He too has food allergies (chicken, eggs, and turkey), the first time I gave him Benadryl was last August (he was a year old) when I gave him the end of my scrambled eggs and he broke out in hives within minutes. The vet told me to give him 1mg/lb (would have meant 4 tablets) but being a little a little anti-meds I gave him one and he slept for about 10 hrs. Making a long story short we had had some problems with him all along behavior wise, terrible ear infections, foot chewing and then in July he was so lethargic and didn't want to eat, etc. etc. Turns out he had these food allergies and was terrible uncomfortable. Fixed the food issues and he still had itching and breathing problems. Tried the Benadryl and it works for him still on a relatively low dose. Unfortunately he seems to have many environmental allergies so I keep trying to go Benadryl free and we have days sometimes a week or two without it and he's fine, but the general rule is to throw some one in with his kibble and add some via peanut butter as necessary. I truly hate medicating all the time but he is obviously more comfortable, he now thinks benadryl is a treat - I say you want some PB he goes to the draw where I keep it and once I get a blob on my finger and stick the benadryl in it he opens his mouth for me.
On light days he gets 2-3 tablets, the most I've given him is 6 tablets (RARE) I figure as young as he is I don't want it to be ineffective over the long run.
Please be aware that I am not an expert and others will say you need to give the 1-2mg/lb he doesn't need that so I don't give tham much
We are currently covered in pine pollen, I wipe him off each time he comes back in and the paper towel is green - YUCK
