Need HELP with food... Internal Rash food intolerance

Kim, I hope like the others that the Natural Balance Venison works for Louie. Since he won't eat from his bowl, what about trying paper plates? It would be easier than having to clean the floor all the time.

Monty also has anal gland issues. He needs to have them emptied regularly. That's one of the reasons we puree peas and carrots, to bulk up his poops. It's working so far and it's been a while since he's had to go in for that. I feel bad for your dog having to have the surgery. Sometimes it must sure suck being a dog.

Iv done it all with Mattie and the infection has been on going for 2 months of green slime infection. Like you I did all the diet fibers etc...they have to come out. IM not looking forward to this at all..

Back to the food. If I missed it IM sorry but do you mind telling me the brand your feeding? Is it Natural balance?

I can tell Louie is hungry tonight so I tried the canned Venison with NO GO... tried some yogurt..NO GO... will see how tomorrow goes. He did it a 1/2 of can so at least he has something on his tummy.... Im trying not to stress about this as much since I made up my mind on the Venison. Im hoping it will work and when he eats it he will not get sick and then want to keep on eating....

Im glad he picked the can too "Tzu mom" :)

My Rhodesian Ridgeback was turned in to RR rescue because he had severe food "allergies"- problems. He had lost much of his coat when I adopted him. His previous owner had tried lots of special foods, like duck and potato, fish and rice, etc. My vet of 18 years is a genius. He checked Bentley over, reviewed his health records and said to feed him Science Diet Prescription Ultra ZD and to only give treats without wheat, beef, corn, leather, etc. He gets raw carrots for treats and has been eating the Ultra ZD for 7 years. His coat is gorgeous and he's done wonderfully on it. I don't know what is in it - I think it is mostly some kind of chemicals, and it is very expensive, but he is healthy, happy, and looks beautiful.

Just to throw some other options out for venison that Louie might like better:

Other canned venison products would be pinnacle - no, sorry, that's trout.    Ummm, Prairie has a venison canned. Wellness by Old Mother Hubberd.   Innova Evo makes a venison.  Blue Buffalo makes one.

Evangers sells "just" venison in a can - something you would need to add to - perhaps quinoa and low starchy veggies - so it would be "part" homecooking.

Petguard makes a bunch of varieties -- including a vegetarian one.  Now, normally, I would not suggest a veggie version, but this might help him get over the worst of it - and it shouldn't be too bad to use short term.   But, I didn't look at the ingredients, so it might have stuff you would want to avoid him becoming allergic to while waitiing for his stomach to heal.  Just a thought.

You know, the Natural Balance has brown rice.  Since my girl is terrible allergic to brown rice, I am mentioning this, just in case it might be an issue with Louie. Maybe it's not that he doesn't like the venison - there is a possiblity that it's the rice he doesn't like.

Also, what about trying Callies slippery elm cocktail to help soothe his stomach?????  Maybe if his stomach gets coated an hour or two before he eats, he then wouldn't hurt so bad and be more likely to eat?

    Chasza--

    Good point.
My IBD guy also has a terrible problem with rice--it irritates his insides something awful, but then again, he has a problem with grains in general.

    Prescription Ultra ZD

Im about to try this... Louie won't eat the Venison... I know he is hungry....Im about to go batty...
So Im headed out today to probably do this next....

I layed in bed lastnight and thought... He loves Royal Canin... the one the other dogs are eating.... If he loves it so much could it be agreeing with him???? I mean this is something he want's to eat....
What would be your guys thoughts on that???

It certainly can't hurt to try feeding the Royal Canin---if he's eating it, he may do well on it--just keep an eye on his stools and his general disposition.  I think it's important that he eat, so whatever he can enjoy and keep down is a plus.

Can I ask which RC formula he is eating?

You just kinda get to the point of wondering if he knows better than me .... I just got done making Callies tonic.... so will give that to him when it cools.

The RC Im feeding is the one with the Westie on the bad. Formula #30 My Westies LOVE IT.... never ever would they eat kibble dry without anything on it and they love this....

Im off to the vets to try the canned Z/D..... I will start there....

LORD HELP ME.... LOL Iv got him Im worried about and then my Westie girl having surgery to have her anal glands taken out tomorrow. Im more worried about her than any surgery my dogs have ever had.....
    • Gold Top Dog
You know, it makes you wonder that with everything he's been through, and all the different meds he's been on, if his body even knows whether it's coming or going.

You just kinda get to the point of wondering if he knows better than me

I think that sometimes, in our quest to find what is right for our little one, we actually can administer too many meds/remedies. I certainly was guilty of that.  At some point, I took a leap of faith, stopped all supplements (except fish oil and L-glutamine) and let his little body regain its homeostasis.

Good luck with Louie----and best wishes for your Westie girl's surgery tomorrow.
It's so weird, since Louie's problems are so similar to my Oscar's previous issues, I feel so personally vested in his recovery.  Keep us posted.

I thought Louie was allergic to chicken. Jessie's allergic to it and if she eats food with it she gets ear and foot infections. She will still eat it if given the chance, so I wouldn't rely on the fact that he likes RC. It has a reputation for being very palatable; brookcove calls it "doggy crack."  I hope he likes the Hill's diet. Hang in there Kim; I know things are hard right now with 2 dogs having serious issues but it shouldn't be long before Louie's feeling better now that you have some ideas of what to feed him, and your girl is going to be in very good hands for the surgery thanks to the fact that you took her to a specialist; you're an awesome dog mom. Jessies_mom---

Maybe you can answer this for me. I know that the Hill's z/d diets have hydrolyzed chicken and hydrolyzed chicken liver in them, so if a dog is allergic to chicken, would that still be a problem?  I guess my question would be how does the process of hydrolysis work?  I'm off to do some research, but you seem to have such extensive knowledge on this allergy subject, with all you've been through, so I thought I'd pick your brain first.   Thanks!

    Hi guys..

Back from picking up the Z/D.. WON"T TOUCH IT.... And I agree with the comment of so much coming and going but he really isn't eating enough of anyone to really how much coming and going. But I guess a little of this and that could be doing it.

The specialist I took him too is the one that put him on Pred to get this turned around with all the irritation that is going on inside him. I went throu this with my Scottie with the exception that he LOVES TO EAT :)

here is the Science diet link

As for what Louie is allergic to... NOBODY KNOWS.... all my specialist said was with biposies of his lower and upper GI tract that was taken the
report said it was allergy related
and to what??? Nobody knows...but they start with the protein first.

So now that IM completely crossed eyed and upset about him not wanting to eat and act so sickly..... I just want to scream or cry... can't figure out which.

Im still reading all your post and learning and thinking as I go....

terrierlover, I am not recommending you do this but I have to agree with tzu_mom that we can administer too many meds. I ended up stopping all meds for Monty. Some of the side effects of the meds made him worse. Some made him not have an appetite, others made him feel nauseus, etc., one made him throw up in the a.m. I did consult with my vet first who ultimately said okay, go ahead. Once I stopped everything and before I switched to NB, I made "smooshy" food: rice, potatoes, yogurt, veggies, peanut butter, egg whites, anything he could eat. I stopped all meds on a Monday night. Tuesday morning he had some energy and actually ate. Not a whole bowl but enough to satisfy me things were going to be okay. Sometimes I ate some which made him want it more. Once the smooshy food was going okay I then worked in the NB kibble.

I apologize if you wrote something about this somewhere. I'm at work and didn't have a ton of time to reread all the posts.
