T.O. Salmon Oil...and Vit. E

    • Gold Top Dog
Thanks for the reply.  No offense taken.[;)]  I'm very open minded at this point, and I'm really still just trying to learn all I can, so I appreciate any and all opinions.

I originally bought the Salmon Oil for my bigger dog...but then I started thinking maybe I'd give it to my Chihuahua as well, thinking that it might be good for his back leg (he has a luxating patella).  I might be way off base here though...I'm planning to do a lot more research before I actually start anything, if I do.  But I just thought as long as I was on the topic, I'd ask for others opinions on the right amount to use in case I do choose to use the supplements.

I am feeding him high quality foods, so I may just not worry about either one for him.  Thanks for the opinion though!  And I do agree with you that supplements can be overdone and aren't always necessary, so I'm always reluctant to use new things unless I've done my research first and come to the conclusion that it is the right decision.  I'm honestly not very big on supplementing, for dogs or humans.  I would rather get the needed nutrients from good food if possible.

GypsyNbeau, what brand food are you currently feeding your guys?Out of curiosity, how much does you're lil guy eat per day?

I'm feeding Timberwolf Organics kibble and adding some canned food (diff. brands such as NV, TO, and Evangers).  And I also recently started feeding the NV medallions a couple times a week.

He eats between 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day.  It varies some, some days he eats more, some days less.

I give Zhi Derm Caps. They are balanced for her weight and I don't have to worry about overdosing her. It's frightfully expensive but it takes the guesswork out of it.

I've given her a full sized adult antioxidant formula (no vitamin A, no Se) with no ill effects. Toxicity for dogs for most supplements is way, way up there so I'm not worried about hitting it with something as relatively benign as Vitamin E. I was giving her that high a dose because she had the nickle-sized hole flayed from her rear end and I wanted to promote quick healing and boost her immune system. It apparently worked because it healed completely in two weeks and it never even swelled or bothered her.

That doesn't mean throw common sense to the wind - that's why I use Derm Caps and a complete vitamin supplement powder with dosage by weight.

My 10 lb. dachsie eats 1/2 cup a day of Innova dry or Canidae dry.    My reason for wanting to supplement the fish oil is that some people have had good results in regrowing the hair from dachsie pattern baldness (alopecia) which Zoe has a bit of.  Her hair is soft as can be and shiny from her foods, but the oil may help with the hairloss.

Oooh, let me know if that helps... I have a friend on another forum who asked me if I knew of anything that helped Dachsund pattern baldness, and I couldn't find anything helpful at all...

Thanks brookcove, I'll look into the Derm Caps.  That might be a good option.  If you don't mind my asking, how much does Zhi weigh?  Just for curiosities sake...[:)]

Ten pounds, give or take a few ounces. The Derm Caps I use is this one:

http://tinyurl.com/txosj (sorry, I checked to see whether dog.com had them and no dice).

It includes fish oil, plus a couple other oils, plus Vitamin E. Ben is on the large breed version and it keeps his skin and coat very nice where just fish oil alone doesn't seem to quite do the trick (he's got really lousy skin from the allergies and thyroid problems). Zhi doesn't really have any problems but the Derm Caps 10 is very convenient, especially for ensuring she gets the right level of E.

Hmm...the link's not working.  But I can just do a search for them.  Thanks for the info!

I must have cut and pasted the url wrong. http://tinyurl.com/yes48d If that doesn't work, go to KV Vet (kvvet.com) and put "derm caps" in the search function.

    Whoa.
And these honestly work on your dogs, Becca?

Because 75 I.U.s per capsule seems good to me!

I'd just have to figure out...there's derm caps, regular derm caps, and extra strength derm caps?

That's the 10 pound size, lol. I give Ben the ES with the gold label (but the E is the same, hmm, interesting). I also supplement him with additional E, as working BCs are very sensitive to E deficiencies. About one in four has FMAR, which is scarring of the retina caused by oxidation.

Thanks for posting the link; the bottle of 250 ES is $10 less than Foster and Smith, who sold it a lot cheaper than PetsMart. I always thought DermCaps made a great product.

Thanks again. [:D]  This stuff is looking better and better to me...and the price is better than some of the other sites I was looking at.

But now I should probably try to come up with $42 more worth of stuff to order all at once, to avoid that minimum order charge...hmm.
    • Gold Top Dog
Yup, they get you there - but it's free shipping if you can figure out what else to buy. I have livestock too so it's easy for me to come up with stuff if I time it right (I just placed a $52 order by including my worming meds, syringes, etc, for pre-lambing season).

Sorry dog.com, but Derm Caps is a great product, hint, hint! [;)]
