timberwolf organics and orijen are my top 2 favorite dog foods.

i used to use natural balance but i dont like that its chicken as the first ingredient and then a grain, and not chicken meal. which means the first ingredient relaly should be the grain and not the chicken since the chicken will lose most of its weight after cooking. i also dont like that it has salt kind of high up in the ingredient list. not a bad food by any means! but im very nit picky on my dog foods :)

I agree[:D] Although I haven't had the good fortune of trying the Orijen, I love there commitment and the ingredients. I am unable to try it at this point because of the chix/turkey base they use. I am in touch with them and they will be comming out with a lamb formula very soon. That being said. Timberwolf we use and absolutely love, those two foods would be our picks[:)]

The only one on the list I would use there is Prairie.  ALthough currently I'm using solid gold barking at the moon.  I don't know if I'll keep them on that or not. Still toying with the idea of cooking for them again- you just can't beat the nice breath and tiny poops that crumble and dont' stink like dog poo.

But that's getting off the topic.

They did ok on calif. natural (still finishing/mixing with solid gold) but they were Farty!! on it lol

I do NOT like wellness. Although it looks great on paper, the poop volume is insane and it produces a urine pH of 7.2-7.4 and caused UTIs in my bichons both times I tried the food.

All those foods look great on paper but you have to judge how the dog does on it to come to a final conclusion of which food is best.
And if I had to choose a 'best' food, it would be a homecooked recipe.

I agree, wholeheartedly. The best diet is one of fresh, whole foods. I've used most of the foods listed, on one dog or another, but nobody has done as well as when they're on a fresh diet (I have been feeding mostly raw for a while, now. Before that, I fed homecooked for quite some time).

    FOR MY DOGS:

    1. NV Raw Medallions
    2. Eagle Pack

Otto is quite fond of Innova EVO we've transitioned to that. I've also just started adding a little raw from Dr. Pitcairn's book (the meat kibble topper) over the last week :)

I'm surprised you didn't include Innova on there...

It depends on the dog.  What I mean is...I don't think dog chow should be anyone's "does best on" dog food.  But some dogs do great on Royal Canin, which in my opinion is still a good food, but is does contain corn and glutens and in some formulas, wheat.

Remember a couple months back someone posted a "Rate Your Dog Food" questionaire.  It was undoubtedly pro high protien / no carb diets.  Really the only food that could rate 100% or whatever the top ranking was, was Innova Evo.

While Innova Evo works wonders for some dogs, it doesn't work well for all.  After all, it is a very extreme diet.  I've worked the pet store curcuit for a long time.  At least once a week I hear someone tell me that they were feeding Innova Evo and have to switch to something else because of ____ problem, usually pooh issues and anal gland issues.

Honestly, I think I like Eagle Pack the best as far as company quality goes. I'm not a big fan of "all life stage" foods, because the average pet owner doesn't put enough effort into excercise and controlling weight to feed their dog a puppy food. All life stage food is puppy food, and its too high in calories for the average person to feed their dog. I much prefer idiot proof formulas for the general public.

You should choose the food based on what YOUR dog needs. If you need a food for allergies, Natural Balance is the way to go. Large breed dog... don't touch a food that doesn't have the calcium and fat in the appropriate ranges. Every dog is different, every dog needs their own food.

I did a lot of researching dog foods prior to recently adopting greyhounds again. Of your list the only ones I have tried are NV, NB and Canidae and I liked all three but JJ didn#%92t do well on any of them (allergy OR poop wise). After several additional foods that are not on your list I finally found Timberwolf Organics and the bison formula has been the only food that we have been truly pleased with. There are no allergy problems and good output.

While I am not the best person to help you with your list the 3 I HAVE tried on it I would recommend despite them not working for my pups.

Agree, my dogs do much better on the Royal Canin and Sensible Choice than they did on any of the ones on the list, the best dog food is the food your dog does best on.

I totally agree, I see people recommending ALS foods all the time for large breed puppies, and unless the owners are very diligent, they could be heading for trouble.

I use Wal-Mart brand. The collie we had lived 12 years on scraps and store brand foods. He was in great shape until the week before he died.

I love Natural Balance Fish for my girl with allergies. That, along with the other things I have done for her, has made her a healthy, happy dog. I give fresh food also.

    Pardon me, but VOMIT. [:D]

12 is quite average for a collie. I wouldn't brag much about that.

He was in great shape until the week before he died.

So he just randomly..dropped dead? This is what my Mom always says about Science Diet. "All my dog were perfectly healthy before they died.." OF CANCER! Humph.

    Sorry, I'm feeling a bit..feisty tonight. [8D]
