Terryl,
I applaud you for being willing to homecook for your furbabys.
I will say, however, it is not for the uninitiated. At least not in the beginning. I know b/c I have been learning about this for months since I have no choice with my guys.
You do have to add in calcium in order to balance the phospourus ratio - and I use the nutritiondata website for help. Some people add crushed, dried eggshells. I use NOW calcium citrate b/c it is very absorbable.
However, there is alot more to it than just that. Some people feed just raw, some cook, some add veggies, some add grains, etc. In leui of adding calcium for one of the meals, some feed bones - some feed only chicken or lamb or pork bones (no beef due to teeth breaking). Some grind the chicken bones up in a meat grinder. Some just add the calcium each meal. The other meal would be a tiny portion of organ ( a little liver, not much at a single serving b/c of too much Vit A ) and other foods. ETC.
You might want to join k9 nutrition at yahoo groups and sign up for the digest format and read the posts on there to help start learning. There are raw groups which buy products in bulk to help cut down costs. Of course, you could still cook the raw and make it homecooked if needed.
I have read several books, which I could recommend, but none were "just right" for me - so I take what I have learned, that can be useful, and modify it.
But, it's an ongoing learning process and I expect to be deep in education on this subject the remainder of this year.
