The worst dog food ever?

I remember Gaines Burgers!  [:D]   I thought they looked good, but I was just a kid then.

I had a doctor appointment today and my doctor and I got into a lengthy discussion about dog food and 4D meats.  He couldn't believe it.  He was sure that there'd be some regulation against that.  He was interested, but skeptical.

RE: Kibbles and Bits, propylene glycol as in antifreeze? THAT IS SCARY!

Propylene glycol is in Dr. Pepper.

    ETHELYNE glycol is antifreeze.

Close, but not the same chemical. Not that Dr. Pepper is a health food![8|]

My favorite is when people judge how good a food is by whether the dog eats it. Sally likes to eat cat crap and horse manure--does that mean that's what I should feed her?

I think I've really lucked out with her though--I hear lots of people say how picky their dog is. Sally is the "Antipicky" - if it is in her bowl, she eats it.

Ok, be mad at me all you want, but Beau was fed Ol' Roy for 2 years. Yes, two years. He was the most healthy looking dog, his coat was perfect, his appetite was great, and his poops numerous.

So maybe that's why people think Ol' Roy is good food. I had absolutely no clue about other good dog food until I came here. I was in Walmart the other day, and an old couple had a bag of Pedigree in their cart. My thoughts were... Those people look wealthy enough to feed the greatest food on the planet, they must not know that food is disgusting. I don't care to educate people in stores, it's pretty much a waste of time, and my fiance gives me a weird look when I say anything about I-dog in public. But I understand, to a point, when people are uneducated about food.

It's not their fault, unless they are shown the ingredients, and scientific evidence, and choose not to feed better food.

Currently my pooches are eating Diamond (I know... no need to scold) Lamb & Rice. Supplemented ( a lot ) with raw. I'd say almost everyday.

Now how do you get the word out about the bad foods?!

Gaines Burgers are still around in some areas. A woman on a different forum was asking about whether they were good to feed her puppy.

We used to feed them to our Sheltie when I was a kid.[8|]

I never tell anyone how much Sally's food costs, or that I can only buy it at one store round her unless they ask and are animal people. The people I work with already think I'm a dog freak, emphasis on "freak."

I found out about "good" foods from my friend who started working at a pet supply store and at the same time adopted a cat that was very hard to feed and keep in good condition. This caused my friend to do lots of food research and she is very willing to share. Sally started on Purina One and now is on Nature's Variety kibble--venison.

Now how do you get the word out about the bad foods?!

I tell people what I'm feeding Roscoe and about all the great foods we can get around here whenever they comment on how shiny, soft, non-stinky, etc. he is.  I say something like, "Thank you, it's probably because of the diet he gets." Then they ask, and I get to go into my spiel.

Also, if I am in a group of people or overhear someone at the dog park and they're talking about a health, coat, or poop issue with their dog, I will ask what food they feed.  If it's something like Pedigree or Purina, which it usually is, I will go into my spiel then.

It's slow-going, but we did manage to get one person to switch from Pedigree to Innova this way, and he is really happy with it.

    ...animal digest...

    What is that?
    • Gold Top Dog
Do you really want to know?

"Animal digest is a material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed. If it bears a name descriptive of its kind or flavor(s), it must correspond thereto.

Animal digest is a cooked-down broth made from unspecified parts of unspecified animals. Any kind of animal can be included: goats, pigs, horses, rats, etc. The animals can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Natura uses only human grade, single-source meats. You will never find Animal Digest in any of our products."

    and his poops numerous.

THAT is a problem.  If a dog is really processing their food they should NOT have numerous poops.  The more that comes out, the less that is being utilized inside.  Might as well go out in your yard and toss dollar bills on the ground. :)

I really don't bother trying to educate the general public.  If they WANT to learn, they find a way.

Unfortunately, most people assume that what they see on TV is true. I was a real numbnutz that way for a long time. My dear 9 year old Lucy died last week. She'd eaten one of the more popular brands of road kill for most of her life until I wised up a couple of years ago. In her case, the damage done was irreversible. She got cancer, there was nothing we could do to save her. When I see people bragging about feeding their dogs these foods, I'd really like to shake them up and wake them up. What I've learned is that you can't people anything unless they're willing to be open-minded. Television has incredible power over people..

I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy.  This must be a hard time for you.  My thoughts are with you.
