    How Important Is Puppy Food?

6 and a half month old Tasha has been eating IAMS small&toy breed dog food thus far (as far as I know)  should I switch her to puppy food at this point or just keep her on regular dog food?  Does she really need a "small&toy breed"  food?  Has any harm been done by her not having been raised on puppy food?

At that point, you should be feeding adult dog food. The dog doesn't need all the extra nutrients of puppy food anymore.

I never feed puppy food. A quality all life stages food is fine, for pups[:D]

I would look for a better food than I ams....

Well I was given a bag of the IAMS with her but I will probably switch to Maxximum Nutrition after this bag.

    Whats so bad about it?

nothing bad, but if you read, there are food that are supposedly "better" because ingredients aren't fractionated and there is more meat. I suggest trying at least one other food just to see if your dog does do better, if you like Iams, feel free to stick with it. Its a quality product, but many people see improvement when they use different foods.

Iams have been linked to cruel animal testing for years and yearshttp://www.iamscruelty.com One big reason i wouldnt hand this company over a cent of my money!

It is also overpriced for what you get,and when compared to the super premium foods,it,along with it's counterparts, eukanuba, science diet etc really pales in comparison.Just because a product has  slick advertising, nice packaging promising to make you're dog smarter, and they say it's good and healthy, doesnt make it so [;)]

There are countries which have NO choice but to feed their pets foods like iams, science diet, pedigree, purina etc etc etc, because they have no alternatives. We here in the US are extremely fortunate to have the large array of pet foods available at our fingertips,we dont HAVE to feed those foods because we have sooooo many superior ones to choose from!

I also recomend a "healthy" All Life Stages type food for your pup, as long as Tasha does well on it.  The ones I have actual experience with are, Canidae ALS, Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken & Rice, Innova, Natural Balance, Natures Variety.  My pup did well on all these with a slow transition from one to the other.  Note, there are many more healthy brands available that I haven't tried.  Good luck

I agree with [link>http://forum.dog.com/asp/showProfile.asp?memid=19883]GRNROM[/link], I too like the all lifestage formula's.

Many of my friends have brought their pups up on Canidae, Nature's Variety and Natura all life stage formula's.

So, was Chance my brother's dog, she was brought up on Nature's Variety and rotated with Canidae.  They rescued her when she was only 5 weeks old and she has been on these foods since day one.

These attacks on IAMS are from PETA so take them with a grain of salt.  I personally have not taken them seriously after reading arguments from both sides.

I've heard from veterinarians who visited the Iams and purina plants, and they have had nothing but good things to say about the visits. Their research facitilites included...

Maxximum Nutrition is really not all that different than Iams, just FWIW.

There are more than one or two research facilities, and i cant see iams letting them into the ones that the animal testing is conducted in.If all of these reports/rumours are false then why on earth hasnt iams sued anyone over spreading false accusations??They sure have the money and resources to do so,could it be they dont want their dirty laundry aired in open court,or could there be worse things uncovered when people start digging a little further? And why has iams and not other companies been targeted so vehemently?

Bottom line for me is this company has been shrouded with bad publicity for years, and really unsavoury stuff and of the worst kind IMHO,so i'm not willing to risk if the reports are true or not.Animal testing aside,it's still not a decent food.

Not even decent??? You guys are harsh...
