Need HELP with food... Internal Rash food intolerance

I just got the test results back on my Westie Louie. I posted on him having Tummy troubles on another tab and got alot of responses on home remedies and things to do.

I decided to take him to a speciality clinic to see an internist and have him scoped at both ends. The results came in and I don't have the paper work to give you all the correct words.

Louie's insides are a complete RASH.... from his diet....he wants me to get a novel protein that he hasn't been exposed too. Plus I have to put him on Pred for 2 months just like I did Max my Scottie when he was diagnosed with IBD.  I told him what I was feeding now the Royal Canin and he said its chicken..Nope no matter what get him off that and he said..."Duck .. Poultry they are all the same in his book ....

This is what has been causing Louie gas... direahea...and cramping  No wonder he didn't want to eat and this has been going on for years. But has gotten worse over time and he has been on NB Duck and Potato.................. I guess if you look at Alley my Scottie with horrible skin issues she shows everything on the outside... And Louies allergies are all on the inside...

He suggest I feed Fish and Potato since most dogs aren't exposed to fish and potato. Im going to do a bit more research... possibly Kangeroo....

Im hoping that someone may have a good food suggestion... Im thinking I may go with Royal Canin ... they make a fish and potato... And I was going to look into Solid Gold...
Im also wanting to know peoples thought on Pro Plan... I did buy a bag of Salmon and Potato. I haven't decided yet how IM going to try this..... Its going to be hard I think to get him to eat something fishy.

I have to expose him to a protein that he hasn't been exposed too. But its tricky... it can be a grain or one of many things but this is were he wants me to start...

IM READY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS and suggestions... or anyone's dog that has gone through this...

    thanks
    Kim

If  you guys think I should post this on the nutrition site for suggestions let me know.
Since this is an allergy issue I thought I would start here for now..

    thanks
    Kim

Oh, my goodness--poor Louie--he sure has had a rough go of it.

Personally, I would not feed kibble at all.  It's so much harder to break down--harder on the G-I tract for a dog with tummy issues.  (I know I mentioned before, my IBD dog cannot eat anything with a hard texture, i.e. kibble or biscuit treats, they just plain irritated his G-I tract---it actually "hurt" to eat.)

I would go with California Natural Canned Salmon and Sweet Potato---very simple formula (salmon & herring are the fish protiens, and sweet potato is the only carb).  It should be very easy on the tummy and easy to digest.

Natural Balance has a nice Fish and Sweet Potato (whitefish and salmon are the fish proteins, but it does have 2 carb sources--potato and sweet potato.)

Well, I've had great results with the NB Sweet Potato and Fish.  I'd recommend that to anyone based on how it's worked for Willow.

The other thing I wanted to mention was that all poultry does not necessarily cause the same reaction.  Willow cannot have chicken or she ends up with cramping, diarrhea, etc.  But, she does fine with turkey.  I just wanted to throw that out for you too.

And the STUPID holistic vet use to tell me.. JUST PICK UP HIS BOWL and he will learn to eat when he gets hungry enough....GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR IM SO glad I gave her up this past summer............ TALK about bad advice....And Im glad IM not an owner that would be stupid enough to take it....

Frustrating, isn't it?  That's what my former vet used to say as well.  Unlike you, my holistic vet was the person who suggested all other alternatives and pointed out the the hard kibble just made it "hurt" to eat.  That's why I shudder when I hear people speak of "tough love" when their pet does not want to eat--sometimes there is a physical reason for it.  I just thank my lucky stars that I wasn't willing to go that route---soft food and grain free was definitely the way to go for us in straightening out his troubles.  I should also mention that grains cause an inflammatory response in the GIT, so eliminating them will help.  My dog had a problem with white potato, as well, but no problem with sweet potato.

Again, best of luck--Louie is lucky to have you.

I used to have a lot of trouble getting Willow to eat too---we just didn't know what was going on, she hid most of her symptoms so well.  I'm a firm believer in if they aren't eating for awhile they know that the food makes them feel bad.

I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question but since he has been on NB Duck and Potato I was thinking of getting away from that brand all together.....

