So what do we all feed now?

First, My heart goes out to anyone who's animals are affected by this recall.  We all are so upset and I really hope there's a lot of changes in the future. It's so sad to see that the world sometimes revolves around greed instead of love and care. Hopefully people all pull together and things will change.

So what do we feed now?  What companies can we trust ( why always lie to the consumer?)and how do we balance  homecooked diet so our animals do well and get the proper nutrition? I know I was lied to today by another company based out of Canada, point blank lied right to me. Sad sad sad.

Im going to contine feeding my pups what they have been eating all their life.  They are healthy, happy and in shape.  Why change?

I will continue to feed as I am now. Canidae for Lucy and Wellness Salmon dry with Innova EVO canned for the cats. None of those foods use the suspect wheat gluten or were produced in the plants that had the recalled food. All are very reputable companies.

The only change I would like to see is companies changing to ingredients produced in US or Canada, where regulations are stricter.

I will not boycott a food because it the company used Menu foods to manufacture it. I haven't been able to find a single dog food company that doesn't either contract their manufacting (like Natura or Wellness) OR use their own plant to make bargain foods for another company (like Evangers or Merrick). I'll try my best to choose a brand that monitors the manufacturer and chooses suppliers and ingredients carefully. In the end, it is the actual company that is responsible for overseeing how their foods are manufactured - whether they contract out or own their own company is less important.

I will continue to feed Sampson what he eats.  Dry kibble with canned food mixed.  I used to buy Nutro canned every once in a while but I won't be doing that anymore.
Atleast not for a while.  It's too soon for my comfort.  I am currently giving him Evangers canned or crockpot chicken.  We also use Merrick canned.

I will cook for mine.  Mine will eat the same food as I do. I will never buy dog food again.

I make their food. I quit trusting, a long time ago.

Last night, I was looking at all meat cans, to use for travelling, and ran across WIDE discrepancies. It's JUST meat and water. There's a HUGE difference in the kcal of one brand and another. Something is wrong with that.

That's simply due to the fat content of the cuts of meat they use. There's a huge difference between the breast meat and thigh meat from the exact same chicken. Beef can have even more variation. Game meats like pheasant and venison are naturally low in fat. They can also alter the kcal during the canning & cooking process by draining off fat.

Exactly what she has been eating since I got her. I trust Eagle Pack! I hope nothing happens to break that trust.    I buy some canned food to keep on hand to put on her kibble when I didn't have time to cook meat with veggies....but I will make sure I cook for a while and not buy any canned food,,,just until all of this is gone.
I know I won't take the time to figure out what exactly she needs...and balance her nutrients  for home cooking,,,so I will stick with Eagle!

I'm sticking with my Royal Canin made dry product and various good quality canned, some contract made by Menu, some not. It's a leap of faith to feed or eat anything - and that includes people food, it can get contaminated too. So you do what you can and pick reputable companies that use good ingredients and hope nobody screws up. [sm=2cents.gif]

They had a bit of a recall before.  I don't know how drastic it was or anything.

I have a feeling this recall is just going to get uglier and uglier and branch out in all sorts of directions.

I have a tendency to be a spazz though.

Three years ago I made all their food. I stopped when my kitchen was torn apart in a huge remodel project to make our 100 year old house handicap accessible. I found that incorporating the kibble gave me some flexibility, especially when kibbles came out that were compatible with Ben's allergies.

I'm going back to all home cooked. Probably raw supplemented with local grown cereals, though it depends on the source of the food. I used a modified Volhard approach before and I'll start there again.

I've found two suppliers of bulk meats already, in addition to farm direct, of course. I'll go back to the mill I used before to source whole grain meals. I've told mom to start saving kitchen scraps again. I'm still comparing prices. I just opened a bag of Bil-Jac so I've got about two weeks to get geared up.

Here's a GREAT site if you want to supplement your pets with locally grown meatshttp://www.eatwild.com/ - and of course farmers markets are terrific for local fresh produce. And it's a great way to bring safe foods to your human family's table, too!

__it happens. You'd be hard pressed to find a company without any skeletons in their closet. Also, their handling of a situation when it arises says loads about a company, and I've heard RC is one of the classiest.
