[:@]  That really bothers me.  I am not trying to start an argument here, but I want to state my opinion.  Bil-Jac Select, Eukanuba, and Nutro are not bad foods.  In fact, some of our members have dogs who do well on some of those foods...mine included.  They surely aren't bad enough to be lumped with foods like Alpo and Gravy Train. Also how can a food like Merrick can make the recommended list when they have had MANY quality control issues?  Yes, mistakes happen, Diamond being another, but Merrick has had many issues and is still having issues.  I know many of the regulars here are knowlegeable enough to research their food more than just looking at a recommended list.  But, there are many who don't know better and will think this list is a great resource.  It is a start, but please research the specific food before buying.  Again, not trying to start an argument, but for those who lurk here, please take this into consideration.

I agree.  Nutro isn't great, but it shouldn't be grouped with "Beneful and Company."  Also, I don't think Nature's Recipe is an awful food.  I'd go so far as to say it's better than Nutro, but that's just an opinion.

And I don't give a rat's @$$ if the WDJ approves the food I feed Roxie.

    Colleen,
Any dog can go life on a dog food no matter what, maybe you should be doing research on your part. Why do you think dogs die young, & get cancer & illness?

I'm sure this page will go on forever, b/c of your ignorant statement, maybe you should do some research on board. Many feed their dogs EP, NB, Canidae, Raw food. Their dogs live up to be 16 yrs old without any plms. A lot of dogs have a lot of allergic plms is b/c of the junk they have in poor quality dog food. Leftovers, fat, by products, BTH and more....

Sorry, but Ms Paws you are a fairly new member and are preaching to people who have been here much longer and already know the information that you are talking down to them about. Also, this like your "picky eaters" thread is an oversimplification of nutrition and I don't think you're qualified to talk down to anyone.

The WDJ doesn't even follow its own rules. Just one example - they say: 3.) We reject foods containg fat or protein not identified by species

And yet [linkhttp://www.nutrisourcedogfood.com/products/adult.html]this[/link] is on their list:

Chicken, chicken meal, brown rice, brewers rice, barley, oatmeal, whole grain ground wheat, poultry fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols (a source of vitamin E) and citric acid), fish meal (a source of fish oil), beet pulp, digest of poultry, flax seeds, dried egg product, brewers yeast, spray dried poultry liver digest, potassium chloride, salt...

    [linkhttp://benchandfield.com/senior_dog_food.php]This[/link] is another recommended brand:

Ground Yellow Corn, Chicken Meal, Rice Flour, Dried Beet Pulp, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, Citric Acid and Rosemary Extract), Brewers Dried Yeast, Fish Meal, Egg Product, Salt, Lamb Digest...

That is VERY wrong of you to call that an ignorant statement.  Some of us on this board who have more than enough education regarding dog food, myself and Colleen included, have tried many premium foods with no luck.  I have tried Timberwolf Organics, Innova EVO, regular Innova, Nature's Variety, California Natural, Solid Gold, Wellness, Eagle Pack Holistic, blah blah etc etc and the only luck I have had is with Bil-Jac.

Ms_paws...this is not my area to moderate but I do want to suggest you amend your tone....because your comments are IMO, unneccesarily harsh, which I see no reason for.

Disagreement was couched respectfully and I find little respect in your reply.

Respect for others here at Dog.com forum is a much valued commodity...and lack thereof can lead to the moderator for this area needing to step in.

This is really just some friendly advice...so hopefully you can accept it as such.

ms_paws, I trust you obtained permission to reprint this information from WDJ? I believe their paper and web presences are subscription only...and their website has a copyright blurb on it. I do not feel comfortable with this list here without knowing you have received permission to reprint it...

Anyone out there familiar with copyright as applies to this type of thing? I know cut n paste has gotten back to the originator/author and dog.com has been contacted in past. I will go ahead and let Jaime know so maybe she can make the call.

I was wondering the same thing about the copyrights but decided not to say anything since I wasn't sure.  I also just want to clear up my knowledge of nutrition.  Most of my knowledge comes from the animal nutrition and animal science classes that I have taken at college.  My close friend/mentor is a nutritionist so I try to learn as much from him as possible.  My point was that a list like that should not be used as a 100% reliable source on dog food.  Yes, it is a starting point, but more research should be done.  I'm sorry if my first post came across wrong, but that is all I wanted to get across in it.  .

If your current brand is not on the list, I would seriously reconsider your current choice.

I've been a subscriber for many years and every time they have the food issues they also state that their list is not all inclusive and that just because a food isn't on their list doesn't mean it's not a good food.

Interesting....Had that been posted in the first place, there would have been no need for my first post!  I hate when things are quoted with very important parts missing!

I'm glad that Gina has already stepped in here.  Let me explain something....it doesn't matter if a member is new or old, that post was bordering on a personal attack on Colleen and if ANY of us, including us old geezers, had made that post, we would have been scolded.  I don't know Colleen well.  Heck, here lately I'm lucky to have ANY time to post or even lurk.  But, I was offended at the tone of that post.  Offended enough that I came to the thread to post, which, for any of you have dialup, you know just getting her is a royal PITA.

There are many foods included in the WDJ list that I personally wouldn't feed.  Some because of QC issues that just don't seem to be addressed, some because I know too much about where they are manufactured and know that the entire city is a cess pool of toxic waste.  This list is not the be all and end all of feeding your dog, just a starting point.

I have posted that the WDJ recommends or doesn't recommend a certain food, but I agree that the inclusion of the whole list is questionable.  This is a subscription, non-ad supported publication, and GIVING the information away on a public forum....not bits and pieces of it but ALL the information, is just not fair to the publication.
