to choose between the two, Eukanuba has much better ingredients. Meat listed as the first ingredient is important. This link might be helpful

Chicken as the first ingredient still includes a lot of water. Once it's gone through the cooking process, it's much further down the list. Your first real meat in the Eukanuba formula is chicken by-product meal (intestines, feet, etc).

I'd definitely lose the Pedigree, it's pretty bad. Eukanuba isn't awful, but it's not fantastic either. I fed it for a while (several years ago), and Cherokee definitely does better on other brands. If you want to learn about dog food, go to [linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com]www.dogfoodproject.com[/link]. Some foods to check out are Canidae, anything by Natura Pet, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, and many more. If you look around this forum, I'm sure you'll find a lot of great brands. [:)]

Eukanuba is a mid grade food and is MUCH, MUCH better quality than Pedigree. If you're looking for a high quality food that's affordable, here are two:

    Canidae

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul

I agree.  The commercials for Pedigree make is sound so "high class," doesn't it?  It's not.  If I had to choose between Eukanuba and Pedigree, I'd choose Eukanuba, although it is over priced for what it is.

Canidae can be found at a local feed store probably right down the street from you that you probably didn't know exsisted.  It runs at the highest $34 for a 40lb bag, usually less than that.

Chicken Soup is also a great food that runs about the same.

I totally agree with the line of thought that if your dog is healthy, active, gets great physicals, etc, then the food is working for it and there is no need to change.   A few here have said they wer convinced they should try "better foods" and the dog paid the pirce and they went back to the lesser food and all was well with their dog again.  I tried "better" for my one golden once and he threw up every meal for 4 days and i went back to his old food.  I have never used Euk nor Pedigree.  My sisters elderly beagle, Jazz, has been a Pedigree dog her entire life. has never been sick, only over weight from table scraps the kids fed her, but put on pedigree diet food (whatever it is called) lost the weight.

When Raja was on Pedrigree (from her old owners) She was doing good on it and the vet she looked great, but I switched to Canidea and at her next vet visit they said she looked even better and her coat and teeth looked better too. Also she used to have to get her anal glands done about every 2 weeks and now only about once every 2-3 months.

Shes currently on Chicken Soup though and does great on that too.

Canadae is about $29.00 for a 40 pound bag in Sacramento, and Chicken Soup runs between 27.00-32.00 for a 35 pound bag depending on where I go.

Deciding between those 2 brands of dogfood is like trying to decide which is healthier, Burger King or McDonalds.

As someone who has very healthy dogs that have been feed Eugenia all their lives I find this statement to be rather insulting!!!
