Cherokee ate a bowl of fat

So I just ran out for a few minutes, and my sister called me to tell me that Cherokee had ripped up the trash, in which she (my sister) had dumped a bowl of beef and bacon fat in this morning. So Cherokee ate a pretty large bowl of pure fat, I would guess a pound or more. This is the part when I guess I should be freaking out and running her to the vet, but since she's so used to tons of different foods, and seems to have a pretty solid stomach, plus eats a pretty high fat homemade diet, I'm not that worried. Should I be? She's fine at the moment, but I'm guessing pancreatitis or anything wouldn't be immediate. Should I pour peroxide or something down her throat to make her throw up? She ate it 30 minutes to an hour ago, but I don't know how quickly anything would be out of her stomach. Is it too late to make her throw it up? I don't want to traumatize her for no reason. Whattaya think? Thanks.

You don't have a vet you can call and ask?

Well, we don't have a regular vet at the moment, because I don't like or trust any we've been to, and I feel like one who doesn't know anything about Cherokee is just going to tell me to bring her in, without considering the fact that this isn't a kibble-fed dog. If Cherokee was fed kibble and only kibble, I would be rushing her to the vet right now. But since she eats lots of different foods, and a lot of fat, I don't feel like it's necessary, but wanted to make sure everyone on here doesn't think I'm psychotic for not. [:D]

If it were Emma, I'd induce vomiting, maybe feed her some activated charcoal (available at health food stores), and fast her for a day. She's got a sensitive GI tract, and too much fat (though she eats a high fat diet) HURTS her. Pig's ears and things like that make her feel BAD.

If it were Teenie, I'd probably induce vomiting and tell her to stop being so stupid.

My dogs are MUCH smaller than Cherokee, though. A pound of anything is WAY too much for Teenie. If I had a large, healthy dog, I might or might not induce vomiting. I'd probably just fast her and watch for signs of ickiness.

The Vet surgeon on Animal Planet's E Vet show spoke last night about having to do surgery on dogs that eat Pigs Ears,,,,

Yuck. I don't feed them any more, for thousands of reasons, but the last one she had really did make her feel bad. I found it while I was cleaning out my car, and tossed it to her, to amuse her on her tieout (which she's only on while I clean my car[;)]). She barfed for two days, and had a bad tummyache.

Loveukaykay lost a dog to pancreatitis after it had eaten some fat left from roasting pork ribs on a grill. I'd definitely recommend calling a vet and asking if you should induce vomitting.

LOL! Seriously.. Why do dogs have to rip up trash (or a better question, why do people pour a pound of grease into a trashcan in the middle of the kitchen?? [:@])?

Well thanks for scaring me! Just kidding. [;)

I think at this point, 4 1/2 hours later, it's a little late for vomiting to do any good. I maybe should have induced vomiting as soon as I got home, but I didn't. She still seems fine, a little full maybe, but not sick or anything, but I'm still watching her closely just in case. She was begging my 3 1/2 year old niece for food all afternoon like normal, [8|] so that might be a good sign. She's also been pretty playful and active still, so she can't be feeling too bad. We shall see. Thanks everyone.

You're right; I should have put that differently; sorry. I hope all is well; I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Good luck, I hope she'll be okay!

she'll probably be fine. Dogs used to higher-fat non-kibble diets can eat amazing amounts of fat without problems. Watch out for diarrhea and vomiting-- if vomiting, rush to ER, if diarrhea, well, next time dispose of the fat better.

Totally... My sister said she meant to empty the trash, but forgot. I wouldn't have poured the grease into the trash can anyway, let alone forget to then take the bag out, but whatever. Cherokee's fine so far, so I'm not gonna make a big deal of it.

She had this weird sticky black, well-formed, but very soft (which tells you how sticky it was) stool last night. It was also her normal size, which is pretty small, and that surprised me. She hasn't gone yet today, but I'm wondering if the next one is going to be even weirder.

She also had a strange coughing fit in the middle of the night, but I couldn't find anything about coughing being related to pancreatitis or anything, so maybe that was just because the air is so dry? She's acting totally normal this morning, but I don't know...

Gosh, sometimes I feel like I know nothing about dogs and therefore have no business having one. [&o]

Oh man, if my dog ate that fat I'd be bracing for the shits!  I'd be afraid to leave him alone in the house!

I hope everything, uh, "comes out okay".   Seriously, I do!

Just a little OT here, but I've read quite a few times that it's OK to pour fat/grease down the garbage disposal IF you have the cold water on and IF the garbage disposal is running.  Apparently the cold water solidifies the fat and the disposal grinds it up and sends it on its way.  Never tried it so don't know for sure - but it kind of makes sense.

Be very cautious and put her on a bland diet for a couple days. Watch her like a hawk. I'm not thrilled about the sticky black poop. If this becomes runny or if she stops eating or drinking, rush her to the vet immediately. Don't let the vet talk you out of doing something - she at least need something to ease her tummy.

It should be OK, but I wanted to mention this because you are NOT out of the danger period, though you are really past the point when you can undo it. My guard dogs eat about a quarter cup of pure fresh or rendered fat every day with their kibble breakfast, plus high-fat rmbs at night, but a pound is a somewhat more than that (maybe twice?) plus of course my Maremmas are twice your dog's size.
