Chi.Soup/Dog Lovers Soul better than Pro Plan?

I know this is a little different, by my youngest son goes 2-3 times a day and his wife goes once every 2ed to 3rd day.

I bet your son lives longer.  Three days is a long time for food to sit in the gut decomposing.  A lot of toxins can accumulate in that timeframe.

    Edited to correct spelling.

Never thought of it in that light.  I guess you could say his gut is a lot cleaner than hers!  Their little girl goes twice a day.  Aimee is always saying Maddie takes after her daddy!

Thats what I want!  I said 4 times a day, but some days it is 5 times!  I get tired of picking that up every day!  I wonder how long it will be until I see a difference...I am just mixing the food now and when that is gone I will go fully with Chi.Soup so maybe they will have to be on it fully to see a difference...at least I am in the right direction!  Thanks!

Fortunately that is not true, like I said before 2x/day to 2x/week is NORMAL for people. You do not "develop toxins". What comes out in a bowel movement is not toxic, it's not utilized by you, if the bacteria use it in your gut they can produce gas which also isn't toxic (although it may smell toxic). Let me tell you from experience also, people who get those colonics do not have cleaner colons then others. I operate on people with un-prepped (no golyely) colons all the time for various emergencies and there is NO difference.

i type- as a greyhound owner for many years I have to say that 4 times a day is PRETTY normal for my pups regardless of the brand of food they eat.  I volunteer at a greyhound rescue and most of these pups will go at least 3 times a day as well.

My guys do get "excited poop" and so even when they don't have to poop, their excitement on a really good walk or at the dog park makes them go again...and of course THESE poops are much softer and harder to pick up![;)]

not an expert but Bugsy goes 4x a day sometimes 5x - they are small firm poops now (relative to 95lb+ dog) he is SUPER active and has a fast metabolism - may not be a fair comparison but humans with fast metabolisms 'move' fast too. - JJsMom saying that greyhounds are known to be frequent poopers supports this theory in dogs
We've tried all sorts of food - addressed allergy issues and Bugs still goes 4-5x daily
I hate the pickup duty but he's happy and healthy and thats his cycle
Back in October he got sick and the vet gave him a barium capsule to ensure that he didn't have a block, when he xrayed him the following morning he was stunned at how much progress it had made - he said he'd never seen one go through a large dog so fast and joked that we must have to feed him a ton to keep weight on him (true!)
I personally think just like humans dogs vary
I sure wish he went 1x-2x a day!

As long as we have had our greyhound, she has been eating Pro Plan and going 4-5 times per day. What I think I will do is switch to a better food to see if it changes her habits...if not, then I know she is just a frequent pooper (I'd rather be a frequent flyer ! ha ha) and if she goes less, then I will know it was the food.  The Shih Tzu was a puppy mill dog, so she could care less what she eats as long as she is getting good food now...but switching may help her, too...this will be an interesting experiment!

There is no intestinal bacteria that produces a by-product that is not toxic in small amounts, but is toxic in larger amounts?

No, the toxicity from intestinal bacteria stems from them going places they don't belong like for example UTI's or sepsis. Frequency of bowel movements is not correlated with this. You run into problems when you have bowel habits outside what I listed before. Constipation can lead to stercoral ulcers which peforate and cause sepsis and kill you, diarrhea can cause significant electrolyte imbalances and dehydration that can cause arrythmias and kill you. When certain populations of bacteria take over (like C. Diff following abx) you run into trouble as well, but this has nothing to do with your bowel habits.

Wow. When Cherokee ate raw meat and veggies (no bones, eggshells for calcium), she pooped 4-5 times A WEEK! On kibble she usually poops twice a day. On homecooked she poops once. My sister's dog lives here now, and he goes 2-3 times a day. That drives me nuts. I feel like we might as well have 4 dogs with the amount of poop in the yard. If they both went 4-5 times a day? I think I'd shoot them. [:D]

I have to say I'm really shocked at the amount of times some of you are saying your dogs are going. Considering all the poop/food threads here.   I honestly didn't think that amount of times per day would be acceptable to you guys.

its not that I have an option of accepting it or not - NOTHING has reduced his frequency - I spoke to our vet who as I mentioned earlier was amazed at how fast the barium capsule went through such a large dog.  He doesn't poop a lot volume wise just often - as long as he's healthy its not something I am going to fret about

Just another thought too, since a lot of people have their dogs on supplements and medications that can significantly change bowel habits as well. Benadryl for example has anticholinergic side effects and can really constipate. A lot of supplements can cause diarrhea as well. There are lots of variables at play here I guess.

goodness gracioius Bugsy takes Benadryl daily as a supplement (tongue in cheek, he has ongoing environmental allergies) what would he be like without it??
    • Gold Top Dog
    Kpwlee,

How long has Bugsy been on Benydryl?  How many times a day do you give it?  My girl who has food allergies, also has pollen issues.  I know last year I kept thinking the flea meds were not working, but it wasn't fleas.  She was fine until last Friday and the biting sores on her inside thighs started again so I know it is enviornemental allergies, as well.  Last year, she was bad alllllllll spring, summer, and fall.   So, I have started giving a benydryl with her meals.  How long, seriously, do you give this to Bugsy?

By the way,. as an aside, my guys pooped alot as long as they were on kibble.  I started homecooking and still multiple poops until I added in a multi/vit supplement.  Now, I only get one poop a day.   I became convinced that they simple were not getting nutrients from the kibble b/c going by volume - it all got pooped out.  I am surprised now that one a day is now the norm - with an occasional second one, but not often.
