Aaaaugh DIARREAH!!!! HELP?!

    Aaaaugh DIARREAH!!!! HELP?!

We've been home four days from a two week trip and Piper (our cocker) has developed diarreah, I believe entirely due to my mixing cooked unseasoned hamburger meat into his kibble. I've mixed things into his kibble before to entice him to eat it - please don't trounce me on this, his very trustworthy (in my opinion) vet suggested it. He wasn't having any problems other than I was worried because he wasn't eating (he's a little stressed from all the change he had to endure during the trip). We had a little situation today where I came home to find him covered in poo in his crate - I almost cried. Poor little guy stuck in there in all that stench, poor little me having to figure out what to do with a poo encrusted dog and a poo encrusted crate and a house that smelled like rotten broccoli.
I know it was stupid of me to try him out on a meat I didn't know if his stomach could handle. I thought it was a small enough amount...apparently not. He's been going potty all day and there isn't anything left to go but liquid. I'm trying to keep him hydrated and I'm a little worried about feeding him again (he eats early in the morning and a few hours before bed) Is there any holistic way I can calm his tummy down and avoid any further accidents? Would it be alright if I gave him a gingersnap and could it help?

I know that gingersnaps can sometimes be used to combat carsickness before it happens, but I don't know how they'd affect an uspet tummy with diarrhea. Do you have, or can you get, some plain canned pumpkin? Give a tablespoon or so and fast him for the rest of the night. Then start with very small meals of boiled chicken and rice a few times tomorrow.

Here's a tummy soothing recipe I just ran across, haven't ever tried it though

    TUMMY SOOTHER

    Boil together I white potato
    1 red potato
    1 turnip
    1 leek
    1 sweet potato
Cook the heck out of this mix, use broth (chicken, beef, veggie, whatever) instead of milk to make the mash. It is very well
tolerated by most and although it provides nutrients it allows the gut time to rest and repair!

I second the pumpkin!  Its my doggy drug of choice.  Just make sure its the plain kind and not the pie filling that has all the spices added already.  My dogs love it.

Your probably right, stress and the meat added to the kibble did the trick.  Good suggestions given but I think I would withhold food until tomorrow and then give him a bland diet rice and boiled chicken.

Thanks so much for the speedy replies and help. I was getting a bit freaked out with all the potty breaks - he seems to be bloated and probably has an upset stomach. I'll give him a bit of pumpkin tomorrow and cook his rice and chicken. The dogbreedinfo link was a welcome relief!

Are you sure it was the hamburger??  Because, besides chicken and rice I've heard of people using hamburger and rice if they need a bland diet.  So, I'm just wondering why the hamburger would of done this??

We have given our dogs Pepto Bismol more than once!   If the pumpkin does'nt help try it.   I know it helps firm up the stool, but I have never had it help us for actual diarreah!

I know a kennel that gives one (human) immodium to dogs over 30 lbs and half of an immodium to smaller dogs if they have "explosive" diarrhea...seems to work well although I wouldn't call it "hollistic." [:)]

Was the hamburger fried? (as in just stuck in a pan to cook) or was it boiled. I know that lots of people give boiled chicken and rice for their dogs. Maybe if it was cooked the other way, the grease was too much for him.

If it were my dog- I would fast him for 24 hours- absolutely nothing worked on Daisy when she has diarrhea- pumpkin helps when there is something to form (sorry for the gross out analogy!). If I gave Daisy *anything* when she had blowout diarrhea, it would go right through her. If he's drinking okay, that's good, if not then you can try some unflavored pedialite  (Even though it's unflavored, Daisy is obsessed with that stuff!) to keep him hydrated. Then if he's doing good, maybe try the chicken and rice for a couple days.

I agree with willowchow. It seems like a lot of diarrea because of a little hamburger, and you also said he seems to be bloated. Perhaps it's the stress plus the hamburger, but you may want to call your vet to be safe.

The other thing to consider is the weather change and possibility of worms as well as where you were and also picking up parvo.

I agree with fasting your dog and only offering water for 24 hours, get a stool sample to your vet and watch for blood in stool

Well, I think perhaps it wasn't necessarily the hamburger, but the way I cooked it. I checked up on what other people have done when cooking hamburger, and they boil it and remove the grease. I cooked it in the skillet and drained the grease. He is a six month old puppy, after all. Also, we have well water. While we were away, I had bottled Ice Mountain water that I didn't like the taste of that I kept giving to him throughout the two weeks. He did have one bout of diarrhea while we were gone. Perhaps he adjusted to that water and then when we came back home our water upset his stomach?
I'm sure its a combination of things - another possibility of which is that we went from Indiana to Denver, CO. He spent much of his time in the car with us racing around mountains sight seeing inbetween my husbands calls and meetings - he's possibly suffering from some kind of altitude issues as well. He was quite whiney - when my ears were popping, I think his were too!
He's not over the diarrhea today, but his elimination patterns are better. It seems to be "hardening up" so to speak. I haven't had a chance yet to get some pumpkin in him, and if things don't look better tomorrow, I'll call the vet. There isn't any blood in his stool or any serious change in odor or color of his feces.
I feel so guilty for perhaps being the cause of all this! Thinking back through, I do remember letting him have a tea spoon of raw honey for a treat earlier yesterday before I gave him the hamburger. Perhaps there was bacteria in it that upset his tummy...

I cook ground beef, turkey or pork  in a skillet and drain the grease all the time. Everytime. We put it on kibble for both Bubblegum and Oliver.
When I cook it and drain it, I then put it in a container for a few days, for Oliver, it goes into individual small yogurt containers and I freeze it for when I see him.  There is very little grease at the bottom of my containers though, so I can't see it being the grease from it if your draining.

100% PURE pumpkin is good for diarrhea and constipation.  I agree, anyone or a combination of all  those things you mentioned could have caused his problem.  I usually boil the hamburger.  Lets hope he gets back to his old self soon if not maybe his vet can help.  Good luck!

Everyone has given you good suggestions. What i do if my dogs ate too much,or they have a tum upset,is give them homeopathic nux vomica 30x,this fixes them up within hours. It is very safe to give and can be found at most health shops or natural remedy places.I would recommend this above every thing else as it is so fast acting.Ofcourse still give the pumpkin, chicken and rice etc but alongside the remedy.
