When I was a kid, I had a yellow Lab named Gumbo. When we first got her, my dad bought Gravy Train, and even though I was young, I knew WHY they called it Gravy Train judging by her poop. lol

I've seen worse, sadly. Atleast that one has beef as the first ingredient. Just look at Kibbles n Bits:

Corn, soybean meal, ground wheat flour, beef & bone meal, animal fat (BHA used as preservatives), corn syrup, wheat middlings, water sufficient for processing, animal digest (source of chicken flavor), propylene glycol, salt, hydrochloric acid, potassium chloride, caramel color, sorbic acid (used as a preservative), sodium carbonate, choline chloride, minerals (ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), vitamins (vitamin E supplement, niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement), calcium sulfate, titanium dioxide, yellow 5, red 40, yellow 6, BHA (used as a preservative), dl-methionine.

[:'(] *gag* I can't believe some people feed there dogs this every single day as their daily meal.

What happened to Ol' Roy being the worst dog food?

I don't have time to find the ingredients... anyone care to list them?

RE: Kibbles and Bits, propylene glycol as in antifreeze? THAT IS SCARY!

I just talked some close friends into Canidae over Kand B. They are so sweet and love their dogs, but first time dog owners and really did not know!

I can't seem to find the ingredients for dry Ol' Roy, but I did find ingredients for one of their canned formulas.

Ol' Roy Hearty Cuts in Gravy with Chicken:

Water, Chicken, Poultry, Wheat Gluten, Meat Byproducts, Whole Wheat Flour, Salt, Guar Gum, Onion Powder, Carrageenan.

Disguisting, isn't it? Even worse, here's what Wal'Mart's website has to say about Ol' Roy:

I think all these brands are pretty horrible.
I once did a search on Ol Roy too, to see the ingredients.. I couldn't find it listed anywhere on the interenet. So I went to walmart to check for myself.

They have a bunch of different kinds, but I found that most of them have quite similar ingredients to Kibbles N Bits. Nasty. I did find one, however, that had some sort of "protein"  as the second ingredient (next to corn, of course).

I've never looked at the Old Roy bags - that's just wrong.  I did, however, grab a bag of Kibbles & Bits while at the grocery store with DH - just to look at the ingredients.  We completely embarassed ourselves and are lucky we didn't get thrown out of the store.  We stood their in the isle, bag o'crap in hand and read the ingredients out loud - all the while describing every ingredient in it, out loud, with numerous shoppers in the isle with us.  Note, most of these shoppers fed grocery store kibble like Kibbles & Bits.  DH & I commented to each other about how nasty particular ingredients were, pointed out the known carcinogens, had a lengthy discussion about the lack of any decent ingredients and balked at the fact that so many people feed it.  Then, we looked at the price and couldn't believe that people paid what they did for it.  We commented, quite loudly, that anyone who buys this must not read the ingredient list.  Horrible - I honestly don't know how it's legal to sell that stuff.

    Ol' Roy - Premium
Ground yellow corn, meat and bone meal, ground whole wheat, soybean meal, wheat middlings, animal fat (preserved with BHA and citric acid), chicken by-product meal, rice, animal digest, salt, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, choline chloride, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, vitamin E supplement, niacin, copper sulafate, manganous oxide, vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, menadione sodium bisulfite (complex source of vitamin K), calcium iodate, vitamin D3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, cobalt carbonate, folic acid, sodium selenite

I forgot where I found them but I made myself a HUGE comparison chart and it includes the regular adult Ol' Roy which is premium. >^_^<

EDIT: Here's another really horrible one that my family was feeding my dog when she was in their care.... >O\/o<

    Purina Kibbles and Chunks
Ground yellow corn, ground wheat, soybean meal, beef and bone meal, corn gluten meal, beef tallow preserved with BHA and mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), sugar, water, sorbitol, animal digest, salt, phosphoric acid, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, DL-Methionine, glyceryl monostearate, zinc sulfate, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), ferrous sulfate, added color (Red 40, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Blue 2), niacin, manganese sulfate, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

Disgusting... >X.x;<  That's the last time I leave an animal in their care.

It is legal to sell it just like it is legal to sell twinkies whose filling is all lard.  LOL!  The difference is we don't eat twinkies as our only food.  I think that is the really sad part about the dog food.  I think it should be regulated like baby formula, our dogs don't have a choice and neither do the dogs.

Still can't believe the first one has ethoxyquin as an ingredient. Makes menadione look like a health food.

This is just the thread I needed today. I spent about an hour yesterday re-calculating how much raw chicken to feed my dogs, as if they were going to die from some imbalance if they had an extra couple of ounces. (Figuring it isn't hard, cutting chicken to meet my specs...that's hard.)

It's good to be reminded how many poor dogs survive on such crap diets. I'm apalled by it but it was a good reminder for me today.

Does anyone remember Gaines Burgers? (looked like raw burger wrapped in celophane- I'm showing my age here).  My grandmother used to feed them to her chi/terrier.  Wonder what was in those...
    • Gold Top Dog
I remember Gaines Burgers. In fact I didn't know they weren't around any more. I'll bet they were similar to moist and meaty becauese if you smoosh a bunch of moist & meaty together it makes a Gaines Burger (in looks at least).

I had the idea early on that I should find a tasty dog food to use as a puppy treat, so they'd be eating better food than their former treats. I bought Moist & Meaty which was the perfect size, shape, texture for the pups. Then I read the ingredients. UGH! That's when we switched to chicken baby food for the young pup treats.
