Cherokee ate a bowl of fat

Thank you Becca. I'm still watching her closely, and still a bit worried, but honestly, it was mostly fat from ground beef, which I usually leave in her food anyway, but it would have been spread out over several days and mixed with other food. If it was all or mostly bacon fat, I would have made her throw up, and would be a lot more worried, but I'm guessing it was only 2 or 3 ounces bacon fat, which is still a lot, obviously, but I just wanted to make it clear that it wasn't a pound of bacon fat.

I was planning on a bland diet for a few days, but then I wasn't sure if that was silly, so I'm glad you said that. I just boiled her some lean beef and potatoes. Hopefully that's bland enough. I think she's allergic to rice, so rice was out, and I had some beef about to go bad in the fridge. Should I do chicken next time? Does beef and potatoes sound fine?

    God I hope she's okay. [:o]

Oh, Cherokee!  You silly fat-eating dog.  Feel all better soon and don't make your mom worry!

I've done beef and potatoes for a bland diet. My favorite bland diet is egg and potato. It seems to work, for mine....

She will be,Chelsea, as long as you watch her closely. Hang in there and give her some ear scratches for me.

Chelsea, I'm assuming she's still OK - no change in the poops? If so I'm SURE she'll be fine - it's possible she'll have a tummyache in the next day or so but probably not if you manage her intake sensibly. [:D]

I'd go for scrambled eggs, and white potato, no skins. Even the fat in the ground beef would make me squeamish. If you want a little variety (though really it's not needed), get a couple jars of baby food meats and use those, one per meal. Divide the meals into as many as you can.

Good luck and crossing my fingers for you!

This sounds a lot like something my dog would do given the chance, I don't own any trash cans without lids anymore. What is the wort that could happen when a dog does this?

Probably get a pancreatitis attack and die.[&o]

My dogs have got into the BBQ fat before on one occasion, but thankfully they were fine,i attribute this to the fact that they are used to a high fat diet.If they were dogs who got nothing but kibble for every meal things may have turned out different [&:]

Just a little OT here, but I've read quite a few times that it's OK to pour fat/grease down the garbage disposal IF you have the cold water on and IF the garbage disposal is running.  Apparently the cold water solidifies the fat and the disposal grinds it up and sends it on its way.  Never tried it so don't know for sure - but it kind of makes sense.

I don't know if this smart or not but I pour fat/grease down the sink (no garbage disposal) with a bunch of dish soap and hot water.

This makes sense to me, hot water keeps it in liquid form, and soap keeps it from sticking, if you have a septic system you don't need the fat, or the extra soap in your system anyway.

I feed my fat drippins to the dogs. But that's a little per feeding, not a whole pound at once.

If we have too much rendered fat we ball it up with some peanut butter and bird seed and put it out in the suet feeders. But with the guard dogs eating about 1/2 cup day in the winter that rarely happens. [:)]

Chances are she'll be fine, if she's healthy and  has a normal pancreas that produces enough lipase.
One of my dogs ate an entire stick of butter (he counter surfed). I doubted myself and put more butter on the counter, thinking I hadn't gotten it out of the fridge. The clues soon added up though.

He's about 11 pounds, so one stick of butter was a lot (and he also eats a good amount of  fat in his diet).
He vomited once during the night and was fine by morning, stool was a little soft but he was fine the next day.

I thought she hadn't pooped again yet, and I was getting pretty worried. But then I just found some over in a garden on the polar opposite side of the yard she usually goes in, and since it's also dark and slightly sticky (though not nearly as weird as the first poop), I'm assuming it's from yesterday. I've been watching the little bugger, but I left the door open last night in case she had an issue, so maybe that's when she went, or else someone else let her out. In any case, it's about midway between normal and the black sticky stuff, so she seems to be getting better.

The beef wasn't ground beef, it was pretty lean stew meat, that I cut up into little chunks, boiled, and poured the fat off of. I can't imagine it had much fat after that, but I was a little worried about it too. I didn't think of eggs til you guys said it, and I just used the last of my potatoes for this weird eggy mixture I made, that the brat won't eat (I wouldn't eat it either, but I'm not a dog...). So I guess she's not eating til I go to the store. Yippy. Just what I felt like doing today. [:D]

I would think there is more fat in eggs (the yolk is very fatty) than in boiled lean stew beef?

I was sort of wondering about that too? In any case, if she doesn't have pancreatitis, the fat content doesn't matter, right? Even if she's got an upset stomach (which she doesn't seem to)? She seems perfectly fine, so I'm not too worried anymore, but I'm still watching and waiting...