    Your thoughts...

Hey I appreciate everyones input SO VERY MUCH!! I want you all to know that... :)

    Ditto on the SHUDDER.....

Dog are alot smarter than us... I knew there had to be a reason he wasn't eating and wanted to lick the cabinets and the icemaker and keep circling his bowl. I just wish I would have gotten on this sooner :(

Not a dumb question---I wouldn't necessarily stay away from the brand, BUT, since he has had exposure to white potato, you want to rule that out--you want to go with a novel protein and carb----I would more likely go with the California Natural Salmon/Sweet Potato-----sweet potato is highly digestible and easy on the tummy, as is the fish---it's also the simplest formula of the two, which would be better for a sensitive tummy  Another option would be to home cook for him, although, you seem to have your hands full, already.  I'll keep digging to see if I can come up with more options for you.

Don't be too hard on yourself, it sounds like you were trying to help him and got some bad advice. You kept at it and figured it out!!! I'm sure he's greatful :) With intestinal inflammation, increasing the fiber content helps too whether it's IBD or a bad food allergy. You may think about a brand with a little higher fiber, or add some pumpkin. Keeps things moving and keeps the stool from being too hard if you keep lots of water available.

Reading your story also reinforces an important lesson, regardless of what type of vet/doctor you go to, if things aren't getting better or don't seem to jive, time to look for help elsewhere just as you did.

Im struggling here.... Louie detest fish.... I had to hand feed him and he wasn't liking it one bit... I gave him the canned Wellness... fish and sweet potato....Im exhausted trying to making all the right decisions here.... I went to a place today that carries nothing but the BEST of the BEST in dogs foods. I even got some sample kibble. Im still thinking of Royal Canin Fish and potato but my vet has to order that in.

This is so hard when you have a dog that doesn't want to eat and then hates the fish.
He was eating pretty darn good on Royal Canin #30 which is Chicken base... but he can't have that.... Im going COLD turkey here getting him on Fish cause that is the way you have to do it when you find out its a food irritant....

Off to see a movie... I need a mental break from all of this.....

I believe that Royal Canin has a venison based diet as well.  That may be an option if Louie refuses the fish.
    • Gold Top Dog
Natural Balance also has a Venison and Brown Rice formula. Works great and my dog loves it. Also had allergies and irritated stomach for so long and I was told, "don't worry, dogs won't starve themselves. Just keep picking the bowl up." I know how you feel terrierlover. I felt so guilty. Now my cocker Monty eats great and looks forward to it. I was just saying to my husband that based on how Monty is excited for food today, he must have really felt awful when he wasn't eating. Just keep trying things.

I agree with Bevolasvegas--IVD diets are nice--if Louie does not like fish try the venison/potato or rabbit/potato.

Nature's Variety has a canned venison and a canned rabbit as well.

The only reason I would stay away from the Wellness canned is the addition of barley--a high gluten grain which can excacerbate intestinal issues.

This is why I come to this site cause you guys are all so informative...

I can tell you this fish diet isn't going to work around here.. .Im so stressed and Louie is starved so I gave him the kibble he loves which I bought a week ago and its Royal Canin formula #30 till I can get out tomorrow and get him Lamb...I guess that is the route I will go next.... Its been years since I fed Venison... Here is my other dilemia
Being diverse can be a bad thing when something happens like this has to Louie. I use to be diverse and do all of Natures Variety and never understood when my vet said its bad when expose them so much as you can be allergic... Well that is the boat IM in and then you have hardly any food choices when something like this happens :( I can't do Rabbit.. I can't do Duck... now I can't do Chicken...  Its been YEARS since I did lamb....so Im thinking I need to go that route. Iv done Venison in Solid Golid years ago before doing Raw for 3 years with my dogs. I did go to a place that only sells the best of the best in dog food. And they had kibble samples.. NO GO WITH HIM... I just don't feel he is going to tolerate fish so Im not going to push it....
Im beyond insane here..... Am I beyond help here...LOL Im trying to laugh alittle cause I feel Im going insane...
